If I had cash for every time early Call of Duty chose to copy Enemy at the Gates to avoid doing research/writing I would have a computer good enough to play something else.
@@enjoythedecline3616 I'll preface this by saying I'm drunk and interested. I want to play Far Cry 5 on my new TV. With headset and windows, I figure a full set up with a 3080 will be 1200, is this an incorrect assumption?
Another banger of a video and good on you for tackling the Wehraboo blocking battalion 40k commissar meme. Rants that are usually written by guys with an unhealthy knowledge of the Tiger tank engine schematics and who definitely did not storm the Capitol building on Jan 6th.
The Devs didn't just see Saving Private Ryan, the series was literally co-funded by Steven Spielberg, the lead director and producer of Saving Private Ryan.
@Spitfire_1940 yeah what happened actually was medal of honor was funded and created by Spielberg but some of the developers split off and made call of duty
Only played through this game once on veteran. The tank missions were actually a sigh of relief after playing an entire campaign with no health. I also really enjoyed the cute credits scene where you watch a guy run through all the campaign missions.
Thank you so much for educating about not only the penal battalions but the fact that soviet army didn’t send men into the war without weapons. Literally argued this point for years and feel like I’m just shouting into a void. Not a communist either, just believe you do a disservice to yourself by not knowing the truth when it comes to history.
Infinity Ward only made up to MW2. They then proceeded to basically all walk away after MW2 launch due to friction with Bobby Kotik. They go by Respawn now though. Love these reviews!
People seem to not understand or appreciate that, as cheap and lazy as it is by today's standards, call of duty's recreation of scenes from movies and shows like Enemy at the Gates and Band of Brothers was done during a time back when the idea of a video game being able to faithfully recreate such scenes was a landmark innovation in game development and writing ability rather than just lazy... that and the belief that the Eastern Front WASN'T a meat grinder of unarmed troops charging machine guns wasn't common knowledge outside of historians. Remember, CoD's whole thing was to show that, unlike Medal of Honor, no soldier fights alone, that you (nearly) always have backup with you in some capacity. Besides, World at War also parrots Enemy at the Gates with its fountain sniping scene, and people don't complain about that quite as much.
That's because it didn't parrot the heavily criticised and proven to be historically inaccurate human wave tactics, just small fragments of fighting here and there. The original vision of CoD was to honour the death of soldiers in WW2 by faithfully recreate the grim and gritty fighting of the war, not making a goddamn Hollyweed movie. Remember, CoD 2 came out just 2 years after CoD 1 and was highly praised for its accuracies, especially in the Stalingrad campaign. Yes, the commissar still treated your soldier like dirt, but he cared enough to tell the poor sod to go get a PPSh-41 with full ammo in the armory before fighting the nutsze. That was what a commissar was supposed to do, inspire and guide the troops, not throwing unarmed soldiers into a meat grinder. Bonus point to commissar Markhov in World at War for his epic speeches and for fighting alongside his troops.
I can HIGHLY recommend 'Ivans War' and 'Stalingrad' - Both authors had access to archives in Moscow, and have both been very acclaimed. If you want to know more about russians under ww2. Some of the things you state, are wrong compared to what they have to say. Nevertheless, surely the soviet campaign is overly done. As you rightly state.
Once again, appreciate you Elmo. The myth about how the Soviets treated their soldiers is one of the worst and recurring historical inaccuracies that remains in our heads. The Soviets were thrown into a struggle for their very survival, politically and as horrid as it sounds, racially. (The Nazis made it very clear that the Slavic peoples were just as bad as Jews.) The Soviet state deserves much criticism, but for the right regions. Their conduct in the early to mid war shouldn't be where that criticism lies.
Now imagine playing this game without knowing a shred of English which is what i did when when i played the game in in 2007 when i was 6-7 lmao, the fact that i got stuck in the training mission cause i didnt know what to do when you had to look at the posters i think says it all. But its good to see that someone sees this game the slightly nostalgic way i do.
