Smash has seen a whole lot of fighters across its history, with a variety of design ideas going into them. Guest fighters in particular often feel like they walked right out of their home series, with physics and mechanics designed to feel as close to their original gameplay as possible. However...it doesn't always happen that way.
Sometimes things don't go according to plan, and a certain blue hedgehog is proof of it--for various reasons, Sonic's gameplay in Smash has never quite clicked. His moveset, while inspired by his games (Sonic the Fighters especially), still feels like it misses its potential. And through various quirks and oversights, his optimal playstyle for a long time has been to run away from opponents and slow down matches in a way that feels completely out-of-character!
But what if we could do something about that? Let's remake Sonic's design as a Smash fighter, retooling and overhauling his moves and abilities to be truer to character, more fun to play as, and less infuriating to play against!

If you check Remix 64’s take on Sonic they gave him a unique stage entrance animation with Tails flying him in with the Tornado and his Down Air being ripped right from Yoshi which is ingenious and fits him like a glove too imo, he also has a sex kick too which is neat. His Stages are not just Green Hill but Casino Night and Metallic Madness to name a few.

Just as a little addition, I think that adding the ability to increase the boost meter through taunting would be a fun inclusion. Not only does it harken back to Generation's trick system, but it would encourage the player to taunt between stocks to keep the meter up, which adds to that narrative of Sonic being the ultimate cheeky bastard.

@@seabass64 while that’s true, I’d imagine you’d be stuck in the taunt(s) mid air so the opponent would have a good opportunity to punish assuming no i-frames are involved with midair taunts

Because the boost bar only being charged by landing hits would encourage Sonic Players to, you know, approach their foes instead of run away and throw the matches? The whole point of this remake it is to iron out Sonic's campy aspects to make play like an actual hit & run character and not a keep away character

A few things I would like to point out with regards to how Sonic is portrayed… - Some of his animations do need work since they saw a regression post-Brawl. More of Sonic’s expressiveness being brought back would be nice. - Due to Smash not being unionized, Roger Craig Smith wasn’t able to do unique voice lines (as well as a number of other issues regarding to the voice actors of various characters in English). Unionizing the next Smash game would allow for us to get more unique Sonic lines next time, including Roger’s take on “You’re too slow!” & potentially the deeper tone introduced in Frontiers. There’d also be the benefit of finally getting English Cloud & Sephiroth as well as Jennifer Hale recording new lines for Bayonetta. - I’m surprised you didn’t suggest the SOAP Shoes, especially given that Frontiers brought them back as an alt for Sonic.

This is near everything I wanted for a true Sonic moveset. I also like how you worked on making sure Sonic is now incentivised to fight since running away and slowing down the battle is the opposite of what Sonic would want to do in a fight. Two of my favourite changes were the air tricks and the Spin Dash fusion. I've never heard those ideas before but they feel so right.

As a Sonic fan, I can say that this was a perfect moveset for Sonic! -Boost as side special makes sense, but not broken cause it doesn’t deal damage -Combining his side and down specials AND the Drop Dash was a genius idea -Putting the Sonic Eagle on Back air was a really smart idea, makes it so much more balanced -Stomp was a great choice for down air -Wild Rush up special was unexpected but works really well -Super Phantom Rush balances his Final Smash perfectly (not OP like Brawl/SSB4, but not weak like Ultimate) -Love the addition of the Air Tricks 10/10, one of the best Sonic moveset I’ve seen. Makes his play style more in-character, but also keeps it balanced.

I'd say boost promotes running away a little too much since it doesn't do anything other than have him run away, boost having some knock back and possibly low dmg would promote it as a combo tool instead of just promoting the keep away play style but that's just imo

Despite being the billionth Sonic moveset remake, this one is underrated. The many I've seen gone HAM on the ideas but don't even mind about potential balancing issues or throwing out an entire play style for something more flash. The momentum based movement might be taxing for some, but if done well, it might be an okay new element.

