Reloading Bench: Simple DIY quick swap press mount

A quick look at how I set up my reloading bench so I can easily swap presses without tools. Not much more than a piece of plywood and some carriage bolts to produce a very sturdy mount.
More details are available at the website
www.ammochannel...
The workbench is framed from 2x4's and the surface is partical board from an old piece of furniture. Partical board isn't particularly good for mounting fasteners into so I scrounged up a small piece of 1-1/8" thick plywood and bolted it down, throught the surface and into the 2x4 frame underneath. This thick piece of plywood has four strategically placed carriage bolts protruding up through it for me two presses to mount on using nothing more than wing nuts - finger tightened. Each press utilizes 3 of the 4 bolts. I have found it works remarkably well and cost almost nothing to make.

I Just bought me a lyman expert reloading kit off Craigslist with the same spar-t press you have. The kit is new never been used. The kit still had the original receipt inside from 1979.

Nice tidy set up & lay out, the third bolt on the back of the RCBS is a good idea to make it really rigid, thanks for posting.

You have a sweet setup, hopefully we'll get to see the rest of the garage. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the tips! I've been looking for a way to arrange my presses on my bench.

I like that I was not the only one that was thinking of modding the press handle.

Wow, what an enthusiast. I would love to be like you, shooting, testing, reloading, having a lot of fun doing it, but the law here in Serbia is very strict concerning firearms and ammunition. Great video, keep it up.
@iamtheomega
@iamtheomega 9 лет назад
I just read that Serbia is #2 (!) after the USA, for firearms ownership rate, I think you're at 58%....but I'll bet your laws are like Europe's, especially after Bill Clinton's war, and the subsequent UN intervention...
@lakiza55
@lakiza55 9 лет назад
Well, not really, most European countries allow firearm and ammunition possession, shooting on ranges and ranches. Getting a firearm here, you have to go through many many stages, especially for small arms. My dad owns a CZ(Crvena Zastava) 99, a 9mm pistol for which he paid around 500 euros, he is paying like a 50 euros each year to keep his licence. Plus the ammo price is skyhigh(almost 1 dollar - 1 9mm), you cant reload and you are limited to 60 rounds a year.
@lakiza55
@lakiza55 9 лет назад
The only thing i reloaded is 12g, which is the only ammo you can reload and have unlimited amount of. And you cannot have a pump action nor a semi auto, only double barrel, vertical double barrel, or a single barrel breech load.

I did likewise with 2 narrow plywood slabs and press bolted through them, total probably 1.5 in. thick and clamp it to the table, then can remove when done and no holes through my table.

2:08 "It's really rugged". The tiny amount of pressure you were putting on it was making it rock back and forth. I hate my press flexing; how much movement does it have when you're working the press?

I like it. Good idea and easy for clean up.

I like the idea of the bolt in the back. The press does seem to tilt when you use it, which is a bit annoying.

I think you could actually mount both presses side by side. In fact, I have the same two presses mounted to my bench right now. :D Got a new Lyman 8 turret press in between them as well.

Nice set up I was lucky had enough room to mount four presses and still have room. Seems everybody has the RCBS rock chucker if they don't they should great press.

swatnc Agreed. My old bench had 3 presses and a bullet sizer all setup but it was too cramped in the space I had to work with.
@overheardatthepub1238
@overheardatthepub1238 9 лет назад
Why not side mount both? You've got room to permanently mount both of the presses so you never have to switch them out....
@Ammochannel

Will Sullivan I used to have multiple presses mounted but found I prefer not to tie up the bench space. It makes me feel better to have a nice open clean bench.

I was wondering how to cut .578 x 28 insidethreads because I cant find thread cutting tools for that and most gearboxes of lathe turning machines over here make doing that impossible

Hi, what's the size of the carriage bolt and wing nut? The manual says to use 3/8 bolt. Cheers

Awesome information and video, other than the rock chucker what is that other multi-dye single stage you have set up?
@Ammochannel
@Ammochannel 9 лет назад
TheBamidd It is an old Lyman Spar-T turret press. Picked it up at a gun show awhile back.

For casting bullets just for informal plinking what are your thoughts on using recycled battery lead? Years ago I started melting battery lead into ingots, have not used them but if they are supposed to be so corrosive why have the ingots not corroded while in storage?
@sjeverett75
@sjeverett75 6 лет назад
battery lead is not a good idea. Heating battery lead can produce fumes that could kill you. really not worth it.

i like that lyman spar t press. does lyman make a comparative press today or if yours were to break and you replaced it with another. what would you replace it with.

Dale Myers That's a good question, I have no idea what turret press I would choose. I like RCBS products though because they have always provided me great customer service. I started out with Lee's smallest reloading press (used) and then upgraded to a RCBS Jr. press (used) - super rugged but pretty compact too. This paved the way to the Rockchucker which my wife got me for Christmas one year. I picked up a Lee 4-hole turret (used) and it just didn't do it for me, eventually I stumbled across this Lyman Spar-T turret which I really like because it seems super rugged and holds 6 dies. I reckon if I were shopping for a new turret I would investigate RCBS products first, just because I am partial to them.

glockman1727ak47 I have found that I prefer lots of open space around my work area. Seems to work best for me. The hard part is forcing myself to clean up after completing a project and before starting another otherwise things get out of control... fast.
