I’ve been using baking soda on my hair for years. I have low porosity hair and it has helped TREMENDOUSLY with getting moisture in my hair strands. Mixing it with conditioner is what I’ve always done with almond oil too. I haven’t noticed any damage and my hair has felt strong and thick ever since I stopped with all the heat and chemicals. I haven’t noticed a difference in my curls relaxing more but I have noticed product taking in more to my strands compared to when I don’t use baking soda. That’s the only reason I do it! I love your videos. Great info.

wow, am glad for you! Probably because you use a little and its not direct! Hmmm....useful to know this too...how much exactly do you use and which type? And What do you mean by (Mixing it with conditioner is what I’ve always done with almond oil too) - about the almond I mean? (Thanks-my teen dau is LoPo)
@Ineedyoubambii
@Ineedyoubambii 6 лет назад
Olusola Olaniyi I use 2 tablespoons of baking soda with one cup of whatever conditioner I’m feeling at the moment and about one tablespoon of sweet almond oil. I like almond oil because it is a light oil and it’s the only oil that my hair has really taken too. The oil and conditioner really helps with the mix of baking soda IMO. I’ve never really tried it without. I was always nervous the baking soda alone would be too harsh. But I don’t know 🤷🏽‍♀️ lol that might just be in my head. Try it and see if it works for you! This video has great info and you should be cautious, strand test first and see how your hair reacts. I only do this method once a month no more.

Yes, I agree. It worked wonders on my extremely low porosity hair. That’s the reason I’ve used it. Products would always just sit on my hair until I recently started incorporating baking soda into my hair regimen. It’s not for everyone, but for low-po ladies that are struggling with moisture, it’s something to consider.

I wish ALL hair and skin products would have their pH written on them. True I could break out pH paper but still how hard would it be for companies to type that in. I would love to see a video somewhere on someone trying your recipe here. I'm not gonna do it myself though. I'm too scared

My hair is very kinky naturally and I've used baking soda on my hair a few times, and loved the results. I mix 2 Tbsp. Baking Soda with my conditioner and after rinsing it out I do a rinse with ACV. My hair feels soft and it's so much easier to manage. I haven't had any problem with my hair after using it. I try different things to see how my hair reacts. Because everybody's different I like to see what works for me. So far I've found my hair loves baking soda, organic honey, Greek yogurt, and coconut milk. Just to name a few of the items I've experimented with so far.

wow, pls how long have you been using bs in your hair? I once read of a lady that tried only natural products for her hair for a year - bs or acv for shampoo etc, cant remember which is which - the long term damage was not funny...still we are all different from each other aint we...but yet..
@arlenegilmore3928
@arlenegilmore3928 6 лет назад
Marcy Lee I don't use it routinely just occasionally. No it hasn't caused any damage. I have low porosity hair, it's very kinky and gets dry. When I use baking soda it leaves my hair soft and easy to manage.
@arlenegilmore3928
@arlenegilmore3928 6 лет назад
Olusola Olaniyi I use it probably once a month. But I can't imagine it causing long term damage. If I try anything and my hair begins to get dry or brittle I stop using it. I clip my ends, deep condition my hair and work at getting it back to normal. It's hair....it's going to grow and as long as you take care of it, it can be healthy again. I try things to see what works for me. Some people us baking soda to wash their hair on a regular bases and have no problem. Everyone needs to find what works for them.

Arlene Gilmore you are maybe right, well you are maybe someone who speed of growth is quite fast, my hair could not afford any damage, i don't have breakage ends but the growing rate still slow, it will be tough for me if they are damaged again, but everyone with his choice, wish you good luck with bs
@asukachan07
@asukachan07 6 лет назад
Arlene Gilmore It's true that it could be what works for your hair, but maybe the baking soda can't damage your hair in the first place with the amount you use in a mixture with a conditioner. If the conditioner is pH-balanced, then you're probably not getting too much out of the Safe Zone. Then, you rinse out your hair with ACV, basically reversing any effect of baking soda by bringing your hair back to an acidic pH. Baking soda is a great cleaning agent though, so that's a benefit. I hope that the mixture truly agrees with you, and is not slowly damaging your gorgeous curls.