I loved medal of honor as a child. It was up there with SOCOM, metal gear, and the original Cod games as shooters I loved as a kid. Also it's crazy to think I'm watching youtubers who are my age, we were born the same year. I remember being 14 and thinking "man those RU-vidrs are so damn old" Also also: you should review the Army men games
@@elmosanchez Army men RTS was the shit on the ps2. I even have it on steam, I think you can still play the multiplayer too. That said, Sarge's heroes on the N64 was actually challanging i can't believe i played with those controls
@@HiGlowieOld school battlefield? Bf3, 4 and 1 are easily the best in the series, they've got the most vehicles, guns, customization and the best maps, also they look great and play well too.
@@HiGlowiei’m just gonna say it, modern cod is overhated. Modern Warfare 2019 was an amazing game that reinvented the franchise and was truly a labor of love by the devs
Yep, in general more people should know Operation Overlord was not just US thing. Few months ago i read article about canadians fightin in Italy. You guys deserve recognition in games and movies.
Context: They were many instances of rifle shortages in WW1 in Russian Empire, and especially in the beginning of the war after major defeats of 1914. Mainly in 1915, sometimes soldiers were thrown into the no-man's land without any weapons in order to scavenge the rifles from dead bodies (friendly and enemy alike). The Russian government was forced to order as much rifles abroad as it could, and that's how "Winchester Nagant" came to be, a Winchester that used Nagant 7.62 clips.
10:02 wait that guy saying Baker Company is that the same voice actor as in Company of heroes 1 (airborne missions)? the whole blocking detachment and no guns. from what I understand that was only at limited part of the front at the early stages of the war by stalingrad it was fixed (and there is also some notes about when they say there was no guns for the men) im not talking 100 men should have 90 rifles, 6 smg and 4 MG. what this front had was 100 rifles for 100 men and not a super lot of ammo (not as enemy of the gate or the game would portrait it 100 men 40 rifles, 5 smg and 5 pistols.
Please for the love of god can i finally see someone who understands using lean is required for this game. Instead of blinding standing in the open like a brain dead console peasant. **holds breathe proceeds to watch video**
33:33 yup trash player complaining about enemies but proceeds to play game incorrectly. The point here is to quickly lean out of cover take a shot, then return to cover. Run from cover to cover not blindly in the open.
for someone younger than me, your knowledge on WWII, older classic movies, along with your appreciation for these older shooters that paved the way for the popular games of today, is beyond impressive. A good portion of the people in MY generation give 0 shits about these older games. Quake, 3D Realms, even POSTAL are all words that make my friend group scratch their head. Hats off to you sir
Call of Duty: Ghost's Multiplayer was great, its "Zombies" Co-op mode was good, and its campaign story was okay. But most importantly to Ghost's reputation, was how its presentation and advertisement was absolutely TERRIBLE, and likely plays the most significant part as to why people remember it so poorly.
This guy gives off major old school youtuber vibes like i'm watching in 2010 or something haha. Now do a video on COD 3 it has one of the greatest cod campaigns of all time, cheers!
I was 7 playing this new and haven’t played it since I was probably 9ish, so many memories brought back here and you can really capture how well they tried to portray the invasion! Great vid with just the right amount of comedy!

Please do review on Vietcong. It came out in a same year and it really is an awsome and super realistic game. It is extremely immersive that it feels like you are there. They did so much research and work and in some ways Vietcong is even better than CoD 1. I beg you.
