Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. Just bought a regulator off eBay and needs cleaned badly. I usually work on older wooden works or Atkins triple deckers though have never pulled one apart to clean (Which I know should be done) I usually dip and clean them with brushes. but watching here gives me encouragement and know-how to pull my regulator apart and clean it peoperly. Thank you Hello from the Brushy mountains of NC.

Mr. Perry, I hope you are well. I just purchased a New Haven Time Only Calander wall clock Drop Octagon. I completely disassembled the movement , cleaned it ,got rid of all the rust. I put it back together, oiled it and it runs perfectly.I also did the calander train.. it was binding and not advancing properly but through the cleaning and testing phase.. I have it working 100%. Please take a look at the 2 new videos I have posted.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Steve

I have looked everywhere on how to change leather on a hammer head. Are all heads the same?? My ingraham hammer doesn't come off. A how to would be cool to see
@dperry428
@dperry428 3 года назад
No, there is a great variation in how the leather is attached. Some have a threaded hole and a piece of leather is twisted in against the threads. Others are glued in and you just have to dig or drill them out. Then, use a leather punch or sharpened metal tube to cut out a cylinder of leather and glue it in.

Monday, I was waiting for the call to tell me the time of surgery and when to be at the hospital yesterday. They called and said the anesthesiologist would not approve the surgery because he saw something wrong with my EKG, which I had done last Thursday and the doctor who did the test said my EKG was normal. Said he wouldn't approve surgery until I had a complete cardiac workup. Needless to say, I was very, very upset, between extreme anger and crying. I've been waiting more than 3 months for this. I wanted to know why it wasn't looked at between Thursday and Monday, or at least early on Monday. I had been in quarantine since my Covid test on Saturday morning. With no answer, I told them our relationship was done and I'd seek other medical care. The surgeon called me an hour later to tell me what our next steps were and, when he couldn't or wouldn't tell me why someone had not looked at the EKG long before 4:15 PM on Monday, I told him to (expletive deleted). I want no more to do with any of them. I've ordered a hip brace and will just take whatever meds I need to relieve pain.

Hello sir, I have an old cuckoo clock that I want to clean. What would be the best solution to clean the chains and movement with if I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner?
@dperry428
@dperry428 3 года назад
Do as I did for 45 years and clean everything manually. A solution of Dawn dish soap, Murphy's oil soap, a small amount of household ammonia and water. Don't make the solution so strong that it irritates your hands. Some people would also add acetone, but it's got its dangers. I don't use it. Mix it like you were going to wash greasy dishes. Scrub each part with a toothbrush and peg out each pivot hole with a toothpick and solution. Rinse the parts in hot water, dry with a towel and then a hair dryer.

@@dperry428 Great! Thank you so much! Will that work for cleaning up the rusty/grimy chains? This is my first cuckoo clock repair project and I'm loving it already. Your videos have been amazing help. I might have a few other questions as things progress.
@dperry428
@dperry428 3 года назад
It will clean most of the grime from the chains. How much rust is removed depends on the degree of rust. If they're too rusted, you might consider just buying new chains. You have to measure the number of links per foot and the diameter of the wire on a link. timesavers.com/search.html?q=cuckoo+chain&go=Search Ask as many questions as you like; I'll try to answer as best I can.

@@dperry428 Thanks so much for the advice. That cleaning solution worked perfectly! I also saw that you used Linseed oil before on the box, do you think that would be a good idea to use on my cuckoo clock to rejuvenate the wood?
@dperry428

Yes, it does. Used boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits mixed 50/50. Let it sit a few minutes to soak into the wood, then wipe off with dry, lintless rags. Let dry overnight.

@@michaelmccune1241 First, you must disassemble the movement to clean it. Then, do as I did for more than 40 years -- scrub the parts with a toothbrush and liquid dish soap in water. Then, rinse thoroughly in clear water, remove majority of water with a dry rag and dry thoroughly with a hair dryer. If the parts, especially rusty steel parts, need more aggressive cleaning, use 0000 steel wool.

Hi Mr Perry, What is the latest for your hip replacement? Thought you might like a video James Martin did for me. It is a cuckoo/quail movement. Go to James Martin cuckoo #28. Bob
@dperry428
@dperry428 3 года назад
I saw an orthopedic surgeon in DeKalb; he looked at my x-ray and said he didn't want to attempt the surgery and that I needed to see a specialist in Chicago. Seems my thigh bone narrows to an extreme that a normal surgery would be difficult because the prosthetic would not fit properly. So, I saw a surgeon at Northwestern University Hospital who teaches doctors how to replace hips. He said he would have to ream out the bone to make the new hip fit and I'm now scheduled for surgery on May 21. It's a good thing it's not too much longer. I'm now almost unable to walk at all. The x-ray shows the end of the bone almost obliterated. He said the right one needs replaced, too, though it's not quite as bad as the left. I saw the video of your cuckoo-quail clock. I wanted to comment, but I thought better. He did a nice job of replacing the lift lever. I wanted to shout out that he needed to carefully look at the brass lever that runs on the cam. It looked terribly worn and, sure enough, at the end, the cuckoo door didn't open as it should. The lever needed an extension added to the point to make it ride higher and, thus, push the cuckoo further, which would have then opened the door completely. He seemed thorough otherwise. I wondered, though, if he had found any worn pivot holes. From the video, it seems only a cleaning was necessary other than the lift lever.

@@dperry428 I am really glad for you to finally get the hip replaced on May 21. I will watch for your progress. I am sure the surgery will go well. Thanks for your comments about the video. I asked James to do a basic teardown and reassembly. I did not expect to see the broken lift arm. I am glad he fixed it. I mainly wanted to see his procedure on assembling the movement. I love his use of putty to hold various parts together. I have a hard time keeping wheels , warning pins , cams etc from moving when putting the top plate on. I am looking for putty, maybe Rodico to try. I am specializing in Quail and three weight cuckoos and I'm sure you know they can be difficult to assemble. Good luck and be safe. I hope you can do another clock video be fore your surgery Bob

@@dperry428 hello. Not sure if this is a silly question. But when testing a cuckoo on the time gears do you need to have the hand nuts on? A movement I have seems to be all intact, pendulum swings but the cuckoo side won’t engage. The weight on the time side drops and all the gears are touching. It’s a one day regula. Thanks. Also when I turn it manually the hour and half hour tabs that lift the gathering pallet engage like normal.
@dperry428
@dperry428 3 года назад
On a Regula, there should be no need for the hand nuts to be on, but, why don't you just try putting them on and see if there is a difference? All I can tell you is to hang the movement outside of the case on a test stand, manually move to the hour and half-hour, watch the action of the levers carefully. Do the cams on the hour tube lift the lever. Does that lever lift the lever it lifts move enough to release the warning pin? Is the warning pin bent such that it doesn't release? Is the rack released as the time approaches the hour? You just have to know how the strike works and watch each part until you find what is binding it. There could be a bent lever that isn't doing its job. I can't help any more than that.

@@dperry428 thanks. I’ll go through each part and examine it. Probably be really obvious when I find it. Take care