I used baking soda on my hair for a while as part of the max hydration method. At first I had mixed feelings about the result. My hair felt softer and easier to detangle and deal with in general. But it was also flat, limp and kind of lifeless. Still I continued doing MHM because I wanted to give it a good chance before I made up my mind. Big mistake. Fast forward to a few months and multiple baking soda applications later, I began to notice an insane amount of hair breakage and split ends. At first I though it was all the wash n go’s I was doing but the condition of my hair was so bad that I knew it wasn’t just that. Most of the hair was split. Finding a strand that was intact from root to tip was rare. Each strand was split in multiple areas down the length, not just at the very end. I looked up info on baking soda hair damage and immediately regretted putting that stuff on my hair. I should have done all the research before, not after. I also had a really bad experience using it on my skin as an alternative deodorant. Baking soda isn’t child’s play. It can really do a number on your hair and skin.
@gemelo330
@gemelo330 Год назад
Sorry for your experience! Try lemon juice as a natural deodorant. Also, henna is still my fave, even with Locs. Have you tried heavy whipping cream to detangle/deep condition. East Africans traditionally use something similar. hope this helps

@@gemelo330 yeah you want to kill people's hair with lemon though.
@gemelo330
@gemelo330 Год назад
@@asiafinefinereetoptop7730 Please do your research before commenting in the future. To clarify, the lemon juice used with henna is to release the natural dye molecules in the ground up leaves. Further, it can be replaced with green tea which is less acidic. But keep in mind that your hair and skin are also acidic, so using very alkaline products like baking soda is going to have to be rebalanced by an acidic product afterwards. So please explain how I want to kill people's hair again? Not to mention that henna actually STRENGTHENS the hair and prevents breakage. If you knew anything about henna you would have known this and never made the comment in the first place. Baking soda is a chemical and was never meant for your hair. Henna is literally the dried leaves of the lawsonia plant and has been used for literally thousands of years (see Egyptian mummies with henna dyed hair). Any other method of loosening the curls outside of henna is going to literally damage the hair to achieve that result. The loosening of curls with henna is reversible, hence it doesn't do any damage. If you put toxic chemicals like sodium hydroxide in your hair to straighten it, I guess baking soda is a walk in the park 😂FYI they are both alkaline/basic and both damage the hair permanently. Have fun though!

I love the disclaimer. We always wanna have somebody else's curl pattern and make our hair do what theirs does. I've tried a baking soda/ conditioner mix in the past before finding this video, but not as a relaxer nor with that intention. I've used it as an alternative to shampoo, when I needed a stronger Co-wash option to lift product buildup. It did not relax nor damaged my hair, as I did not leave it to sit. Here's what I did : I combined approximately 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 4 to 6 table spoons of regular moisturising vo5 or suave conditioner, and 1 tea spoon acv (there was no method to my madness). I applied the mix gently to my strands first and then gave my scalp a slight massage. I did not rough up my scalp or strands as I knew baking soda is quite abrasive. I washed it out immediately, and followed up with a deep con with protein and moisture, and an oil mixture. As I mentioned I was not planning on relaxing and it did not have that effect on me, but I'm so happy I found this video. It kinda confirms that educating yourself can prevent you from getting yourself in trouble. I think rinsing it out immediately not letting it sit, and following up with a deep con made the difference. I don't practice this technique regularly and I am not advising any to try, however, this is something that I will do again, but now a little more cautiously 😊.

This was so helpful because I used baking soda with my cherry Lola treatment and I remember being amazed at how different my curl patterned look. And then after awhile, I was confused at why my hair was feeling a bit stripped and getting more split ends. And then finally, I had a weird reaction at my hairline and spread to my forehead that seemed to be fungal. I had no idea that I was messing with the balance of my hair and scalp and I was creating those issues with the “deep conditioner”. Thank you so much for the info, it helps to know, to prevent the same mistakes!