Honestly i am shocked that sakurai has not taken the fan mod approach by adding a new character that takes the old moveset of a character and give the old character new moves, like Black Shadow from F-Zero with Ganons old moveset & Classic Sonic with Modern Sonic’s old moveset Edit:Also the costumes could just be outfits sonic has worn in his actual games like the Beat, Racing suit, Santa suit & Baseball uniform

I'm guessing because movesets and character are very intertwined with each other. It's like taking away an old, super useful special move in place of a new one and then slapping it on another character. Yeah it still works, but it just doesn't _feel_ the same...

Pretty sold. But I think forward and back air should swap. Sonic Eagle just fits in too well as a forward air. (It also contrasts with Mario's, which is something I want his moveset to do more of.)

It also makes sense because in SADV2, the spin kick had the ability to mostly instantly change your momentum from one direction to the other. It would make perfect sense for forward air to remain for Sonic Eagle and for back air to be a momentum-switching spin kick like how it acted in the game.

Personally, I think the opposite direction of the spike further emphasizes the contrast, kind of like DK & K. Rool’s forward and back airs.

Nice to see the Blue Blur get a retooled Moveset finally as he desperately needed one since his Smash debut! You did an excellent job of toning down Sonic's speed so whenever players are fighting against him, he isn't constantly exhausting them, and whenever players are fighting with him, they aren't constantly abusing him, while still capturing the spirit of his games, and still being the fastest fighter in Smash, and also not having him curl in a ball as often! I especially love how you incorporated the Boost mechanic while also trying to make sure it isn't too OP! I even love the idea of Sonic's knee Pummel being faster to bring out while also dealing less damage, and I actually thought of a way that it could be enhanced even further! Instead of a single knee strike, now he hits his caught opponents with both of his knees individually at a fast pace, or a quick double knee strike, to stand out from other knee jabs, and also to really emphasize that speed (though it would also be one of the weakest Pummels for obvious balance reasons)! Could even give him a smug expression on his face while he's doing it to further show off his personality! Now maybe it's just me, but, I also kinda feel like Sonic has become both more expressive, and less expressive at the same time from For onward if that makes any sense, and what I mean by that is that I wish he kept his shit-eating grin from X as opposed to just smirking as while I do think the latter still fit his character, I feel like the grin really defied who he is. If we do get Smash 6/7, I do hope Roger Craig Smith says Sonic's more iconic lines in the English version of X as I'm not a fan of his newer ones in For onward. Another solid Remake It! video, Delzethin! :D Very impressive how you managed to not use much material from Frontiers while still finding ways to swap out some of his older moves with better improved ones, and leaving some of his old ones alone, and not make him as broken! I look forward to seeing what you have install for future RI videos! Maybe you could find ways to make Daisy not be a clone of Peach anymore, and could be her own, separate fighter! Or maybe include abilities from Super Princess Peach as part of Peach's Moveset while also checking to make sure it fits Smash's fighting style! Perhaps have Bowser where he isn't fast since he's much slower in the Mario universe, as well as having him use more claw attacks, and headbutts like in the past as opposed to just punches, and kicks!

Amazing video! I hope Sonic gets a rework similar to this whenever the next Smash comes around. One change I’d make is somewhat bringing back his old dash attack from Smash 4. Pressing the button once would have him curl up into a ball for a multi hit attack, pressing it again would have him do the slide mentioned in the video. It’s another “ball move” which some people complain about, but I feel this one would be fitting as rolling was a big part of keeping momentum in the classic games. EDIT: Also, I feel like Up Special is a little strange. I understand the current spring being an annoying move but I feel like it could be reworked by using the modern springs that have propellers when in the air, same functionality without the gimping.

I've been waiting for this for a long time, and overall it's...pretty good. I especially love how you combined the Spin Dashes together AND added the Drop Dash from Mania. That's an idea I've also wanted Sonic to do. I was a little thrown off when you put the Sonic Eagle as the Back Air, but after you explained why you did, it makes sense. I am still a tiny bit mixed on giving Sonic the Boost and a meter mechanic though, but with the way you made it work, it makes Sonic a lot more fun to play as and less annoying to fight against, so I'm a lot less mixed. The only thing I'm not a fan of is replacing the Spring with Wild Rush as Sonic's Up Special. I get that it's so that Sonic doesn't constantly gimp people with it, but Springs are a very iconic part of Sonic and I personally feel like getting rid of it is rather disappointing. But other than that, this was a really good moveset revamp!

