Reimagining Plastic: Turning Waste into Products | earthrise

The explosion of plastic waste across the globe is threatening the very survival of life on the planet.
Every year, up to 12 million metric tonnes of plastic enter our oceans, and plastic waste in the environment is set to triple in the next decade - poisoning marine life, littering landscapes and clogging waterways.
"The scale of the plastic problem is huge ... If you look at our current economy it's predominantly linear. We take a material out of the ground, we make something out of it and then the majority of that material gets thrown away," says Dame Ellen MacArthur, the founder of Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
"We need to shift that economy to be one that uses materials rather than uses them up ... To build a circular economy for plastic ... we need to redesign the way we think about plastics, the way we design plastics, and the way we use plastics. So we need to eliminate the plastic that we don't need. We need to innovate for different forms of plastic, which are 100 percent recyclable, and we need to look at how we circulate plastics - designing a system whereby that material is collected, has value and feeds back into the system ... There is a massive opportunity to redesign our global economy."
Awareness is on the rise and experts report that surveys reveal a sense of true determination throughout the world to solve the plastic issue.
earthrise went to Cameroon and the UK to look at solutions to ridding the world of our most pressing waste.
Cameroon's Bottle Boats
Ismael Essoume is a young businessman in Cameroon, who is cleaning up the country from plastic waste by picking up bottles that litter the natural environment and turning them into eco-boats.
He says it can help the environment as well as local fishermen.
"The pollution affected the river and now you cannot catch fish because the fishing area is full of plastic," he says.
"So I thought to help not only clean the rivers but also to provide boats because it's not easy in the villages for someone to buy a simple boat, so now we build cheaper eco-boats that could be useful."
To date, he has built 37 boats which have removed over 24,000 bottles from Douala's rivers.
Essoume has also created Cameroon's first recycling scheme by establishing eco-bins - made from 255 bottles - where locals can discard their plastic bottles.
His initiative is not only raising awareness, it is changing the way Cameroonians approach waste.
"We want our city to be the example in Africa," he says. "We aim to supply eco-bins in the areas of Douala, all the corners in front of all the shops, the supermarket, the school, so it will be easy to come and pick up the waste and recycle it. That is the vision."
All Chewed Up
In England, we look at one of the world's stickiest problems - chewing gum.
The UK has a particularly bad problem with this plastic pollutant. But now a new invention could spell the end of the scourge.
Enviro-entrepreneur Anna Bullus has put in place a network of pink gum bins, which are themselves made of recycled gum.
As consumers discard their gum, the bins and their contents are sent off to be processed and recycled into a range of stylish products from shoes to coffee cups.
"All the solutions out there at the moment all address gum litter once it's already been dropped. There is nothing out there that's actually addressing it from the front end," she says.
"So I saw a gap in the market for a product like this and also a way of tackling behavioural change when it comes to gum litter and giving people a positive way to dispose of their chewing gum."
The invention is keeping streets gum free and paving the way for a new type of recycling.

@@kertbert1 And that is the voice of ABSOLUTE COMFORT expressing itself in your words. Your quest for less plastic is not this man's immediate BASIC need nor is it the basic need of his COMMUNITY! You call his used of plastic GARBAGE BOATS, but ignore the use of the same plastic for 'CUPS' in the same video in your community. It is this mindset from a position of comfort, your comfort not his that is at the root of the human lack of understanding of one another. This man did not pollute the environment with plastic, your comfort and continued quest for comfort did, he is just seeing the opportunity to take your comfort-based pollution and re-purposing it for his community's BASIC needs. Unlike you, he sees a DUAL purpose, take your plastic polluting his community, create a utility (BOATS} or 'garbage boats' as you prefer to call them from your position of comfort and by doing so, give others around him a means to earn a living while at the same time reducing the need for trees to be cut down for 'non garbage boats' production in his community. You might not see the value of what he is doing in his community and you are right not to see it, after all you do not see his own realities but expect him to see yours. I am here to bridge that reality gap for you. This man does not need a lecture from you on saving the PLANET. The problem, he is trying to fix in his own way is not a problem he nor his community created. It is a problem created by your comfort-based community. He is trying to keep his community above water and you should see his reality and not impose yours on him. This man is cleaning up his COMMUNITY, taking your garbage and transforming them into his community's basic needs and wants. He does not have to also save your communities and the oceans around your communities. Please, give him CREDIT for trying to clean up YOUR MESS, the only way he can today. I am just saying...

So, that is somehow just an east coast issue? No, it is all over the world. I live on the Chesapeake Bay and I walk our shores constantly. I don't find NEARLY as much plastic as I used to because we have recycling centers and free curbside pick-up. It is turned into a resource for the municipality earning them money by selling the waste rather than costing them money by trying to dispose of the waste. No, the problem in the world is too many people think that they can't do anything about waste issues. I know people who "don't believe in recycling" or scoff that recycling materials don't actually get recycled. Well, in part that is true, what is unidentifiable or a class of plastic that there is no demand for is sent to landfills, but the rest comes out as everything from decking lumber and furniture to drink/product bottles and even rope. Until people feel responsible for their own waste, this will continue to be a problem.

Fortunately the Koch brothers have provided $800,000,000 to increase the use of plastics. It's working very well, and 14% of oil and gas now goes to plastics. But since recycling is accounting for less than ten percent of production, the number should climb.

While we--humans--lack in common sense we more than make up for it with ingenuity. This is one of the factors that keep my hope alive for a bright future no matter how in trouble we are (environment, human rights, etc).

I know that making the boats out of the bottles is helping the local fishermen and he's getting the bottles out of the rivers, but isn't that just delaying the overall problem? How long can one of those boats last? The fishermen who receive and use the boats will need to dispose of the bottles correctly otherwise the bottles will still end up being litter and end up in the ocean.

It is sad that we aren’t doing enough to find solutions to recycle or better yet find ways to not use plastics we know some countries are using plastic as paving tile ,roofing tiles in black top for roads we have some very intelligent in the world we just need to listen to each other for solutions

I give the guy props for being innovative and trying to help the environment and community, but how long will the rope or twine he's using hold before it snaps and oops right back into the ocean again.🤔

all containers should be consigned. that would give them value once used, if they have dollar value, they will be picked up, otherwise, it s considered as trash... the boat is a start, with time, it can evolve into something very interesting. the gum products are nice, and I d certainly try a pair of shoes if only by principle. good show!

Ismael is an example of the type of young entrepreneur who should be supported by those with money, not just the young in the West making robots and other tech. We have plenty of companies already making tech, but that's not helping 2nd / 3rd world countries like this who are victims of big corporate greed, companies who have no concern over the pollution they are creating. If Ismael could have a YT channel and a Patreon account, I reckon he'd receive massive support.

Ismael is nothing. He is only doing creative disposal, not any form of environmental stewardship or recycling. He is a twonk. You talk about entrepreneurial tech. Okay. So how about all that PET being recast into food grade PET pellets to be re-processed into new PET bottles. Ever thought of that, you bourgeois drongo ?