I don't want straight hair. I know it's not the best solution but my hair has never been this long and I still have elasticity. I can detangle in five minutes and my go to style is twist outs. I still have very big hair - I love it! I think in the future I will try the baking soda method because I'm sure it's less harsh than what I'm doing now. Thanks for the judgement free delivery. This video is so interesting, I want to try this out on my coarse 4c hair. I’ve been researching on how to relax my hair the natural way just to make it easier to manage.

Thank you for this informatative video. I prefer natural products to loosen my hair pattern as opposed to chemicals. Over the years I've put a lot of stress on my hair. I'm in my 60's now and I want my hair to be as natural as possible but ez to manage. Also I have a daughter and two young granddaughters. I want my daughter to learn about this, the natural way to straighten their hair.

Love the video. Can you do a video on the Chebe power and the science behind it. It seems to the next big thing in the Natura hair community. Thanks

Thanks for the informative video. I tried baking soda a few years ago on my high porosity fine strands: BIG MISTAKE! First time my hair felt great because it removed build up and loosen my texture, then the damage occurs... I'm very mindful of DIYs containing water, because the wrong combination can hurt your hair and scalp!

I liked the video, for the information that it provided. Are there still people with natural hair attempting to straighten their hair?

I had no idea baking soda could change your curl pattern. I know now not to use it when I'm being a kitchen chemist. Thanks for the knowledge.

I tried baking soda on my hair during the time that everyone was trying the Maximum Hydration Method a few years ago. For whatever reason, I actually thought my hair was low porosity. After trying the baking soda and the other steps in the method, my hair was completely wrecked. My hair ultimately got very weak and I never got the "natural curls" that everyone else got. It was after using the baking soda that I realized I was really a medium/ high porosity person and that this whole Maximum Hydration Method was the worse thing I could do to my hair. I actually had to do another big chop after this. I don't think anyone that has medium/high porosity should ever mess with baking soda.

Hi First time to your channel. Wow I must say very professionally and informative. I learned so much in 1 video. So many of these leave out the important stuff. Im not saying intentionally but at a high risk. You get 2 👍👍 and happy 🎃

I've only used baking soda to help exfoliate my scalp, though I've heard of it being used to relax hair texture. Thanks for this explanation.

So good, you took the time to put in all the right information. Thank you! So is it safe to assume that baking soda safer than the regular relaxer like dark and lovely?

I’ve done baking soda as a clarifying option never knew the damage it does to hair(although I’ve done it a handful of times).Great info going forward.

Another great video! I tried so many of the "natural" hair alternatives, clays, baking soda, salt, vinegar rinses and my hair simply "laughed" at each one! I stopped killing myself with the 'nuts and berries' regimes. I wished so hard to find something that could make my wash days smoother. I envied all the naturals who could make them pop a curl! I will say, these methods don't break the bank like the commercial products. So I'm not much of a product junky!

Thanks for sharing this. I would never put something in my hair to intentionally loosen my coil pattern. I've found a regimen that works for keeping moisture in my 4b hair. This definitely seems like a better way to relax hair than a traditional relaxer, though. :)

I don't want to try the baking soda however, I've out of the real protein. Will you have a sale anytime soon? Maybe for breast cancer awareness or domestic violence awareness month?

I'm good. Ima stick to my natural cotton looking hair. Loved the way you explained the risks along with the possible benefits. Now I know never to try baking soda on my hair. I do use it to wash my face though.

I was recently diagnosed with neuro dermatitis that made my hair shed off leaving a balding spot at the back of my head. I started using ORS scalp rub which you mix with baking soda. The results are amazing. Its 4 weeks now I have used that mixture 3 times ( been applying twice a week). The scarring the back is covering up I am non longer hiding my head with scarves. The itch is gone. The flakes are gone. My hair’s low porosity so m gonna try this conditioner
