11 years later and this video is still helping people. My brother lives about 4 hours away, I tried explaining the concept to him while he was having issues with his burner, but he still didn’t get it so I sent him this and he was able to get a much better understanding than I could give. Thanks for taking the time to make this over a decade ago

Thank you!!! I am having pressure problems, plus my DHW in-direct tank is leaking, loosing /wasting my hot water. I narrowed it to a leaky tank. Systems are complicated due to the variables. I think there is more to my problem. Will check out. Very helpful !!!

Thanks for the tip about increased pressure only a high temp, meaning the expansion tank is bad...Big help in determining the problem...

Hi there, thanks for the tips about how this things work, I just bought my house and it has a oil furnace, but it just stared to release lots of hot steam with a little water, its more steam at high pressure, with just a little water, the water pressure gage reach 30psi super quick, right after the release valve opens, I don’t get why it just hot steam comes out but no much water, this furnace it’s used just to heat the house, no water leaks anywhere in the house. any ideas are welcome, thanks

If the hotwater coil in the boiler had a pinhole, wouldn't there be signs of leakage on the outside of the boiler? My Furnace is reaching around 30lbs of pressure and the pressure relief valve seeps water. No signs of leaking water from a coil. Maybe I should try the pressure reducing valve and pressure relief valve replacement first?? Any suggestions? ( Really great video, by the way! )

Nice video. So if a leak in the hot water coil is the source of pressure then pressure should remain high even when the boiler is off. Is that right. Is that how you would diagnose the problem?

Does the releaf valve go bad? I didn't see that in their.

Hi. Water started dripping quite a bit from the pressure relief valve (30psi) so I replaced it. Still dripping the same. Also if I barely puff on the lever on tge relief valve, water rushes out. That tells me pressure is too high. Toughts?

Great video. I'm wondering about the temperature part of it. Let's say that you opened all the windows in your house on a cold day, would that alone set the relief valve going? (I'm speaking theoretically here) In other words, lets say you had an inadequate amount of baseboard but selected a high temperature on the thermostat and all your components including your boiler were working normally, would that set the relief valve going?

I have a Peerless Boiler, my relief valve was and is still leaking. I replaced the expansion tank and the relief valve, I set the pressure on the tank to 30lbs, should I have the air pressure at 12lbs? Please help asap

I found this very helpful while trouble shooting why the relief valve will start leaking. One scenario not mentioned is if the rubber? valve seat on the pressure relief valve itself starts to leak from age (dry rot, etc.). I assume this could happen... right?

Great video. Very informative. Really helped me troubleshoot my system. Narrowed it down to the coil!
@larrycurrier290

I've never seen a coil in an indirect hot water heater that heats the water in the coil. maybe an old sidearm off of a steam boiler but not a hot water storage tank. and the fact you stated about expansion tank needing to be on one side of the other of the circulator is absolutely wrong there is no pressure variable between the two sides of a circulator it's all 12 pounds on the norm. more systems than not do not pump water out of a boiler it is actually pump into the boiler and drawing from your heating Loop that's creating basically a siphon effect. water at 12 pounds of pressure does not boil until it gets to about 235 degrees. and folks there's a difference between a domestic expansion tank then a hydronic heating expansion tank. you can use a potable water expansion tank on a boiler if you set the pressure correctly but you cannot use one design for hydronic heating on domestic water.
