She began her showbiz singing career in 1984 when she joined and won the biggest and the most prestigious singing contest on TV in the Philippines, where she was undefeated for 8 weeks and ultimately won the grand finals. Although she became popular since then to have a one of kind belting range, her career was off to a slow start. At that time, she was arguably the only local singer in the Philippine music industry who can give justice to singing Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion songs live. But it was after she won the grand prize in the Asia-Pacific Singing Contest, held in Hong Kong, in 1989 when her career blossomed. That was when she was given the title "Asia's Songbird". She was unstoppable since then, doing recordings, concerts, movies, tv soaps, tv shows, etc. She became a multi-media success and icon. To date, she holds the title as the bestselling recording artist of all time in the Philippines (male or female). For decades she maintained a stature which was second to no one. It was only after she got married and had a child that her career started slowing down. And of course age did catch up to her. At almost 50, she's still a force to be reckoned with. All the young divas of today have been inspired and influenced by Regine, and could only hope that they can achieve even just a tip of what she has accomplished. Oh my! Held my breath for like a minute there, have not seen this but she's phenomenal. Her training was pretty hardcore, she was trained by her father (most Filipino singers are self-taught or trained by their own parents) she would sing in the sea when she was a child. Yes, I suppose she deserves that moniker, Filipino singers look up to her and set the bar so high, that's probably why there's quite a lot of belters and to impress their elders and usually is the case in singing competitions. it's not hereditary neither on the genes... its the culture. 1. 95% of filipino households have a kareoke machine. we love singing, even if there is no special occassion. 2. if you have this talent, you got the support of the family, unlike in any other countries where they would like you to focus on your studies. Those were just the significant things i find about our culture, not by being biased ;-)
