The 2002 German Grand Prix (officially the 2002 German Grand Prix 1) took place on 28 July at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim and was the twelfth race of the 2002 Formula One World Championship.
At the beginning, Frentzen remained on the starting grid. His car was pushed into the pits, from where it was restarted two laps behind the group. In the top places, Michael Schumacher maintained first place, while Raikkonen passed Montoya and Trulli moved up to sixth. At the front of the race, Michael Schumacher gradually extended his lead over his brother, while Montoya challenged Raikkonen for fifth place and overtook the Finnish driver on lap eleven. One lap later, Trulli, who was in a crisis due to unusual tyre wear, had to give up sixth place to Coulthard and was overtaken by other drivers in the following laps.
Michael Schumacher also had increasing problems with the tyres and gradually lost his lead over his brother, who drove the fastest race lap several times in the race. However, until the first series of pit stops, which Barrichello opened on lap 26 among the leading drivers, there were none notable events. The Brazilian was followed one lap later by his teammate, who was now a few tenths behind Ralf Schumacher. The Williams driver refuelled on lap 29 after setting the fastest lap again, but missed the opportunity to overtake his brother after being slowed down in the lane into the pits by Jacques Villeneuve, who retired due to a gearbox problem. One lap later, Montoya also made his stop and returned to the track behind the Schumacher brothers and Barrichello and ahead of Raikkonen (who chose not to change his tyres during the pit stop), Coulthard and Olivier Panis.
The situation remained stable until lap 37, when Raikkonen suffered a puncture on the left rear tyre and had to return to the pits, falling backwards. Panis finished in the points, but retired just two laps later due to an engine failure on his BAR. On lap 46, Barrichello made the second pit stop, but there was a problem with the fuel door on the Brazilian driver's car, which did not open immediately, causing him to lose about twenty seconds and third place to Montoya. The second series of pit stops did not bring any further changes at the top, Michael Schumacher continued to lead ahead of Ralf Schumacher, Montoya, Barrichello, Coulthard and Heidfeld. On lap 63, however, Ralf Schumacher had to return to the pits to fill the pneumatic valve system with air and thus lost second place to his teammate.
Michael Schumacher won the race, followed by Montoya in second and Ralf Schumacher in third. The remaining points finishes were occupied by Barrichello, Coulthard and Heidfeld.
Both Arrows cars retired from the race with mechanical problems at the last Grand Prix in the team's history. Financial difficulties caused the team to miss the rest of the season before going into liquidation at the end of the year. Bernoldi would never contest a Formula 1 Grand Prix again, Frentzen was to become a regular driver at Sauber in 2003.