The one thing I would want to change is his forward smash. When I first played Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, I always thought his basic full-power charged attack in that game would work amazingly. (For those who haven’t seen it, Sonic leans back to one foot while charging, then launches into a multi-hit torpedo-like horizontal spinning kick.)

Yeah, this was pretty expected for the next Remake It. Sonic is not in a great spot right now moveset wise, and a character as iconic as him should have a more interesting moveset. Overall Thoughts: Encouraging aggression via the boost meter is a good change, reminds me of Guilty Gear’s Tension Gauge. I don’t think giving characters meters is that big of a deal, as long as it makes sense for the mechanic in question. Sonic Eagle being Back Air is kinda weird, but I do see your reasoning. (Later Edit: Though I do think FAir and BAir being switched would work just as well.) The new Final Smash is perfect. I do think we could stand to bring in more of Sonic’s personality, though, as in Smash 4 and Ultimate, that part of him is lacking.

I love how so many RU-vidrs make their own movessets for Sonic because they all have amazing ideas and make Sonic more unique and better than how he is in SSBU!! They also make it where Sonic is more fun to play as and fight against!!

Man, that boost was the best thing because it made me so frustrated at the idea, but when you explained it I started to love the idea. Very thankful how you put that Frontiers spin on it. The only thing I wild thing that I would add is that when his Final Smash starts, the stage music changes to a random theme that has been used for Super Sonic that plays for either the final Smash or even better if it continues playing after it ends until he loses a stock

The Quick Cyloop could work well as a replacement for his up throw. Also, with the Final Horizon update, his Grand Slam against The End would make for a perfect Final Smash animation.

Coming from a Sonic main, and Sonic fan in general, this is probably the best new moveset concept I’ve ever seen! I would love to see a moveset like this be added to Sonic in a future Smash title, and even if not, I would love to see a modder in the Smash community make this moveset a reality!

This is a really neat interpretation of a new moveset for Sonic. If you wanted to incorporate the cyloop into it. I've had the idea that it could be up throw, since it pops enemies upwards in Frontiers. Maybe change his down smash to a break dance kick, I dunno something about Sonic doing that as an attack just feels right.

Only tweak I'd make is to Wild Rush. I'd have it work kind of like Pikachu's Quick Attack where you pick which direction you move after each subsequent dash and you could get ONE extra dash per boost bar segment (assuming it was three segments like the illustration). Depending on balance needs, you could have it require a segment to make any attack dash so that you're limited to three dashes max instead of four but I think four would be fine if they're short.

This is amazing!!! Even better than my own which I may have to revamp again! I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone add the tricks into the moveset at all! It works quite well. Oh by tricks I mean the ones in the modern games nowadays like Generations and all as they’re ones I know well. Especially generations since it’s my personal favourite with Frontiers dangerously close due to it’s soundtrack

Cool moveset. I'd personally keep his jab and side-tilt the same since the examples you gave are kind of hard for me to imagine, but everything else is really good. For the longest time, I thought Sonic's boost would work like Palutena's Super Speed custom side special from Smash 4, but the way you handled the boost makes it a lot more dynamic. It's like a mix of the Frontiers boost and the version from Sonic Unleashed on Wii.

That's pretty cool. I would recommend giving the start up invincibility frames for the boost to deal with zoners. I think it is fair as it's a resource that have to be earned in the first place and rewards a sonic player for being aggressive.

A really cool change to sonic’s move set. I think one thing that would be cool is if you’re boosting on the ground you can use some unique smash attacks that have either high knock back or damage, but missing the attack leaves sonic open to a counter attack so timing a boost attack is important

I love the idea of Sonic’s new gimmick being more momentum-based, but he can’t make the most of it if he doesn’t approach the enemy. Now I’m not a massive Sonic fan, but you did a great job recreating his moveset and even commenting on how each move works and even balanced, the latter part doesn’t pop up too often on these type of videos. Also, that Final Smash idea is BRUTAL! Similar to the current interpretation, but with more impact and style!

Great moveset! I put out a similar pitch fairly recently, but I think I'd def rather have a boost side special than a Sonic Boom side special like I pitched. Kinda wild that everyone who makes one of these vids seems to be pitching air taunts, but I guess that just goes to show how sick they'd be!

