This place is now Sugar Mill Gardens, plantation ruins of an old sugar mill surrounded by 12 acres of flowering trees, holly magnolia, and other native flora. But from 1948 to 1952 it was Bongoland, a theme park with a miniature train, a replica Seminole village, and "prehistoric monsters" made by cement worker M.D. "Manny" Lawrence, out of concrete and chicken wire.
Four of the monsters survive and are now protected as relics of Florida's heritage. Their paint is long gone, their bodies are darkened with grime and mold and covered with moss and spider webs. The Triceratops, 25 feet long, isn't a bad reproduction, but the 42-foot-tall T-Rex was awful (It collapsed into rubble during a rainstorm in July 2019). Evidently more of these creatures were in the park, and one wonders what other marvels wrought by Manny have been lost forever.
Bongoland was owned by Perry Sperber, the first dermatologist in Daytona Beach. It was named for "Bongo," a large baboon that lived there. A sign next to the Stegosaurus notes that the park closed "for lack of public interest."
Hello and welcome to the World of Micah! I travel around filming everything and anything I find interesting -from theme parks to abandoned urban exploring. If you enjoy learning more about Disney history, tips & secrets or a fan of Walt Disney World nostalgia you have come to the right place. I also enjoy showing Universal Studios history and taking a look of what’s left of from classic attractions like JAWS and ‪Back to the Future‬. More of an Urban Exploring fan? I travel around Central Florida and film everything from abandoned Toys “R” Us stores to abandoned attractions. I'm also a major Movie Buff! I have found the filming locations from such films as Edward Scissorhands, Halloween (1978) & Hocus Pocus!

Another great video! I'm a born & raised Florida boy but have never heard of Bongoland. I grew up and live in Gainesville, about 45 minutes away from Silver Springs (Ocala, Fl) which has it's own history dating back from the 1940s. Also, Weechi Wachee Springs (Brooksville, Fl) opened in 1947 and still operating. I definitely recommend checking those two out...they played essential roles in early entertainment and filming in the 1900s.

I always really dig these deep cut, off the beaten path adventures. These cool little parts of Florida that most of us never get to see. All those cement dinosaurs from 70+ years ago, like moss covered gold. Very nice dude! Oh also…Bongoland.

I love these antiquated ruins of former attractions. What an interesting history this place has. I always love seeing images of the past as compared to the present. These prehistoric sculptures are amazing. I'm glad the Bongoland area is "preserved" in some fashion. very enjoyable, Micah ... ty👏🤠
