Einstein (and his friends) came to some pretty crazy conclusions about gravity. By the end of this video, you'll have no choice but to come to the same conclusions. We'll start with a little background though: From Galileo in 1632 all the way to Einstein in 1905 and 1915.

The Science Asylum One is on a space ship that will circle the planet in one minute and is looking at a clock at exactly 12.00. Person launches and returns in 1 minute. The clock will say 12.01 but the clock on his spaceship will say a slightly different time. Isn't time only slowing down from one perspective?

@@ScienceAsylum Problem...Gravity doesn't pull down, but that's how it is taught in schools. Since no force is pulling down, and downward weight is therefore the reaction to upward acceleration, then Huston we have a problem. That means not a single thing can fall unless FIRST and foremost the thing that supports the thing from under the thing, is FIRST removed. That's why all building demolitions are started at the bottom, except of course on 9/11. Only the third tower, building 7, fell where the support at the bottom gave out first.

Wait. Mass isn't invariant? Does this mean observed mass can change from a different frame of reference? (Is this a dumb question?)
@ScienceAsylum
@ScienceAsylum 8 лет назад
Yes... well, it depends on what you mean by mass. When I say "mass" I either mean "resistance to acceleration" or "gravitational ability." With either of those, yes, observed mass can be different depending on your frame of reference. Sometimes when other people say "mass" they actually mean "rest mass," which is invariant. In my opinion, the adjective "rest" is necessary. Also, it's definitely not a dumb question. It's a common question, but that doesn't make it dumb. This is weird stuff.

Because general relativity and quantum mechanics don't get a long very well. We would like one model to apply to everything, so quantum physicists are trying to look for a model of gravity that fits into quantum mechanics.

The shortest distance between 2 points, a straight line, is described by the arc of a photon. Unless the squirrel is falling at the speed of light, it is not moving through a straight line. Gravity is an actual curvature (displacement) of space caused by the presence of mass. That's why gravity appears to be a force, but has no energy potential of its own, like the electric or magnetic fields. The only energy you get out of gravity is the energy that was put into it. A hydroelectric dam generates electric energy that originated from solar thermal energy that evaporated the water and lifted that water above the dam. Hydroelectric energy is really solar energy, not gravity energy.
@ronaldderooij1774
@ronaldderooij1774 6 лет назад
The term "arc' is correct, but a bit misleading. You are talking about space. This video is talking about spacetime. The photon will not "arc" in spacetime diagrams. Only acceleration will "arc". You continue to mislead by saying that gravity displaces space. No, it displaces spacetime. Indeed gravity is a consequence of mass (=condensed energy). But wether or not this means that gravity has no potential of its own, is open to debate still. In cosmological terms it is even negative potential in some models. Thanks for the heads up to hydroelectric energy. I did not realise that, but you're right.

If gravity is bending space time to change what straight lines are, then is that why gravity can cause time dilation around black holes?
@ScienceAsylum

That's exactly why... and, technically, gravity causes time dilation no matter how strong it is. The Earth is doing it to all of us right now, but it's too small for a human to notice. GPS satellites have to factor it into the data they're collecting though.

Kinda mindblowing that legendary physicists who discovered these stuff are alive at the same time and knew each other..

This is a great video. Explains the concept well. Michael from vsauce also did a great one like this. In "which way is down"

The speed of your ideas is moving in full acceleration than the energy of my brain, just like the speed of light. I really need to find fuel to energize my brain to be able to catch up your ideas. I indeed believe that someday somehow I can reach your ideas. Thank you for sharing your energy to us.

Glad someone else figured this out. I don't have the TIME for it and the SPACE in my head is limited. I don't have worry my little head about it because most people aren't concerned about the GRAVITY of the situation.

You are the first who took time to analyze the deep implication of Einstein philosophy of physics: - gravity is as fake of a force as centrifugal force or the artificial gravity of a rotating space ship. In all of these cases, we can represent the effective force that an object experience as a "curved space-time". The dice or ball attached to the mirror in the car is getting a slanted gravity by simple addition of vectors, it's space-time fabric is just inclined, notr pointing toward the center of planet Earth anymore.

I remember reading about a photonic boom in a certain fluid I remember wanting to know more. Lol I think it would be a good video ;) keep it up I love when you pull out the content that makes me take a step back and say woh what!?

For decades I have kept coming back to this topic now and then. After a few attempts I understood about half of what was being said. Years later I understood almost all of it but could never quite get the last piece of the puzzle. Your diagrams curving the time axis finally gave me (at least part of) the answer! Thank you! I remember rule 4, but I note that the curved time axis in the diagram is actually a mapping of another reference frame onto our own reference frame. Does that mean that the spacial axis for another reference frame can also curve when mapped onto ours?
@ScienceAsylum
@ScienceAsylum 5 лет назад
It absolutely does mean that. Any space or time path can be curved. It's just that time is the dominant component of any path.
