Greetings and welcome to another cheapo phone review!
If you have been around for a while...you may have met Susan before.
If you haven't...well, this is a nice video to get you and Susan acquainted.
In 2018 I stumbled across the Susan M5 phone and decided to review it.
It was terrible.
So then I decided to buy another one to maybe see if I just got a bad unit.
It was still terrible.
Now that it is 2022, another Susan M5 has arrived and this time I wanted to give it a chance. Maybe I was too harsh on it.
So I have re-reviewed it and well...I can't say too much more about this thing.
It qualifies as the WORST Android Phone I have ever come across. It BARELY works.
So sit back, grab a drink and a snack and I'll let you and Susan get to know each other, fairly sure you won't be friends after this one...

Oh boy, if you remember seeing this device in 2018...here it is again. It returns. Is it any better? Nope...it's just as bad as I remember it. Now I own 3 of the things so what am I even doing at this point in time. I just wanted to revisit it since it has been 4 years and give my more "modern" take on it and well this is the result. UA stands for User Agent, which is a string your browser sends when you connect to a website, to let it identify what kind of device/application is accessing it. Setting it to iPhone probably just made the default browser identify itself as an iPhone browser on an iPhone

I remember this from using a Windows Phone a few years ago. I had to download the UC browser and set the User Agent to iPhone, because the default Internet Explorer had a bit of a trouble with mobile websites.

a browser i used on my old android 2 samsung had it. a website gave me a popup saying that my iphone 4 was infected.

@@hyperturbotechnomike Sometimes your browser was capable of displaying normal "modern" (for the time) web code, but the site developers used to check for iPhone or some Android version, just to specifically "make sure" that it worked. So by spoofing the UA string, you could receive that "modern" version of the site.

Because the chipset (Spreadtrum SC7731) appears under Baseband, means that the chipset includes a modem that apparently supports HSPA+. The main reason it doesn't connect is because the IMEI is invalid. Someone took rejected/spare devices and went for the quick buck method. Not that you can do a lot anyway, the CPU stutters even when idling.

I think it has more to do with the ram and storage strangling it. Even a dual core cortex a5 processor shouldn't be that bad.

UA is the user agent. It just sends a certain info to websites, which can adjust how it is displayed. Back in the days you could change it in some browsers like Opera for Android, nowadays all you get is usually a "Desktop view" button, since you no longer need this ^^

hey so i found out today that the number with the circle thing around it is actually used to tell the customer how long the battery should last for before it needs replacing i thought this was a pretty interesting thing how most flagship phones have 5 years and this one had 10. 😂

Yeah even my dad's old HTC Desire C, a budget phone from 2012, is better than this. It could even run Android 5 via Cyanogenmod, though as it is quite old, it's very slow and the storage has started to die. For the price of this Susan, you could get an old Galaxy S4 or something that's FAR superior.

The only time I've seen that kind of edge only blurring was from an SLR lens where someone disassembled it and put the front element in backwards. It can make for some trippy photography in the right setting, but something tells me that wasn't the intent here. Lol

I could see a use case here if the battery was halfway decent. You still have a touch screen experience but it makes you never want to use your phone minus the very core functionality, if it could make calls, send texts and do timers/calendar it would be a great way to force yourself to use a phone less

I have found Susan M5 for sale in a joblot from Lithuania two years ago. I have purchased it, and was playing around with it. I have found nothing interesting. Battery is now unusable (doesn’t charge) but I must stick there a Nokia battery any try that animation changing 🤩

This would be a budget phone from let's say 2013 . 256 MB RAM, basic 2D games, rear camera working when it is not too bright, front camera just a gimmick. Videos out of the question. In 2017 it would be already obsolete, they just put 4GLTE on the back to scam unsuspecting. I'm guessing that someone acquired unused stock of parts for cheap and tried to make quick buck.

Thanks for introducing me to SUSAN. Re the choice of boot sequences, I have a "Rugum ip13 Mini" which by default is a WELCOME but can also boot up as SAMSUNG, HUAWEI, OPPO, VIVO, MI, HONOR or Lenovo, by means of a little hidden app called "select".

I've just looked up the Spreadtrum SC6825 specs and wow... It was released in 2013 and the SOC is capable of 2G only though it does have the enhanced data rate versions of 2G like EDGE (enhanced as in you're downloading in KB/s rather than bytes/s). Its Mali 400 GPU also features 256 KB (yes, kilobytes) of VRAM, which might be why GTA wouldn't run. Apart from that it looks like an average 1.2 GHz dual core 32 bit ARM chip.

I would like to get one for my phone collection. Just because the background puppy is so cute :) I had a much worse Android 1.6 chinese phone, though :) I can't remember the brand or name, but it had a 300 MHz CPU and 128 MB RAM, and even the menu was SUPER laggy. Not to mention the VGA camera on the back.

Seeing how clunky and low spec’d this device is reminds me of my first “smartphone” experience, back in mid 2011. The dreaded Samsung SPH-M910.. better known as the Intercept. About the only thing it halfway did correctly was make calls and send texts. I get that smartphones were still a bit rudimentary in those times, but the HTC Evo 3D I replaced it with a couple months later was light years ahead in speed and usability!

