well the value of output is dependent on both base and input given in a log . if base is grate than one and input is less than one then its output will be negative .if base is less than one and input is greate than one then output is negative .

Answer to the H.W. question:- Output is +ve : when input is greater than or equal to the base. Output is -ve : when input is less than base but greater than 0. Output is 0 : when input is 1 anything be the base. #Note:- Base should be greater than 0 but not equal to 1. Edit:- The condition for the base should always be followed otherwise log won't be defined in all cases.

For log(x), x being any number, log(x)=0 if x=1. For values less than 1, it gives negative. Example, log(100) taking base 10 is 2. This is positive. If we take 0.1( which is 10 to the power -1), we get log(0.1)=-1. So if the number is proper fraction,ie: it lies between 0 and 1, logarithm is negative.