I think I remember a video from Military History Visualized that examined the myths about blocking detachments and found that the Heer executed more of their men than the Red Army did. Strafbat were also used by all major armed forces in WW2
Amazing video 👍just as well put together as united offensive and cod 2 please do call of duty 3 next as I think is one of the disliked games of the original three but I think it is great
I'm gonna say it Infinite Warfare is probably one of the best CODs out there and one of the few that dare to take actual risks, the game was hated for no reason and basically gave PTSD to any of the COD developers about taking risks, doing new stuff and not nostalgia bait their audience
When COD first came out it was a perfect storm that people not around back then may not fully appreciate. Saving Private Ryan had completely changed the film landscape in the late 90s and Hollywood had paid attention by making WW2 films popular again (instead of milking the Vietnam cow) in a way which was still fresh in 2003 when COD came out. A month before the release of the game the WW2 film "Saints and Soldiers" came out, specifically it came out on the two year anniversary of 9/11 which leads me onto the next point. 9/11 had made the west desperate for a victory so people were looking back in time to the "glory days". For years media had been obsessed with Vietnam but that was a loss, and a tragedy to warn against. Now the media needed to do it's bit to help rally people to sign up to join the war on terror and displace the dictators of the Middle East just like Grandpa did in Europe. At the start of the year America lead a multi nation invasion of Iraq and it was still seen as a valiant thing and a great victory, not a costly forever war that was ultimately pointless like it is seen now. War was on everyone's mind and WW2 provided the perfect playground for those who wanted to cash in.
Interesting, though I kind of doubt the "media" was specifically trying to build support for Iraq. Patriotic fervor might have made people hungrier for stuff like this, but ultimately WW2 media has always been pretty popular, and there were other victories after WW2 like the Gulf War itself.
I've played through the original cods so many times I can play through them entirely blindfolded, so I find it really interesting to see someone elses perspective on the way they play. Good stuff.
What i don't get about the Austrian Alps missions is how exactly did the Americans get out? Helicopters were still in experimental stages, so did they just bail to Switzerland? It's ironic saying that CoD plagarized early US missions from Band of Brothers considering that Stephen Ambrose, the writer of the book, was a massive plagarizer
To your complaints about the British missions I can say, Skill Issue! It is meant to test your capability and to annoy all the blokes that do not tread with caution. But on a serious note, I still remember playing the campaign when I was like 7 and being scared shitless of the dam and boat mission because there where no friendly npcs to guide and cover for me.
The 507th PIR was at Camp Toccoa along 101st Airborne. It was attached to the 82nd at Normandy and then later attached to the 17th Airborne for Operation Varisty.
2:54 I liked Ghosts campaign. The levels have a lot of the MW trilogy DNA in them. That's why it's good. Sure it lacks some stuff but hey, it's not terrible to go through imo. 4:06 Glad to see people understand how revolutionary COD AI was. Especially in COD2. 15:12 There is no evidence connecting the two characters storyline wise. 17:50 Sure the weakest of the 3 but it's still not bad! Come on! Also Cod Ghosts and Ep1 fan? We agree on many things. 20:47 I get the dam being boring, but man... even the chase? That was one of the highlights of the game for me! Idk maybe im nostalgia blinded... 22:00 I dont really hate it, i like the concept a lot, but it gets quite hard at times and i get why one wouldn't like it. Can't say the same for the truck chase, that thing was badass and idk how you found it boring. 28:34 Again, there's no real connection between the games. It's probably just names the devs liked and re-used in later games. The name Borodin from the first Stalingrad level, also makes its appearance in MW2. It's the fake name Allen has while with Makarov. See how it doesn't mean anything? 30:00 Gotta say, this has to be one of the biggest challenges in COD on veteran. Infamous level. 33:50 There are plenty of flanks in this level. All you gotta do is explore. It's a pretty open and unique level. I don't get the hate on this one either. I guess you just hate british levels xD 34:00 I can say the same for the Berlin level. There's tons of MGs all over and barely any flank for them. But it didn't seem to bother you there. But sure, the theme alone in this one makes it special. Good vid though! Glad to see classic COD enjoyers around!
I had played allied assault back then but cod was the first game that really felt like you weren't winning the war alone. You actually had teammates. And the mg42 sounded so good.
Loved this! Do you have any plans on making a video on the medal of honour franchise? would love to see some stuff on frontline or the other games. also verry accurate comment on the average Latvian traffic conditions :D .
1:22 Man, i can remember that big CRT monitor, 640x480 resolution. Playing on my Dad's pc. Just after watching saving private Ryan. This mission was it. It was the magnum opus of ww2 missions.
@@elmosanchez lol. As someone who haven't touched these games 15 years now I have to thanks to you. Great vid btw. I'd try Enlist if I didn't burned my dGPU. Since my laptop is about to see 10 years of age, i am just saving to get a decent replacement altoghter now.
