Beautiful symphony. It's a youth composition, with a strong influence of Tchaikovsky.

But this one lived well into the middle of the 20th century and kept his artistic & melodic inspiration to the end.

Very good. Tuneful throughout like a Glazanov. Thanks, I am getting familiar now with Gliere's symphonies.

Great pairing with outer space. I don't know this Romantic work real well, but in general, like his writing. (I went to school with Steve Gunzenhauser) How's your isolation progressing? This is Kelly's last day at school in 2020. She's cooking up a neat Christmas Dinner for the two of us: roast beef (horseradish for me), green-bean casserole, mashed potatoes, Christmas Cake. What's Alden's family menu? Feeling good for a change. AAH! Hope your weeks's going fine, and that you have a nice Eve, and trip to Florida,. Of course, we miss you, and hope to make it up down the line.

Tchaikovsky died seven years earlier but his compositional spirit lived into the early 20th-century with this nice Symphony by Gliere (I guess especially Movs II - IV). Rimsky Korsakov's influence is also there.

Also Borodin and Balakirev. Basically all the important Russian nationalist composers.

This music is absolutely sumptuous .... rich melodic speech, harmonies breathtaking orchestration constantly renewed in the use of the stamps of the orchestra, in short a Babylonian sound architecture erected by humble and immense master !

Awesome piece, the only other thing I'm familiar with of Gliere's is his 12 violin duos. This piece is stunning.

Gliere's Harp Concerto is a masterwork, without doubt one of finest harp concertos ever composed. There are performances available here on RU-vid, you should give it a listen...

"like" on 23 April 2016 :) Gliere lived in Stalinist USSR, and LOTS of music from that era has been forgotten. With the advent of You Tube, this neglect is being corrected. Also, Gliere had the very very bad luck in that Stalin called Gliere his favorite composer....the kiss of death to his reputation. Sort of like how Wagner is still boycotted by some due to his being the favorite composer of Hitler. Fortunately, YOU TUBE makes such boycotts silly, and a good thing to.

Surely, Rakhmaninov was indebted to Gliere.....

Harry Andruschak, Glier was born in 1875. long before the revolution. He is "forgotten" in the west as well as many other great Russian composers. there were hundreds of good Russian composers. look up vid "top 30 Russian composers", I am sure you have never heard about 4/5 of them.

@@steveegallo3384 The other way around - Rachmaninov had written a lot of orchestral music before Gliere made his first attempt.

The Slovak Philharmonic, led by Stephen Gunzenhauser, is credited in the introductory matter below the movements and their running times.

My observation is that the music of most Soviet-era composers had a cold and uninspired flavor. Gliere's music is not like that at all. He was truly a classical romantic. Nearly (if not totally) everything he wrote brims with melody and warmth.
