A long video about how I restored a Yamaha Motif 6. I will show you how I took it apart, found the culprit of the strange behaving front panel, some miscellaneous repairs, removed some rust and put it all back together again.
At the end some sound demos for your enjoyment...

Tools used:
- Steinberg UR22mkII + Audio technica 2020 for voiceover
- Olympus E-M10 as video camera
- Manfrotto Magic Arm
- Editing: iMovie (Easy bits) + Davinci Resolve (difficult bits)

I have one button that must be touched slightly to the left to work so far after owning this synth since 2002. I could never do anything like this , but I admire the skill shown here.

I reopaired a couple keys on mine. I ordered a new battery, although it was the right part number it was just a tad too thick to stay in the battery holder. I haven't gotten around to ordering another one from a different manufacturer.

The tactile switch underneath would be my prime Suspect: replace it or have it replaced…

Hola... Quiero hacerte una consulta.. Cada ves q enciendo mi motif xs6 suena como una gran interferencia en los parlantes, ya revise y no son los cables de amplificación, definitivamente es el instrumento...podrias ayudarme?Saludos desde COSTA RICA...gracias

Thanks for the videos Help me on how to fix my Motif 6 it freezes all over a sudden and when I tried removing cables on the motherboard and fixing them back it started saying ''Reboot me without touching the keyboard'' I don't know what to do next

I am having trouble getting my MOTIF ES7 to transmit midi as an external control board. The only driver I can find is the Yamaha WDM driver and while it recognizes my Yamaha Portable grand,, it does not register the ES 7 in my DAW midi input list. It recognizes it as an output device to send signal to but not the source midi controller. Any suggestions... oh I am using windows 10. .

I know that the Motif 6 has a battery. How easy is it to access and replace?

Remove the backpanel, you should see a CR2032 sryle battery in a batteryholder. Just remive it and out in a new one. Note: battery is only used for the real time clock, not for storing patches…

Very likely a “cold solder joint” on the Lmono output jack. Easy fix: resolder jack vonnections on jack pcb

Hey Reynard, I have A ES 6 that wouldn't boot, stuck on Yamaha Symbol. Then, now, no power at all. How do I test the power supply to see proper output voltages? No test pins, Sharp power supply. Any help would be greatly appreciated! BTW, awesome playing skills!! Aloha, Jerry in Hawaii

I have a button issue with my Mo6. For some reason I get taken to another menu when pressing some of them.

That is exactly the same issue as with the Motif in this video! Check all the LEDs on the panel boards usingg the diode check function on your multimeter and replace the defective ones…

How do you test if the jack board went bad?

Check for „cold solder joints“ on the jackplug sockets and flat cable connectors: see my top 8 of synth faults video on this channel for details

Wow I’ve been there with my MK1 S90. Why these synths rust???!!! My good old Roland D-50 has no single rust since 1989! I do keep a regular annual maintenance on the S90, otherwise problems happen. I’ve changed 70% of the keys, clean up all switches, changed some capacitors, grease the potentiometers and now the power supply is down again… Not a big deal but these Yams really requires good care!

Does the plug in work at all? Do the Voices work? Try re-downloading the voices and performances (see user manual for how to do this)

I've repaired and built many classic motifs and motif xs, but I bought a mother board on a gamble, it was advertised as bad, no sound so I bought it thinking it was a bad sound board. I'm self taught without a electronic background ( using meters etc.) My question what on that motherboard might keep the keyboard from producing sound? EVERYTHING else on the board works including the sound board.

I wiukd start with checking the signal chain from DACs to the outputs woth a scope: broken opamps, caps… also checkmif there is data going tonthe DACs. Second, double check if the output stage gets proper + and - supply voltages and that the opamps get it..

And check all board interconnects… output pcb: all output jacks have no dry solder joints?

I noticed the battery on the video. Can you tell me which battery that is? I have an XS8 that is dumping memory upon start up and defaults to factory reset. I've spoken to Yamaha "support" who claims no such battery exits, but there it is clear as day.

That battery is just for the real time clock, not for patch etc. Storage, so that cannot be the cause. Does it restore factory presets after each startup? (Is there a message at startup saying so?)

(It is a standard CR2032 battery)

Btw: this is the first motif which has the battery I checked the service manual, the Motuf XS does not have a battery
