The tape is more for keeping the blade cool and preventing it from burning the wood. The adhesive in the tape somehow helps burning. I always recommend at least a layer of clear packaging tape when cutting ANY hardwood. Try it on a sample piece and you will be amazed at the difference. For back side tear out, it is best to use reverse-tooth blades.