I played the demo over and over and over for this game before I bought my first gaming PC in 2006 and bought the entire series. I still have the discs. I'm old.
If you played CoD WWII and felt the common disappointment and disgust among those who have, then play Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. It's the game CoD: WWII wanted to be. In fact, in CoD 2 and 2 Big Red One, they casted several actors from Band of Brothers to do the voices. Frank John Hughes as Alvin Bloomfield is perfect. The entire squad actually interacts like a family. There's growth, there's depth, there's emotion.
Who would've guessed the inaccurate depiction of Order 227 and the Russian human wave tactics were just around 80 years too early and for the wrong war. And who would've guessed ES would point out the inaccuracy of this depiction, but not that Pavlov's House probably didn't even happen.
Well to be fair, and this is coming from someone who's grandfather actually participated in the War in a way - by fleeing after the long siege and the freezing winter came to Stalingrad. The amount of people who actually perished is quite big, and from what i understand most of those fresh conscripts really DIDN"T have weapons most of the time, being told to geniueny find one off a corpse if they wanted to live. Order 227 WAS actually in effect and people WERE executed tho not as often as portrayed. Mostly 227 was enacted on NKVD officers that FAILED in their duties, of failing to keep soviet technology out of german hands by any means necessary. With the fear of death on every officer looming above their heads, they had to enact their own draconian rules on their squads and platoons, to dissuade their own men from running away by executing them on the spot themselves. The soviet approach, really was ruthless in a way - tossing bodies onto the enemy, hoping their would run out of bullets faster than the human wave tactics would succeed. Hell they kept doing it with penal battalions in order to cut down on important losses of their elite troops.
I had my dad buy this for me on a lark around 20 years ago. dunno why, up until then I had mostly played the occasional strategy game/sim game on the PC. It was my first shooter for the PC as well though I had played some on the gamecube including the poorly regarded Medal of Honor Rising Sun (that I don't remember shit about.) I remember the occasional commercial for it on TV and the box talking about the battles you'd fight in. It blew the shit out of me. I had never played something as intense before and it (alongside the stellar expansion UO) and Rome Total War are the two game that got a 11 year old me into history and I got my parents to buy nearly every game about history they could see. But I agree, when I replayed it a few months back, most of the British campaign and half of the Soviet campaign or so are just dogwater and I straight up forgot some levels. Which is a shame because despite the hollywoodness of the Soviet campaign, it has the best moments.
The allied airborne drops into Normandy were a disaster, but also a success. The German defenders, for varying reasons, were scrambling around everywhere trying to find these paratroopers, taking some defenders and equipment off the Atlantic wall and German soldiers further inland away from targets that the French resistance could hit. Keep in mind, they still believed D-Day was going to happen at Calais, so the Germans defending the coast of Normandy were fewer and less equipped than the soldiers in Calais. Not to say they were a pushover, Hitler did want the entire Atlantic wall up to strength despite believing in the Calais landing. But every soldier, gun, fuel can, and bandage misplaced, lost, broken, and used in fighting the paratroopers were not gonna be there for defending the beaches come D-Day.
3:35 idk man. In half life 2 the combine soldiers will suppress your position while their shotgun guy comes rushing in, or they will flank you from all sides, and if one of them is retreating they will provide covering fire and it's not scripted.. I don't think cod 1's AI has aged well, only reason why I think that they're smart in some areas is because they have pixel perfect accuracy, especially their machine guns.
Those stealth mission which are like third of the game. Actually like half because half of russians missons feels that way too, are so anti-early cod to me. That's what I love about United offensive it feels like actual battles and british campaing feels much better desinged too with natural bombardment-resistance-SO mission story. Even "stealth" missions in UO give you more allies. First cod mission feels so uncanny and eary when you are suddenly alone.
Shoutout to Lieutenant Nora Selter, Her real name is Jamie Grey Hyder. What a women, an Angel, her performance in the infinite war so gripping, honestly I'd fight front lines in space for her. When Isreal invades Lebanon, I'm leading the charge just for her.