I love most of these! They're exactly what I would've chosen myself. Personally though, I would've kept his up-b as is. Since Sonic moves so fast, and since the original launched him so high, it served as a good move to recover with in case you accidentally overshot a move (such as his original side-b).

I love this interpretation of Sonic, this feels more of an homage of Sonic's entire history compared to the 90% classic spinoff + clone moves of the official moveset. I had something similar to a boost meter in my overhaul proposal, however the purpose was to increase his overall mobility and damage when it was filled (Sonic's base speed was nerfed to ~fox level to compensate). I also changed his up special to be the Sonic Cyclone, another Adventure era move that won't send Sonic as far as his spring, but will send anyone upwards for an aerial combo. Good work!

11:54 For D-throw i think you can use the Quick Cyloop from Frontiers. The cyloop itself will deal damage and will spawn a boost pad (like some chests on Chaos / Ouranos Island) that launches the opponent forward at a low angle to tech chases, exactly like his actual d-throw but with a reference to his recent game (Maybe the boost pad can throw opponents that are near enough but only if they are grounded)

The only thing I would add to this, which is something I've never seen people consider. Is a light speed dash/chaos control mechanic. The way it would work is when you parry you can hit jump and you'll dash backwards while they're in parry stun. However, if you hold special while shielding and parry you'll teleport behind your opponent ready to attack.

it"s been almost a year since this came out and I love the new move set for sonic. but i have a few ideas. Most of his attacks are fine but for his sonic eagle, he sends anyone behind him upwards and the one in front of him downwards if you get the spike sweet spot. For his down smash, he should have the breakdance down smash he used in project m. As for his specials, you can really abuse the boost mechanic for them. Homing attack gains more power and reaches further depending on how long you hold down the b button. And if you expend all 3 boost bars, sonic gains a light blue aura and homing attacks multiple different enemies or just one multiple times. For the boost special itself, the more you hold the b button, the longer the move lasts, and you zoom past or completely move through any projectiles and enemies. and if you hit a wall, sonic runs up the wall or bounces off it and quickly turns around. Finally for his spin dash, if you hold down the b button, you expend the boost gauge for further distance, more power, more hits like his old down special, and if you use all 3 bars, sonic gains super armor for most of the move until he stops moving like his new wild rush. But for the downsides, sonic's charged attacks have more end lag, more startup, and can be interrupted at the start. my final idea is for the taunts. Using more fluidity depending on the voice actor, the ability to change the voice lines through settings or something new, like they can use Ryan Drummond, Jason Griffith (My favorite personally), or Roger Smith's old voice lines or smash makes new ones entirely, i'd prefer to stick to Jason Griffith but i"ll take what i can get.

I think Its also interesting to think about what wisps could do in his moveset. For example: -Lazer could be an adjustable Up B, like pikachu, but a telegraphed line with decent damage. Could even be cool if this move executed players after 100% or so, like how it kills lines of enemies in the games. -Drill could be a Down B that lets you travel through parts of the stage, either straight down or on a timer, damaging people on exit, but taking a stock if your timer expires in the floor. -Cube could be a Down A/B where you slam down, literally just kirby down b. -Hitting enemies could release boost wisps for your boost meter Idea, where thematically it makes sense that enough hits grants you 1 boost, as well as taking a stock could instantly fill an extra one. -Rocket could be an Up B that sends you straight up, maybe letting you skydive back down with adjustable speed/falling contact damage -Spike could be spindash... this ones dumb and would literally just be Down B but look different... and climb walls i guess -Hover... another pretty dumb one, but i guess a timed Up B where you can float in any direction. -Frenzy could be a side B that gets stronger every time you hit someone, but would lock you to the ground (and maybe short hops) but be very easy to punish from above/with projectiles Any other wisp does not exist. Rythm isnt real, you cant convince me.

