Of all the changes, Maruyama being changed from purple to brown is the funniest to me. "How is anyone supposed to know he's a bear if he's purple?" "Trouble Bruin" is an absolutely top notch bear pun, though.

@@myaltaccount4438 It's not the same at all. The American version is a robot, the US version is a Japanese-dressed princess (that obviously gets dialogue when the US version's doesn't).
They could've at least tried with the dialogue... Some parts of the story make no sense... Also, Maruyama not talking is just depressing to see. And the boss where the geisha was changed into a generic robot... I get why, but it still sucks... The original had her name change from Yayoi to Izayoi, while the robot changed its name from gatekeeper to nasty gatekeeper. Japanese name is creative and it also rhymes, the English version is just boring and generic. Also, RiverFace, or Twin Freaks is a lot harder in the Japanese version. This sucks because he is so easy to beat in the English version; you can beat it before it has a valid chance to crush you. That boss, although hard, is one of my favorites, so I'm disappointed with the direction they took. In conclusion, I was pretty surprised on what they took out. People should play the translated patch instead of the English release...
車食べたい Royally agree would certainly look for the translated patch of the game and do a walkthrough eventually. Plus for fun, my partner once did a little voiceover snippet of maruyama in same tone as Happy cat clock voiced by Mako. Whom also voiced the original Aku from Samurai Jack.
The reason behind it is that game rentals were outlawed in Japan, but were commonplace in the US. This meant that making games unbearably hard held no real benefit in the Japanese market, since people bought games upfront. In the US, it would hurt business if people beat a game within a single rental, so they increased the difficulty so games would be rented out multiple times.
The most entertaining game I've ever played... After over 20 years I defeated the robot at the beginning of the game and I could save those being kidnapped... So fulfilling.
it's so weird that the US version didn't have any dialogue before the boss fights. (thank god there's an actual patch to translate the Japanese dialogue to English)
I probably wouldn't mind that much if there wasn't dialogue since there's not much to the story other than "evil guys are evil, kill them" BUT Maruyama's dialogue alone makes the JP version so much more charming. It's so fun seeing him constantly talk about how he's gonna replace Headdy as the star and how persistent he is at it (even admitting he cried after he fell down in the tower level), and unfortunately we don't get that with the US' "Trouble Bruin" who doesn't talk and is just constantly angry the whole time. He's also brown, which I think was to make him look more like a bear than a cat. ...didn't work
It's likely just regional changes to tell different versions apart while testing them prior to release, as they had to do several versions in a short amount of time.

i love this game! i just got it recently and its become one of my favorite games on the genesis. that being said its a little unfair how much easier the japanese version is. i have the american version and it is brutal! im still practicing but i can only make it about 3/4 thru the game before game over! im determined tho! i will beat it!
Yea it is brutal, I agree. I have the game on Genesis too, but I'm happily playing it on Switch. I'm using save states. It's crazy hard even with saves. How the keck did kids beat this in one sitting? Anyway, how are you doing with the game so far?
Japanese one is easier, plays faster, has better names for most bosses, and has a leprechaun. American one is more challenging but is very poorly translated.
Now fighting a Doll Robot is just creepy for the JPN version, because it reminds me of the 80's horror film Child's Play. So fighting a Toy Robot on the USA Version is my pick.
The only thing they did for the American version that was justified was to make the big loli boss a Statue of Liberty/castle thing, that was hilarious. It still sucks that we didn’t get to read the dialogue from these characters though!
I like the Japanese version better (no offense America) the Japan one actually has character dialogue and better coloring for the bosses, I also love the additional ‘arch-nemesis’ theme the purple cat has. America’s color schemes look a little weird, sometimes the level names are inappropriate like “toys from the hood” or whatever it was
Well, yes the US version is fine and I prefer the pallet from that game, the JP version is really better as it has speech before every boss, ( I know it's Japanese, but you can apply a translation patch pretty easy) as there isn't any in the Japanese version and the difficulty is change. It's mostly a little bit lower, but twin freaks has double health.
Yeah but in the JP version you can deal Twin Freaks damage by hitting him in any part of the ear, whereas in the US version he has half the health but you need to hit him speciafically on the center of ear. Maybe you already knew that idk.

Marc Souza quanto ao ursinho, ele se enquadra no mesmo caso do personagem Kirby da Nintendo, sendo que os americanos não gostam de personagens fofinhos como os japoneses costumam gostar, perceba que além da cor, muda tb a expressão do ursinho, na versão japonesa ele tem uma expressão boba,enquanto que a versão americana ele tem uma expressão raivosa. (o mesmo acontece nas capas japonesa e americana dos jogos do personagem Kirby da Nintendo)
Is there a reason why you think the Japanese version is so much better? So far from what I'm seeing, both versions look and play just fine. One just has robotics, while the other has dolls. If it's because of the dialogue taken out, or the game being harder in the US, then I get that.

As awesomely weird as this game is (Treasure in their prime), I think it would've benefited from a catchier musical score. It seems a bit lacking with respect to the high-bar of quality set by the rest of the game.
