I'm a clinical licensed counselor, as well as a fan of Marlene Winell. Her system is the BEST system I've seen for trauma.

No child should be traumatized with religious and political ideologies. It's child abuse.

My heart just broke when he mentioned the part about his friend for 27 years who just stopped talking to him because of some sky daddy and his bible.

I went through this alone. It took over 20 years. Think I’ll read her book.

I can't believe I can't just shake this off! Like it has been stitched into my psyche at about age 5 or 6

I have toyed with the idea of being an athiest but in my heart of hearts I do believe there is a God. I have pondered on this idea for years but I always come back to the same conclusion. I am not sure if he is as concerned with me being this ultra good person. I think thats where the control part of religion starts to take over and get people to comply and conform.

@VapidZero: I had the same experience when I became atheist. A friend I would spend hours on end talking to on the phone would not pick any of my calls or answer any of my messages. I remember going out of my way to help her out with stuff and trying to help her out when she was in a fix. It was hard since we were really close but it made it clear that if I was no longer going to church that I was not to be her friend. 5 years of friendship just ended like that :( I was just ignored

sakamuk When I left the mormon church, the entire neighborhood did that to me - their kids were told to stay away from my kids because they weren't "worthy." I realized that I had done the same thing to other people who left the church.

I don't have kids yet but I would hate to have my kids go through that. Maybe you can look for a Sunday Assembly group or something so that your kids have someone to play with. I hope you and your kids are fine

6:31 Reminds me of my aunt, who spent her senior year in high school trying to disprove the Pythagorean Theorem (canned roomfull of laughter)

The fundamentalist evangelical religion was bad enough, the regular beatings and other physical and emotional abuse that went with it have turned my life into a living hell. I'm going to be 50 this year, and it took me until I was about 45 to get over my fear of hell and realize that I never believed in the religion that was pounded into me. I have so many problems with trust, fear (and anger) over manipulation, as well as physical and emotional problems stemming from the constant childhood abuse, I sometimes feel like killing myself just to make it stop.

I am infinitely interested in any cognitive neuroscience involved in helping to prove this disorder exists. As a gnostic atheist who was set on becoming a minister, I live with this disorder and definitely have exhibited the same symptoms as CPTSD.

"There were no satanists there, they didn't kill anybody or anything like that." SO RELEVANT.

A friend for 27 years, just plain refuses to talk, just because he is now an atheist. What a sad world we have.

You need to understand deconstruction. It's a really hard thing becoming an athiest. Relating to theist becomes hard. Especially if trauma is involved.

I am trying to find a rational position where I still believe in God, but eschew the religious dogma

+Khadijah Brown I'm kind of in the same situation. However, just the thought of God triggers a bunch of programmed fears, all the indoctrination is inextricably connected with the idea of God. It's like I'm trying to create a God of my own, which goes against what I was told in my ex fundamentalist christian church, were I was told that there is only one God. I struggle with that, a lot.

Rodrigo Ramirez Not that I would recommend my path, I go to a Mormon Church because I like the people, but have little respect for their leaders. I still believe much of what I learned in Islam, but not the radicalism and misogyny. I think that "The Foundation Trilogy" provides valuable insight into the nature of God. I think there is one God but men try to put it/him into a little box. God is oh so much more than we can grasp.

Rodrigo Ramirez I just finished reading a very fun, happy Science Fiction story at bigclosetr.us/topshelf/book/37845/book-1-stranger-palarand It provides some fruit for thought about the whole God issue.

***** Please let Jesus' own words guide you. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and body. Love your neighbor as yourself. We have no right to condemn another because such judgement is for God only.

Yes! This is what people need to be doing. It's clear to me there is a causal Agent for the universe and all that's in it. The only consistent explanation of exactly what/who this causal agent is is found in the Hebrew Scriptures, something that is wonderfully elucidated by Dr. Hugh Ross of Reasons to Believe. A consistent interpretation of the teachings of the Bible as a whole lead me, and many others, to something entirely different than what Christianity is today...and that is the beautiful message of freedom that God has for us, if only we are willing to accept it. We are not gods who can determine all right and wrong for ourselves, or pull ourselves up by our own "good works", and we are also not meant to live in fear of the Tyrant God that so many Christian doctrines teach, we are meant to live as God intended, despite the fact that we are fallible creatures...FREE, with life overflowing!

@VapidZero Yeah, when he said that, and ESP. when he chucked up afterward, that's when the full gravity of it rly started to sink in for me. I got out of religion when I grew out of santa and the tooth fairy, so IDK what it's like to come out of it when you're in your *'30's*! (Not to mention I'm only 22...lol)
