It was more so that he was still in “I might be in danger” mode and was using his ability to camouflage himself for safety, which is a well known and observed behavior of octopus - and then when he realized he wasn’t in any danger he reverted back to a normal color.
i remember reading an interview with a guy that had an octopus in an aquarium. he recounted a story of him feeding his octopus with some shrimp one day (dead shrimp of course) and sitting down to read. after a few minutes something plopped on the table. turned out to be a slightly spoiled shrimp. when he looked over the octopus was making its way back to its aquarium to eat. a few things to take note of. 1) the octopus clearly was able to escape any time but chose not to. most likely because food was being delivered to it and safety couldnt be higher. 2) it sorted through its pile of food and instantly located a less than good shrimp. 3) it broke out of its tank to litterally throw the spoiled food at its caretaker, clearly showing the emotion "spite" and the abstract thinking of knowing that the strange 2 legged one living outside water was feeding it. 4) the fact that it simply crawled back in its tank to munch away afterwards shows that the sole reason for it to leave the tank to begin with, was to spite the 2 legged one that dared bring it spoiled food. this is a level of intelligence usually only credited to humans. imagine if we could give them the chance to talk

Reminds me of a video I saw where a small octopus reached out a tentacle to touch an outstretched human index finger, like the creation image in the Sistine Chapel. Only once it made contact, the octopus pulled back, apparently sensing just how *big* a creature it was in the presence of.

So incredibly touching and beautiful. You could see how distressed he was, it took a few minutes for him to regain his strength. This--this shows animals are not "things" under man's domain. They are living, breathing caring sentient beings that form relationships.
You should watch the Movie "My Octopus Teacher" If you haven't already. It's actually a Documentary, at first I thought it would be boring but it's actually amazing.
Some scientists wrote a paper arguing that the octopus it's actually an alien species that came to earth in ice meteors. Those things have double the genes of humans, three hearts and EIGHT brains and don't seem related to any other species on Earth.

@@NautsuJJR Which is "life coming back to him" because when an octopus is on the verge of suffocating it can't really camouflage (I think it's related to lack of oxygen in the brain causing it to lose the ability), it regaining that ability is literally part of the process of it recovering.

in a way, yes. the fact he didn't touch skin didn't give him a lot to go on. they're really intelligent, far more intelligent than we are in many ways, but I don't think he understood the chemical or biological makeup of "shoes." Had he touched his bare foot, he could've bonded with him and read him better.

Just look at your pet (dog/cat): they can have joy, they can be annoyed, miserable, frustrated, frightened and even thankful, and communicate this quite clearly.
Yes it did thank you. I know of another person who had the same experience. She worked at the Monterey Bay aquarium and was releasing an octopus in the bay that they had held captive for several years. As she released it, it came over to her and put one tentacle on her arm and looked straight at her for a long moment before swimming off.
