Mega Transport of a giant antenna in chile. The Chilean Atacama Desert is home to the world’s largest radio telescope: “Atacama Large Millimeter Array Observatory”, also known as “ALMA”. At an altitude of 5,000 meters above sea level, astronomers find perfect conditions for observing the universe: almost no pollution, no artificial lights and very thin air. The most powerful telescope in the world can see an incredible ten billion light years. To the edge of the observable universe. Good for the scientists, bad for the engineers: working conditions are extreme on Chajnator Plateau, where the 66 antennas are located: low oxygen levels, fluctuating temperatures from 20 degrees Celsius above zero to 20 degrees Celsius below zero - and strong wind. Every time the telescope sets its sights on a new target, 50 of the extremely sensitive and valuable antennas have to be moved. A major effort! And a battle against the weather, a lack of oxygen and a race against time - with a schedule set by the stars. To adjust the world’s largest telescope array, you need high-tech equipment! “Made in Germany”! Or more precisely: Two transport machines unlike any other machines in the world. Their names are “Otto” and “Lore”. They have been specifically designed for the job. Both
vehicles are twenty meters long. Ten meters wide. And six meters tall. Two 680-horsepower diesel engines drive these 135-ton monsters. Despite their size, they can perform millimeter-precision work, even with a one hundred-ton-antenna on top. Our hero Alfredo and his team have to complete the relocation of one antenna in an 8-hour-time-frame. If they stayed longer on the Plateau, health issues could arise very quickly. But the weather has its own plans, and a blackout forces the crew to change their mission…

@@OmmerSyssel Nice try. I do not consider feminists fanatics. In fact, it was the suffrage movement in the first half of last century that pushed for and gained such basic human rights as the right to vote, divorce and to be in control of their own destinies. They were also called "fanatics" by bigots in their time. The type of fear mongering you're doing here through name-calling is exactly what is driving the country apart. I was raised by a strong, caring and independent woman. I very much appreciate that. If I should ever have a daughter myself, I will make sure she cowers for no one. If it's a son, I'll make sure he stands up for himself and the dignity of others.

I also started sending fun postcards to family and friends who live close but I’m not able to see as often as I’d like. It’s nice. Just an idea. As always, stay safe, stay healthy. Tomorrow we’ve got docs coming up about mega dams&canals, jackals of the Serengeti and Amazon. Don’t worry - not a mashup - three new docs and they’re pretty awesome.

Really like these documentaries. But the hypoxia thing is way overstated. 5000 meters is not in the death zone. Both Everest base camps are above 5k meters and they don't use oxygen in base camp.
@danjones1608
@danjones1608 3 года назад
It's still a bad idea to operate heavy machinery at that altitude without acclimatizing unless you have O2. I went to Everest base camp, the trek starts at about the same altitude as this guy's drive, but we took most of a week to get there. I did fine with the altitude, but when we drove up Mauna Kea a few years later, the altitude hit me hard.

I am wondering why the transporter had to be reset two times. One would think that resetting the transporter would be the first thing to do in attempting to troubleshoot the second problem. It was the problem with the first failure to supply power to the first telescope. Logic would dictate that because a working telescope was transported to the new location and during the final positioning maneuvers the system shut down; it seems reasonable to simply reboot the transporter first before checking other possibilities. The power cable probably has a loose ground allowing RF to produce noise to the system control microprocessors triggering a fault shutdown. IMHO

@betel75
@betel75 4 года назад
That difference is minimal. Anyway, there are 10 different array configurations of the antennas, from the most compact, where all antennas are located within less than 200 meters, to the largest, spanning 16 km. The antenna pads are distributed over patterns of approximately spiral shape. Using tracks was dismissed during the preparation studies, also due to the possibility of earthquakes damaging the tracks.
