Hi Murray, things are much worse now. I imported some Citroens back in the 80s when I just drove them to Dover, argued with the Customs guys to get the value down, cover note from the AA office then up to the Manchester office in the morning. The queue to see someone took longer than registering it! They only ever asked to se one vehicle, a Vespa and guy "inspecting" it had to be shown where all the numbers were. Happy days. If you have the NOVA number I would enter USA as the country and then mention that you bought from a third party in the UK in your covering letter. It should make no difference to them ultimately.

@@oldnutsgarage thanks. I've seen other videos saying they left it blank and it was ok. Do you need a v112 to declare the mot exemption? I've seen some videos stating you do.

As I said ultimately it is probably not important to them, as for MOT exemption it also should be picked up automatically, but anything you do that makes or appears to make their life easier does no harm so include v112 by all means, it is a very short form.

Hi Rob, the honest answer is that I am not sure. You can get a NOVA number just for a frame, but to register it the rest of a bike would have to be built around it, but that then falls under the reconstructed classic regulations whereby the frame has to be new for age related status, if a second hand one is used then it will get a Q plate which I assume you would want to avoid. If your V5 for the current Dream does not have an engine number on it ( not uncommon ) then I suppose you could swap all the bits over to the German frame, then declare the whole bike as an import and register it from there. I am not sure of the legality of that process as the DVLA consider the frame to be " the bike", however, if the current engine number has ever been recorded in the UK then that will not work. I think this one will be bit tricky!

@@oldnutsgarage My, we do make things complicated don’t we! I suppose, hypothetically speaking, I could have imported the bike from Germany, and subsequently replaced the engine with a UK one 🤔

Yep, in theory that would solve the problem I think but have not tried it so who knows for sure?

I have no experience of registering new vehicles, I can only suggest looking at the DVLA website and see if you have all the necessary documents, import papers, certificate of conformity, etc etc. Good luck!

The first thing is to get a NOVA number because nothing can be registered without one Ring the HMRC helpline, I had a bike with no papers and they sorted it out for me over the phone. Then you need someone to provide a dating letter. I do not know Kikker but try the manufacturer first. once you sort those out you can start filling forms. Good luck!

The simple answer is that I do not know, but the NOVA system seems to be all encompassing, so anything coming in has to be declared and then they decide how much if any monies are due. I also suspect that the DVLA won't touch registering an import without a NOVA and I cannot find anything to suggest the Isle of Man would be exempt.. Give the customs people a ring, they were very helpful when I had a problem with a scooter. Sorry I cannot be any more help.

@@oldnutsgarage hi and thank you for the reply. I went to do a Nova and got so far. When they asked the details of who I got it from. Put the persons address and went to select the country and no mention on Isle of Man. Arghhhhhh what to do.

If it is not on the list then IOM might be exempt? Also I was thinking about this last night and as the vehicle was initially UK registered then technically a "first " registration fee should not be applicable either. You definitely have to ring them to sort this one out I think.

@@oldnutsgarage I got the V5C today, it only took 26 days, a few days ago a bloke from the DVLA rang me to ask why I didn't have an Italian registration document and I told him that I didn't get one as the bike had been off the road in Italy for a long time and I bought the bike at an autojumble, he said OK but I needed to confirm this by replying to an email which he sent right away and said that he'd process it once I did that.

Great, glad it all went well. Did you send a dating letter? I don't know why he would ask about a foreign logbook if you had a dating letter. It may have just been an additional check, just like the y select some for a physical check of the frame numbers. I got a NOVA number on an autojumble buy by ringing the Customs people and explaining the situation. In the main they are pretty good, as I said in the video, if you make things as easy as possible for them they are more likely to sort it out quickly.

@@oldnutsgarage Yes, I sent a dating letter and some photos and he said he'd send them back, but all I got was the V5C, I'm not bothered as long as I've got that. The funny thing is that I've been checking my online banking every day to see if the cheque has been processed but up to now it hasn't.

The pics and stuff has always been sent back to me separately as the V5 is just churned out by a computer, so they will probably show up soon. The money will be taken I am sure of that. It does sound like the guy was just making a random check as there was no Italian logbook, either way you are registered, so it is all good ( and not that slow either )

@@oldnutsgarage my bike is written off as a cat b but ive rebuilt it using a frame purchased from germany and using all the parts from my original bike i dont have a nova certificate and im not sure how to proceed with getting it roadworthy again

Hi Jamie, there are a lot of conflicting issues with your situation, this is my take on them ( my personal opinion only ). Ring HM Customs and Excise and explain that you imported a frame and want a NOVA number. In theory they can fine you for any delay but as an individual ( not a business ) just explain that you did not know and hope for the best. I had to do this once with a scooter with no import paperwork and the lady I spoke to was very helpful. Once you are certain of getting/ have got a NOVA number, then get a dating letter from the manufacturer if they still exist or owners club if not. Depending on the club they may want to see pictures of the completed bike before issuing a dating certificate. The dating letter also relates to the frame and that really should be all the DVLA are interested in, many vehicles have an unrecorded engine number on the V5. The next bit is the tricky one.... I personally would then try to register the complete bike as an import based on the frame. They will not let you register it on your old plate as a CAT B cannot go back on the road. Because of the mix and match of bits you are possibly into reconstituted classic territory or even at risk of getting the dreaded Q plate. Sorry I cannot be more helpful but it really is a potentially tricky one. I would start by speaking to the NOVA people.

@@oldnutsgarage could u help me out I’m trying to do the nova for my pitbike as it’s came from England brand new and it doesn’t let me select England only Ireland then I click Ireland it asks me for a Ireland driving license when my driving license is uk one

You cannot select England because if it originates here then it is not an import. If you bought it here unregistered then that is a different issue, you will have to specify original country of origin, almost certainly China. Some of these bike do not conform to various bits of UK legislation. The best thing is to ignore the computerised process and ring the NOVA helpline and explain your circumstances.

hi, if you are writing a cheque you only need to make it payable to dvla you do not need any other details, just fill in the amount and send it off.

Hello sir I got another question . I found lovely bike in Poland honda goldwing 1500 , the owner wants about 8000 £ . Do you know how it looks with all taxes bringing bike into UK now. I read its 8% duty and 20% vat. But not sure what is the different buing from private, and from trader. Maybe you could do one video about it because you do it very nice like teacher in good school :) regards

Sorry for the delay in replying I have been travelling. The duty and VAT have to be paid before a NOVA is issued, and I think it must be declared as imported within one week of arrival or there are fines. The percentage is based on declared value with evidence, so a dealer will give you an invoice. A private seller would write you a receipt and sometimes mistakes are made and people write down the wrong number :) or so I have been told. Otherwise the registration process should be the same although you will need the certificate of conformity as it is a modern bike. Things are harder with the more modern stuff as they came with more legal paperwork in the beginning.