A lot of those apps like the FM Radio and the recorder were from HTC. The camera reminds me of my Incredible app & the settings themes. Also, UA is User Agent. the fingerprint for the browser

I bought 2 of these from ebay in 2017. I was living in Dandenong. I got a full refund on one because they lied about the memory. I had fun rooting them and trying to use link to SD to get the system to use the memory card more than the lowly system memory of which only had a few MB to spare. I bricked one of them because I accidentally removed a system file that was linked to the SD and it would boot no longer. They were garbage. I was only out 40 clams.

I would have tried the "Auto" option for preferred network just to see if it made any difference. I'm sure one of my old phones could be locked to GSM or allowed to use 3G as well, but had no option to force 3G. Maybe this is the case here?

The ICS stock launcher was some lighter than that cooey one or whatever it's called, but I recall using something called Lightning Launcher on my old HTC phone from that era when it was getting old. It was super light and could be customized to do just about anything, though doing so was kind of clunky. You would probably need to find an old version apk.

Installed Fruit Slice from the SUSAN M5 files on my Samsung Galaxy S III, and it works like a charm! Probably the best-running game on my phone in 2022! BTW, imo is a WhatsApp clone. My grandfather used it for quite some time on a cheap Allwinner-based tablet.

Those phones will probably break during the shipping. Older Sony Xperias have so fragile screen, i remember pressing the screen on one (i did not even press hard) and the touch digitizer stopped working.

I am currently using a Xperia Z5, really nice phone and the camera is brilliant. Only problem is the touch at the very top of the shereen doesn't work, and it overheats when using LTE and 4K videos recording for too long. The battery is also bad but it is an old phone after all

i guess that it can't find or support any networks is due to band compatibility. i mean it does say TD-LTE on the battery area, and afaik AU networks only uses FDD-LTE bands

I don't think the SoC even supports 4G let alone 3G. Most of the datasheets for the chip say Dual Band GSM. Plus the specs are false with it so I'd say it would be false.

The front and (somewhat) back design reminds me of the Huawei Y6 2015 way more I've had the Y6 before and the front looks EXACTLY the same,with the only back design difference being the back speaker

havent used a mediatek phone in such long while but iirc it is possible to flash any rom on it as long as the rom has the same mt number with spflashtool. idk if that works though, as that thing is pointless, it may be worth a try. with a custom rom it may be usable.

What kind of thought process do you need to think naming a phone "Susan" is a good idea? Is this trying to be like one of those brand knock-offs, pretending to be a Samsung or something? If so, this is probably the worst I've seen... I mean, I've seen Mike for Nike, Adibas for Adidas and stuff like that, but this... ?

Weve had an Opal. It looks the same as that. My Mrs powered it on and the button fell out. So we had to make sure it stayed charged well. That was until the battery switched off with full power. Such a Peese a kerap

I had one of those given to me to try to "upgrade" after my friend ordered this phone thinking it would be a halfway decent dumb-smartphone, and had to find out the hard way that the "People" app starts to crash on launch if you just got a few numbers in your contact list. I think they upgraded the software since mine seemed to have gingerbread on it, but it did connect to cellular networks at least, maybe your IMEI got blacklisted somehow. Also it's not "susan" it's su san! 🤣

That's not Android 4, it is Android 2.3 (you can know it by the layout in the Settings app, also the "Preparing SD card" notification that appears on each boot, and finally the jingle that plays on the bootanimation - although this one was also supported on Android 4.x)

But I'm actually kinda impressed on how they were able to put a light theme on it just to pretend it was an updated Android version. Android 2.x and 3.x didn't have light theme support on the systemUI, it was all dark. Android 4.x could have it (LG did use light-themed UI), but the vast majority of brands still used dark (Samsung, Motorola, etc.) Light theme really only became default starting with Android 5

Update: According to the engineer mode, as you saw, it is Android 2.2 (Gingerbread really shares a lot of design with Froyo)

The whole UI is quite the mish mash. The moment I see it says Android 5 I thought no way. It's Jelly Bean at best. Then I saw the ICS browser. Then Gingerbread elements and the notification ticker. Until eventually it revealed itself as Froyo in the user agent 😂

@@letssaylalala Yes, I definitely find it interesting how well they worked in theming the UI to look like a modern Android version. It remembers me of the old days of Galaxy Y ROMs. There was some wonderful theming ROMs with full glass-like UI (like Windows 7) that ran on top of Android 2.3. But there was also real Android 4.4 ports that were incredible. (Running on a 160Mb storage - 512Mb system partition i think, 190Mb RAM phone)

@@JPGT huh. I had Galaxy Y's distant cousin, the Xperia X8. 600 Mhz single core and probably the same amount of storage. I was an absolute ROM junkie lol. CM6, 7, 9, 10, you name it. Lost the phone sometime after. I moved to the first gen Moto G but by then I sort of lost interest and enjoyed stock ROM. Good times.

EXIF data says MIUI, hinting poorly at xiaomi, yet the phone itself (at least from the front) looks very much like a Huawei Y5II from about the same time period, which coincidentally also came in gold, pink and white... hmmmm 🤔

It technically did RU-vid better than my first smartphone now does, a Wildfire S. The ye olde stock RU-vid app gets a 404, and the browser offered to download a couple vids before RU-vid suddenly cottoned on to the fact I was using Gingerbread and shut the party down. The font they used to the Susan text is quite nice. The kid toy bright coloured UI gubbins is awful.