Cool moveset! It may be a little off to me, but it's bound to be better than the Smash one. Some tips about what I would change (just in my opinion): -I do have to admit, the back and forward aerials could probably be switched, that way the Sonic Eagle looks less weird. -His Up Special probably could remain the same. Wild Rush probably works better as a Side Special, like Sora's Sonic Boom. To be honest though, with Frontiers out now, there's a lot of possibilities for side specials. -Couple more things, the F-Tilt probably didn't need to be changed. None of the tilts do, as they're all great references to moves from Sonic the Fighters and are very true to it. His Down Smash could also be changed to the Sonic Flare ability from Sonic Battle. Get rid of one Battle move to add two more in, am I right? It adds that extra bit of *flair* that you were talking about with the possible animation change for Sonic's Down Tilt. Also, with one of his throws (mainly up or down) I would love to see a reference to the Quick Cyloop in Frontiers. I was think more of his Down Throw while keeping his forward and back ones. Then just making his Up Throw into the Grand Slam ability from the same game. Honestly though, you're idea is better than mine the more I think about it lol. -Finally, Sonic's Final Smash could probably just go back to Brawl's and 4's. I really don't think a cutscene works to well with Super Sonic, as he's pretty much always been controllable. So relegating him to the same old cutscene FS just feels wrong. Ok. All done. Again, this is just my thoughts. This moveset would still be an amazing change from his moveset in the more recent games. Hope you have a great day, and I hope to see a Tails moveset concept maybe. I've been working on my own, so I would love to see what you come up with.

9:00 I see what you did there. This is probably the best Sonic rework I've seen. It actually tries to fix Sonic's biggest flaw: his playstyle. Giving Sonic more agency with this speed will make him a lot more fun to watch and play. Anything to not make him obnoxiously evasive.

Just a couple of details that could help. Sonic entering the battle should be him exciting cyber space. One of Sonic’s victory animations should be the chaos emeralds dance, and a new idle animation when injured could be his corrupted animation from frontiers. I also thing that sonic should start with a single boost bar at the beginning of the round, that would allow one to begin combos a lot easier. You know I must have been playing Sonic wrong in smash bros, I’ve always been very aggressive and usually start the battle with a spin dash jump and homing attack combo.

I enjoy this new moveset idea, but I disagree with removing the spring for the up special. Springs are one of the most iconic parts of Sonic. To compromise, we could make the move technically function exactly how you described the Wild Rush up special working, but just have Sonic bounce off a spring (or a series of springs in the case of spending a boost charge).

This moveset is PERFECT! It incorporates Sonic's newer abilities like boosts and Frontiers combat, and it encourages a rushdown-style mindset, which is the far more fun way to play Sonic. The only thing I'd consider changing is making his nair more of a lingering hitbox to represent how he attacks by jumping in 2d/classic Sonic games

Aerial taunts would be pretty cool. I also think it'd be neat to incorporate directional dash attacks to show his versatility at high speed, since he has both his sliding dash and his sliding kick from Sonic '06. For his up dash attack, it could just cancel into up tilt to avoid upward attack redundancy. Finally, I think the final hit for his Final Smash should be a supercharged homing attack; and as an aesthetic flare, hits so hard it scatters the Chaos Emeralds and immediately reverts Super Sonic back to base form. It'd also be neat if he could act out of it, potentially landing a homing attack to finish off an opponent that wasn't quite K.O.'d from his Final Smash.

I like your version of Sonic, particularly his new/altered specials, and the Boost gauge encouraging staying in the fray. I'm not a Sonic player, but personally I'd like to see more of his normals changed: having a punch (and/or kick) flurry on his jab seems like an 'obvious' thing missing from his design (considering his entire thing is "speed"), a multi-hit breakdance-kick for his down-smash (though it might be too similar to his breakdance taunt?), and perhaps some kind of forward-propelling multi-hitting forward-smash... although perhaps a single-hit finisher is more reliable in practice.

While I don't play smash anymore like I used to, I'm always happy to see love the characters in the game with moveset alterations, especially with Sonic. I think my only tweak I'd prefer is his side-B and that's to change it so depending on the boost gauge, it could deal damage. Like maxed put he can pretty much plow through enemies similar to both Charizard's Flare Blitz and Fox's Up special.

