Is the ryobi 40 Volt electric lawn mower the best electric lawn mower ever? That's a good question.
In this short review of the Ryobi 40 Volt lawn mower We cut our first lawn of the year and tell you how reliable the ryobi 40 Volt electric lawn mower really is.
If you've watched our previous videos about the Ryobi 40 Volt electric lawn mower, you know we don't treat it particularly well. It's a tool and we treat it like a tool. We've mulched up tree branches and crunched a trillion dry pine cones.
Like all tools, some technologies are better suited for some jobs than others. If you have deep grass and don't mow your lawn frequently, then an electric lawn mower is not a good choice forr you. If you have to mow two acres of land, an electric Lawn mower isn't the best choice. However, if you're an urban dweller, an electric lawn mower will far surpass 90% of use cases.
Even in the suburbs or with large lots like mine (which is about 20% of an acre) an electric lawn mower with a 40 volt battery and a 20 inch cutting surface is a far superior choice to gas mowers. This electric Ryobi lawn mower is
- lighter than my previous gas mowers,
- never fails to start
- Will likely never need service (spark plugs changed, oil changed, gas drained at the end of the year)
- and because I have a second battery for other Ryobi tools, it's virtually impossible that I will ever run out of power.
While it's certainly far too broad a statement to say that electric lawn mowers are better than gas mowers in all situations if you have to make a generalization, it would be that electric lawn mowers like this Ryobi 40V 20 inch are wildly better than gas mowers.
In year six, we show you how the battery is held up and what the problems are with the ryobi 40 Volt electric lawn mower.

Just purchased the Ryobi 401180 40V self propelled from HD. It's going to be used basically as a trimming mower in the few places I would rather not run my tractor through due to the slope. The 40V HD system is a step above from the standard 40V system. As a test I mowed 12,000 Sq ft basically level in 45 minutes. The battery died bringing it back to the garage. That is exceptional performance and the battery will get a bit better as it gets used and conditioned. Cut quality is very good with very few stragglers. Of course the blade is brand new. For those that are older or do a lot of trimming mowing the light weight and maneuverability of this mower is a big advantage. Love the composite deck as it appears to be very strong. No rust either, which is a big bonus. This mower is replacing a 21 year old Lawnboy two stroker that was built like a tank but heavy. The Ryobi has big shoes to fill, but at first glance I think it will do just fine. Does anyone know if it is safe to wash the underside of the deck from time to time. This is my first electric mower and generally electric and water is a bad combo. To the poster that says all electric mowers suck, well all I can say is with an attitude like that one most likely will have a rough life of their own choosing.

all electric lawn mowers suck. I tried one and ended up trashing it and getting my old BlackMAX back out to mow the yard.

I can't imagine why you would say that all electric lawn mowers suck. Clearly you haven't tried them all. I can definitively say that my Ryobi electric lawn mower doesn't suck. Perhaps you made the mistake of buying a small voltage battery or a tiny mowing deck of say 14 inches. If you live on a tiny lot, that specification may work but it certainly wouldn't work for me. Even in the suburbs or with large lots like mine (which is about 20% of an acre) an electric lawn mower with a 40 volt battery and a 20 inch cutting surface is a far superior choice to gas mowers. This electric Ryobi lawn mower is - lighter than my previous gas mowers, - never fails to start - Will likely never need service (spark plugs changed, oil changed, gas drained at the end of the year) - and because I have a second battery for other Ryobi tools, it's virtually impossible that I will ever run out of power. While it's certainly far too broad a statement to say that electric lawn mowers are better than gas mowers in all situations if you have to make a generalization, it would be that electric lawn mowers like this Ryobi 40V 20 inch are wildly better than gas mowers.
