If you're not British (or Australian) it helps to know that we tend to drop the ''H'' on a lot of words eg; ''ow are you? 'appy birthday, 'ere it is, so fork-handles becomes fork 'andles which sounds like four candles.

As already noted, this duo was considered some of the very best of British humour. It's worth seeking out their many other sketches, all of which are truly brilliant. It's all about clever wordplay, and sometimes non-word play lol. They were absolute masters of twisting the King's English to wring as much hilarity out of it as possible.

Ronnie Barker (Customer) and Ronnie Corbett (Shop Assisiant) are 2 comedy greats from the 1970s who were the 2 Ronnies which was a sketch show as you saw. They were not always together as each had careers independent of each other. Ronnie barker had 2 big hit sitcoms called "Porridge" set in a prison and "Open All Hours" about a small corner shop. Ronnie Corbett had his own sitcon called "Sorry".

Good Reaction and,at last, someone reacted to the end of the video, where there was an explanation.The "Bill Hooks" reference which referred to an English swear word starting with B and ending in "ocks". In the opening "4 Candles" he said "FORK Handles" i.e. handles for forks. "The Two Ronnies-Sweet Shiop" is among endless other sketches but the "Ronnie" on the right was ill when he made this and that is why they ended their long career after this episode though he did live,in retirement, for a few more years. His name was Ronnie Narker and he wrote the scripts, sometimes sending them in under the pseudonym "Gerald Wiley" as he knew if he used his own name they would, automatically, be accepted and he wanted them chosen on merit:)

I see this problem time and time again and it’s so painful and almost cringeworthy to watch. These typically, culturally British skits are constantly recommended to Americans (and others) who have little or no understanding of the skit’s contemporary British culture. This is not a criticism of the American (or other) trying to understand it, but a strong criticism of those who recommend these videos. It’s senseless. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Don't worry you are an American you are not the first American not to understand English, and the intelligent thought that went into this legendary comedy sketch bought by the Genius writing done by the late Ronnie Barker, one half of the Two Ronnies comedy duo. I wasn't sure if you would understand the humour in this, when I saw the title. OMGosh LOL. Have you ever seen Billy Connolly? If not, check out his Dwarf on a Bus sketch. It is so terribly funny.

The customer is asking for 'Fork 'andles' ie fork handles. In London, and elsewhere, we drop our aitches. The shopkeeper understood 'Four candles'.

This already over-exposed sketch seems to have become one of those initiation ceremonies for reaction channels - just like Ghost Love Score and Inca Roads. Personally as Two Ronnies clips go I'm always advocating Ponting Punting and Plumstead Ladies Choir.

Sadly, the piece at the end was likely the last time that the Two Ronnies ever appeared on screen together. Ronnie Barker, on the right passed away soon afterwards. He had already retired from the act and from comedy years before, and this show was a special looking back at the many years that Ronnie Corbett, the short one, and Ronnie Barker had shared the screen together on their wonderful show The Two Ronnies. They were comedy geniuses together and apart, with Ronnie Barker especially starring in his own amazing sitcom Porridge and other shows while maintaining his incredible partnership with Ronnie Corbett. Barker was also an amazing comedy writer, being responsible for many of scripts that they performed together on the Two Ronnies. Sadly they are both now gone, but for many millions who adored their shows in the 1970s through the 1980s their legend lives on.

This was a comedy sketch in one of their TV shows, so it was designed to have words which had different meanings and cause confusion. We could all have done what this lady suggested and analyse the meanings, but then there would have been no comedy in the sketch. I am not being rude or impolite, but may I suggest that this lady sits back and just enjoys the humour and acting of two superb performers.

Agreed… except it’s not really her fault. I don’t understand why people recommend these videos to other nationalities who have little chance of understanding the cultural references. 🤷🏻‍♂️