I ended up making my own moveset for sonic a while back, before frontiers. I made the final smash a cinematic one like in the video, but mine was a recreation of the final showdown between sonic and eggman in the first movie. It'd also made it so that each alternate skin altered the final smash, changing what sonic transformed into: • Adventure (super) • Classic (hyper sonic, ends with a sparkling screen clear(doesn't actually act as a screen clear)) [different fur tone] • Boom (uses the laso) • Black knight (excalibur) [would have the gauntlet, but not the sword, though it could show up in a taught] • Pages (dark spine super sonic) [has the little fire on his chest] • Dark (dark super sonic) [not full dark sonic] • Movie (electric) • Fleetway (fleetway super sonic) [not sure how this would look outside of the transformation]

Finally a fitting moveset for the blue blur, I always felt like his Ultimate moveset was really lacking and didn't feel as Sonic-like as it should've, so if this was his official moveset it would be way better as it keeps the Sonic players constantly attacking while also being able to escape fast enough if they get into a sticky situation, and it makes it all the harder to camp with him wich makes him less toxic.

I thought I'd share my opinions on the version of Sonic I'd like to see. (Might make a video on it.) For Normal Attack - Normal A- I'd change it to the jabs from Frontiers (like the Video) but more stylish Side A- I would give his side A - a long stretched arm punch/swing/hook similar to his current side smash attack. Down A - keep the same as ultimate but more stylish and smoother like a break dance sweep Up A - keep the same as ultimate Dash attack - I would keep the slide like in the video as his dash attack For Smash attack. - Side smash attack - I couldn't really understand or picture Sonic's side A - somersault (from the video) for his forward Attack (and I know it's referencing SA2, but in practice within smash I'm struggling to picture it. Not saying it's impossible though.) So I would like to change it by making the somersault his side smash attack that you can charge and have Sonic take a dynamic pose, release and he rolls into a ball and charges at intense speed toward the direction you're holding the smash attack AND THEN he can U-turn back to the starting position. Similar to his Brawl down smash. Up smash- I like the up smash idea mentioned in the video that combines Sonic's and Wolf's up smash with the spinning kick animation from frontiers or like Terry's Up B/Recovery Down Smash- I'd keep his down smash the same as ultimate but more stylish when recovering from the move For Aerials - Forward Aerial- I don't understand how his back air is Sonic Eagle (in the video) and I'm struggling to understand how it would work in practice. I think Sonic Eagle should be his front/forward Aerial. (Like project M) Normal Aerial- I would keep his Nair the same as it is in Ultimate Back Aerial- I would keep his back air the same the same as it is in Ultimate Down Aerial- I would change his dair to a drop dash spike similar to a custom move for Sonic in smash 4 for Wii U where Sonic morphs into a balls and slams down on his opponent - which if done to your opponent when they're on the ground would bury them into the ground And if done to your opponent offstage would spike them and bounce you up (about a Mario goomba stomp height) For grabs - Forward throw- I would change his forward throw to be the same but closer in pose to Sonic's profile Art in smash ultimate Down throw- I'd keep down throw the same as ultimate Back throw- I would keep back throw the same as ultimate Up throw- His up throw I like your idea and think it would work amazing having sonic grab - throw them up - and do a backflip kick (like shown in the video) launching his opponent high above. Special/B moves- Neutral B- Keep his homing attack the same but he does a trick after landing it. Like project M Side B- I like the boost and meter mechanic mentioned in the video (which is similar to Banjo's Wonder Wing side B) I'd like for this version for Sonic to do his iconic Figure 8 dash, boost at mach speed with no starting lag and low end lag, does a good amount of damage, and uses a meter (3) which recharges by attacking your opponent like Hero's stamina bar does. Up B- I'd keep the same but have sonic do a twirl animation (like from Sonic CD) at the start of the spring jump that has him end facing the direction you originally were facing Down B- combines his current smash ultimate side B and down B Into one move This is my take on Sonic's moveset. Thank you Sega, Nintendo, and all Sonic fan's for keeping Sonic great for years 🦔

I love how I had to pause the video when he said side-b was gonna be boost, and perfectly predicted what it was going to do mechanically. Even not doing damage, now having to actually scrap with the opponent to get your get-out-jail-free options makes him a lot less campy. It would also let you string crazy combos if you could cancel some moves into it while some being able to cancel out of it.
