I have been relaxing my hair nonstop from the time I was 9 years old. I will be 56 next birthday. I have a full healthy head of hair. I have never worn braids or wigs. I relax my hair every 8 weeks. I wash my hair every weak and deep condition every other week. I take a regimen of vitamins and I eat healthy. I also get regular trims. I have absolutely no problems with my hair. Its cheaper to maintain and less fuss. My mother had it relaxed because I had plenty thick hair and she has problems combing it. At the start of menopause I had breakage and I just cut it into a shorter style until grew back out. There is no debate about relaxed or natural. You just have to do what is right for you.

I used to be relaxed my whole life and decided to go natural during Covid lockdowns because I felt adventurous 😂 Now I don’t really see myself going back. I feel like relaxed hair is pretty high maintenance too because you always have to keep up with the relaxer touch ups and make sure to find a way to keep your hair from shedding excessively(which I was not good at 😅) I’m honestly more of a lazy natural, just wash my hair once every 1-2 weeks and leave it in a protective style. That’s what works best for me. At the end of the day, relaxed or natural you still need to make some kind of effort in taking care of it. Just do what’s best for you 😊

My two cents... Lol, how can natural hair not be "difficult" when even our mothers dont know to take care of it, one cant transition to natural hair after relaxing for the first quarter of their life and suddenly know everything it takes to care for kinky hair. Aside from the time and energy, i believe one has to unlearn hair beauty standards and the perception of "neat" hair to fully embrace natural hair or else they'll just be struggling everytime its time to style it. Relaxers do to hair what bleaching does to skin, everybody should sha choose the kind of cancer they prefer I dont see any point in policing what others do with their hair. It doesnt add money to anyone's bank account.

Exactly. My hair is a lot too. I just prefer to relax. I totally understand why my grandma and mum kept it relaxed and it was always healthy and beautiful. I’m just not with keeping it natural it costs me more money because some people’s hair isn’t as thick they use less of the product. I use three times as much which makes it expensive to maintain it natural. I love it relaxed and will continue to. I’m going for a pixie cut. These fumes are not good to inhale or to be absorbed into your skin.I’m tired of people saying it’s possible to have healthy relaxed hair.So you are telling me y’all care more about having « manageable »hair than protecting your body from these fumes and chemicals. Y’all keep talking about having healthy relaxed hair, how about having a healthy body?! Anyways, everyone has their own choices. My question is would you eat a relaxer? I had my natural hair for about 4 years. Its thickness and shrinkage are authentic curios to go back to relaxers because I'm tired of braiding and twisting out and constantly having to get protective styles because my hair isn't the pretty lossy glossy curls. I felt that because unfortunately, even blowouts or silk presses would only last 1-2 days, even with wrapping before heat and humidity takes over.

I've been natural my entire life . Somewhat. I've dyed my hair. A couple times . Same issue . It's a chemical I didn't feel connected to myself. When I used these chemicals. With my natural hair I feel closer to my self , my ancestors , my culture, my GODS AND GODDESSES!! I AM OF THEM. I LOVE THEM I LOVE ALL OF MY CURLS MY TEXTURES AND MY FEATURES.

Yeah I agree. I'm not the biggest fan of black women having to alter their natural hair just for it to look straight all of the time. Black hair isn't straight, so our natural hair is our own lovely ethnic beauty. It's fine if others don't agree and obviously you can do what you want with your hair, but...I can't be the only one that's kind of disappointed in this...

I love your honesty Kamsi and appreciate your transparency!!! Hair is beautiful either way, and I am relaxed as well. Was natural 6 years and was very unhappy and too time consuming. I love being relaxed again and I am NEVER going back natural lol

Kamsi, please preach!!!!!!!! Why can't I appreciate my hair? Why is it seen as “not being done”?

I’ve never been natural but I looove my relaxed hair so much, I can’t imagine my life without it. I do believe natural hair is beautiful and would love to consider it at some point though. Your hair is thriving by the way 🤩😍💗

Wow, I started this journey at the beginning of the year and my hair has grown so well, and for a while I received such harsh comments that relaxing your hair is not natural. I'm happy that you encouraged me once again to continue. Thank you so much Kamsi.

Hi Kamsi! I love how honest you are and I completely agree with you on the sentiment of people thinking my hair isn’t done when it’s simply slicked back. I’ve been contemplating relaxing for yearssss because I usually wear my natural hair pressed straight or in a slicked bun and I love wearing my hair out. I know you can have great hair while relaxed but I find it difficult to find salons that can apply lye relaxers professionally. Can you please make some semi-affordable recommendations in Lagos?

My natural hair is easy to deal with. I think that people don’t view natural as professional so they do all these things to make natural look a certain way. Doing all that work is hard. Natural hair is easy.

@@MsGoodyTwoShoes I can say that having 4c hair is generally harder than the other hair types and this is coming from someone who hasn't relaxed their hair in over 10 years. I am grateful to have hair and I see my hair as a crown but maintaining afro-textured can be challenging. I've only started growing it out the beginning of this year after keeping it cropped short for over 4 years. Now my hair is still at a manageable length but I know it's going to be more of a pain as it gets thicker and longer and thicker. That being said, my hair is long enough for braids now so I'm keeping the style for the time being.

@@aprilsummers6447 I have type 4 hair and my hair is easy to deal with. There’s a saying that, whatever you believe to be true is true…so if you believe type 4 is hard to deal with it will be.

@@MsGoodyTwoShoes I did say harder relative to other hair types... Also yes I agree that we need to change the idea that kinky hair is unprofessional. I often go out in my mini afro but I am just one person. I hope in time I could see more afros and locs.

I would love to relax my hair but I’m afraid. I don’t wear wigs or anything else just my natural hair. If anyone wants to relax than it’s their decision they shouldn’t be attacked. Maintaining and managing natural hair is a struggle for some so let everyone do what makes them happy.

Yes! Make the decision based on what will make you happy at the end of the day. Consider the pros and cons. Always ask yourself why you went natural in the first place
