Two lone Texas Madrone trees stand as memoirs of a cooler, wetter time deep in the West Texas Desert.
Other species featured here are Salvia greggii, Yucca thompsoniana, Escobaria hesteri, Cercocarpus breviflorus, and more.
Your contributions support this content. It sounds cliché but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...
Or consider becoming a patreon supporter @ :

Buy some CPBBD merch (shirts, hats, hoodies n' what the shit) available for sale at :
www.bonfire.co...
To purchase stickers, venmo 15 bucks to "societyishell" and leave your address in the comments.
Plants ID questions or reading list suggestions can be sent to crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com

We are so digging this...thanks! We grew up as free-range kids, roaming Texas as youngster's. From Amarillo to Langtry,Abilene to El Paso was our range. We examined every kind of rock,plant,critter,soil,etc...but didn't have resources to quickly indentify anything other than stone artifacts. Thanks for sharing real knowledge👍

Ages ago I hiked up to the highest spot on Point Reyes, and on the way back down, there was this massive madrone on the side of the trail. It's bark looked like human skin. I cried.

I lived I El Paso in the early 80’s and my favorite madrones were along the Pinery Trail in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. There were also big tooth maples that were like bonfires of red in the fall. I tried for years to grow both those trees here in Tucson but the heat and dry was too much for them. There were also some great madrones by the Jeff Davis courthouse in Fort Davis. I killed my lawn in El Paso in 1983 and planted wildflowers. My neighbor reported me to the city. He was afraid my sunflowers would take over his lawn. I hoped they would.

I lived in Alpine TX for 25 years and roamed all over that area. Looks like you are along the Longfellow Rd, sorta between Marathon and Sanderson. If you have not yet travelled down Longfellow, I highly recommend this road that has almost no traffic, and is 70-ish mi long. Another great area to check out is the scenic loop just north of Ft Davis. A drive through the Davis Mountain sky island ecosystem ( really nice, fairly widespread population of Madrones in the Davis Mts.). Nice to see the old stompin grounds again. Thanks. Did you have to "know somebody" to access the glass Mts?

I happen to be moving to the exteme SE corner of New Mexico, which feels like a huge departure from western Oregon. I'm a little worried about the big change. But coincidentally Tony seems to be covering places very close by, and it's all very beautiful, so it's bringing me a lot of comfort.

Lots of beautiful plants and trees that grow naturally there in the west Texas desert! The sandstone referenced here is interbedded with shales and siltstones. As it was tilted upwards of 90 degrees over 300 million years erosion made some interesting pockets of outcroppings if you pass by on US-90 headed west or on US -385 north to Marathon,TX They are in a northeast to southwest direction.

I live up in the PNW in Portland and someone must have planted a bunch of Madrones trees in my neighborhood a long time ago. I got two just across the street from me. They have really pretty red bark. I wish they came with the butterflies :( Our butterfly population still seems to be struggling but I think its bouncing back slowly...

I collected some fruit from a Euonymus atropurpureus. I teach, and I am going to run a little project to see what sort of germination rate we have with the seniors. The plant isn't often seen in cultivation, but I am hoping to give the plants to my friend who works at the Olmsted Parks Conservancy here in Buffalo. It would be nice to see this plant used in place of E. alatus.

My Pacific madrone that I planted is just finishing its 2nd summer in my urban lot in Portland, I'm really hoping it makes it. They're drought tolerant but they don't seem to like either 100+ weather or super cold weather. Do you know how old they have to be to flower? Wow, those Texas ones are stunning, so beautiful 😍!

I'm still in the process of restoring my local ecosystem in Ohio. Don't have a very good seed resource, so I have to buy & cart in a lot of plants. You really have no idea what kinds of stuff you'll come across. They took out a dam in the city recently, causing the river level to drop down to the point where you can kind of just wade right across it & tons of revived seeds immediately took. I found a couple frigging Navajo Spinach. Those should only be in a Plains region. We're in a big Swamp in a north facing culdesac scooped out of the edge of the Appalachia Plateau that dead ends at Lake Erie, yet I'm seeing Navajo Spinach growing here.

I'm curious if there are any night blooming catai in West Texas? They would make for gorgeous Milky Way astrophotography shots in the foreground. We're from the Houston area but we want to retire somewhere west. Either west Texas, New Mexico or maybe Utah. That is my dream anyway. Retirement with my sweetheart and telescopes and cameras. I loved the desert before I ever even went to one. The fam and I spent five days in Terlingua in 2020. Some of the darkest, clearest night skies in the country. The flora and fauna were the icing on the cake. I even hunted for meteorites. Thanks for the wonderful content!

Madrones don't like wet feet, but to remedy that by grafting onto Arbutus unedo, which would probably sucker badly, but if one wanted to get vigor into the Madrone to make a good crop of berries, I think it might work well. There's a little colony of at least 3 up in a spot along the road up in the Chiricahuas, but the monsoon sucked this year, and even with some pretty heavy winter rain, no berries. Maybe I'll try the graft coming winter, fuck off!

Arbutus arizonica is what I'm seeing instead of this species, and so far, it's quite rare, but I need to go collect Arizona Walnuts, having one I started, and was 9 inches last year, putting on 4 feet and a half inch,. There's a couple limbs, which I try making hardwood cuttings from, as I've read it's been done. Maybe if I keep my eyes peeled, I'll find another Madrone.
