I had this done today by my physical therapist. I destroyed my calves from a long/hilly run. I haven't ran in five days and followed R.I.C.E to cure it. I'm losing training time so my PT dry needle four on each calf. Super twitch responses.. made me sweat. Like a rush of a cold sweat. 3 hour later it's unreal how there is less calf pain! I literally was at a limp this morning and now it's just sore from needles. Totally recomend it to my runner friends!!

I had to giggle watching Kirk "laugh" at the end as he was being dry needled. It is one of those things that can make you laugh or cry sometimes because it hurts so dang bad when it hits a tight, contracted spot. I've had my calves, It bands, glutes and TFLs dry needled (all before I knew about TRE). I swear it helped me run the marathon I was training for. I was an injured mess, and it (combined with scraping) helped me make it to the start line and the finish line. But I would advise doing all you can to not get so screwed up in the first place! Kudos to all the mobility work, foam rolling and all the good stuff you guys prescribe!!

YES!!! I love the reaction on your face. I hate dry needling. I did me second session today. I had the same look on my face if not worse. It made my wife's day so much better laughing at me.

I've had it done .. my calf was giving me soooo much grief and since the procedure it's been fantastic!!

I had this done weekly or bi-weekly by a reputable PT for a period of 1-2 months (I have chronically tight calves, I run and play sports). First of all it is INCREDIBLY uncomfortable. I do not mind needles normally/would say I'm not a wimp when it comes to pain but this procedure would regularly bring me to tears. Secondly, I cannot imagine your entire calf being done in one sitting.. that is a LOT of trigger points to cover, I think the pain alone would stop most people. Plus #3, for several days after the procedure, it feels like someone inserted a ball bearing into your calf. Again, if someone did your entire calf, I would imagine it'd be difficult to walk the next day, let alone run. Just my two cents.

I have had dry needling done twice, both for at least 3 weekly sessions. It hurt a good deal while being needled and afterwards as my PT massaged the sore points. However, it enabled me to resume running fairly quickly. In fact after two sessions, I was able to run that same evening. What I need are strengthening exercises to avoid needing it again after a few months. Looking forward to trying your 3 way to prevent lower leg injuries.

I had 4 put into my calves followed by electric stem through the four needles. It was crazy painful but hopefully it pays off

Nice demonstration. I always tell my patients that this is the part of the treatment that they will sadly take home with them, but but tomorrow it will feel very different.

I did not notice any cleaning of the skin before inserting the dry needle. What are the recommendations for this? If it is not recommended what is the science and research behind that?

I had this done for long-term calf cramping issues that had defied all other types of treatments. The 'pain' was not from the needle, but from the muscle contracting as in a cramp. When the muscle released the pain stopped. I was sore afterwards but no more than after a very challenging run.. If it is recommended, give it a go...your body will thank you later.

I’ve got a really bad trigger point in my upper gastrocnemius that’s been tight for about 2.5 months now. I can’t get it out no matter how hard I roll it with a firm roller or hard ball. Do runners typically need several dry needling sessions to release a finicky trigger point or will just one session usually do it?

Thanks for the informative video. I have had two sessions of dry needling thus far. Booked for 3 more. One day a week. I’m 2 weeks in and I can say I absolutely hate the women that does this too me. 😂. But I have not been able to run for 7 years due to immense calf cramping 2 min into any run. So one small run would cause 3 days of pain. Thought my running hobby went from 30 km races to couch. Now after 2 treatments I’m pushing at 2 days back to back with beast mode back after 7 years. 8 km steep trail run and 6 km flat gravel back too back. Have to say that this treatment seriously saved my trail life I thought was lost forever. Btw I’m 46 and running was my fix. Can’t thank my very hated lady that treats me. No pain no gain. I would say treatments are uncomfortable but not painful. Cheers y’all.

Hi! I currently have a few trigger points/knots in both of my calf’s and have been dealing with them for over a year now using home treatment like heat and rolling and stretching but haven’t been able to get rid of them I was thinking about getting dry needling done after watching this video but I wasn’t able to find any one who practiced in the state of Pennsylvania only acupuncturist, would that work too? Where are you located at?

Hello. Thanks for the info. I usually run in a stability shoe, but last year I hiked 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Altra trail shoes that have zero drop. I LOVED them and never had one problem, no blisters, no sore feet, and certainly no Achilles pain. SO this year when I took up running again I got a zero drop Altra road running shoe and although I love everything about them, wider toe box, how they naturally help me to have a more forward stride and strike, I have developed some really tight achilles pain in my right foot but not my left. Any suggestions? I really don't want to go back to my old shoes (Asics gel Kayanu) but I will totally incorporate the stretches you demonstrated.

I've had this done a few times. I highly recommend. To those of you who are considering this but are wary of any pain from it, don't let that put you off. It's not pain. True it's not exactly without feeling, you'll be able to have this done and continue conversation without problem. Depending on how much tension is built up in the area what you'll feel is more of a nervous twitch or many many twitches. Mostly if feels like more of a weird tickle. You'll get the odd sharp twitch which is uncomfortable but it's only a microsecond and doesn't sustain. This will help assist blood flow and you'll have no issues. It's a great treatment to get.

@Ligerpride

@@sr.cosmos4543 for me? Not at all. The only thing is maybe the muscles are a bit tender for a day or so. Basically I wouldn't run for the rest of the day after getting it done but the next day should be fine.

Is the skin sterilized before the puncture? I thought I saw multiple punctures with the same needle, is that correct? Or are you working the tissue trough one hole? At slightly different angles each time?.
@smwnl9072
@smwnl9072 7 лет назад
I don't think it was multiple punctures. Looks more of a single puncture, then pump/in-out action.

I'm a pt student. I did take the dry needling course. The PT inject the needle at one entery point at the skin, then pokes around with small changes in the angle. The leader of my dry needling course have been doing dry needling for 15 years, and said I can use the same needle for multiple injections as long as it dont touch anything beside the first injection. The small amounts of bacteria on the skin is not much of a worry, and will rearly cause an infection even without sterilizing the skin. If the patient is somewhat "dirty" I would sterilize the skin. For other PT-students who wonder about the physiology and reasoning behind dry needling: It's commonly used for patients with increased activity in the noceceptic receptors due to perifer sensitivisation which can result in muscle pain. This can be caused by as the PT in the video said: small parts of your muscles bundling up, which gives a small disfunction to the muscle and causes increased activity in the noceceptic receptors. The needle poking around at the bundled sarkoms (parts of muscle fibers), should in theory cause a small trauma -> leads to a physiological respons to heal the "damaged" muscle.

You my friend, are practicing Acupuncture without a license! Please don’t explain what acupuncture is when you are uneducated on the topic. Yes meridian is ONE aspect of acupuncture that effect “Qi” which is biological connectivity in your body. What your muscles, nerves, brain and organs run off of. All acupuncture point are basic on anatomical structure. This is science not magic. Further more “ASHI” point are trigger points, these are areas with pain on palpitation or tense muscles. What you do overlaps almost exactly with what acupuncture IS! If your helping people more power to you, but there is a lot your lacking to use those acupuncture needle to maximum effectiveness for your patients . Did you realize your using acupuncture needles ? Did you also know depending on what state you live Hypodermic needles are required use for dry needling by state law. Licensed acupuncturist are the only ones that have “filiform” needles mentioned in there legislation. Have a wonderful day
