Wow! If I was on such a committee I would select quilts like your first. Before the standard book template patterns and commercial fabrics any day. I respect anyone who has such patience to make any quilt, but free form hand sewn it extra good. Glad you made the water quilt anyway 'cause it's a beauty!
I do not claim to have the slightest knowledge of how to judge a quilt, however, the amazement and awe evoked in me, by looking at this piece are undeniable. I feel excited just looking at it through my little phone screen. It looks amazing no matter how one chooses to interpret it (I see a well, an oasis, a hope, a treasure in the middle of a dried up land/sand/soul) and the craftsmanship of your work...well...let's not even go there. Hats off to you miss Margaret.
"They" haven't always honored the quilts of Gees Bend either. But look how beautiful, intriguing, and inspiring they are. Keep your art flowing...lively like a river.
Their loss. I love the concept as well as aesthetics. The technique is very special. I love it. You are one of my models and motivators to believe that there is always time to try and perfect a new style and technique.
If "they" can't recognize AMAZING when "they" see it, perhaps " they " need their eyes checked!! Ignore "them" and rejoice in your INCREDIBLE art! It's fantastic and "we" agree , it's your best!!
BEAUTIFUL! The quilt/kawandi AND you! Thank you for the close-ups. I am almost finished my first attempt at one of these and wondered if i was headed in the right direction. I am. Yahoo!
You have helped me develop an addiction to making Kwandi’s. And I am working my way to figuring out how to visit the Siddi quilters. But after 14 hrs in a plane to Ghana from NY a few yrs ago I am not sure I am up to it. Keep being inspired by your rejectors. As the kids say “haters gotta hate!” It’s beautiful. 😂
It does not matter one bit .. it is still beautiful .. plus they get a lot of applications therefore they cannot accept all of them ... don t take it personally ... it is a beautiful quilt.
Hi Margaret. Your work is very important in informing people about this technique and opening up artistic possibilities through a wonderful medium. I do hope you make a book about Kawandi making, so that all your research and artistic endeavour will reach a wide audience. The very existence of a book would force curators to take Kawandi seriously. I suspect that your work did not proclaim a sufficiently obvious political message. All the best.
I love your quilts, I'm learning, I can't afford to travel to different countries. I have to learn from the wonderful people on the web. Thank you all.
Every great artist was rejected at some point in their life....not sure why really except the "powers that be" are never quite capable of seeing ahead. No vision.
