Remaking My First Vintage Sew: 1950s Coat Gets a Makeover [CC]

Today I'm remaking my first vintage sewing project - a winter coat which was the very first vintage pattern I ever used. What sewing sins will I uncover? What vintage nonsense will still dog my footsteps as I try remaking it?

Dear past Liz, I am glad you did sew a coat once, as future Liz will use it to make another of her lovely videos and as it will show her how much she has learned. You will get my attention because of you sitting in some kind of a closet to do voice overs and you will convince me to stay by a wonderful moderation of a panel during what will be known as the first CoCoVid. Rest assured future Liz developps and gets stronger and braver with each step and each video and that you and her will touch many peoples hearts. And don't worry too much about that toiletpaper thingie...it will all work out at the end. Yours Fanny Dear future Liz, what wonderful words you found for your past self and for us who join you on your journey. I hope that you'll get more confident and content with each video and that you will never get tired of taking us with you on your journey... wherever it may lead in the end. Yours Fanny P.S. Miko sends a woof to Rosie.

Your Future/Past Liz conversation was as beautiful as the reconstruction of your coat. You remind us that we all grow. We all learn, and sometimes the most humbling thing we can do is return to one of our first projects, and either give it a makeover, or use the lessons learned to create anew. Thank you for the glimpse of your journey over the last two years.

Future Liz: “did you use embroidery floss for this??” Past Liz: “yeah, thread is thread.” Future Liz: Past Liz: “…..right?” Me: “……right?😬” *rethinks thread choices*

I also had myself a little cry. Everything about this is wonderful, heartfelt, and all too sharply real. I'm in a place where I'm learning to accept who I am and grow/change what I need to change. I hope I'm able to do it with as much bravery and grace as you.

I believe in you! This world is weird and scary and wholly unpredictable. It’s a wonder we are able to manage anything at all. I know you can do it, and allow me to say that it isn’t always graceful - often it’s weird and ugly and uncomfortable and it’s totally OK. You don’t have to show those bits to anyone to know they they were real.
@Rowan.Evander

@@LizCapism Thank you so, so much. And you're right about it not being graceful. There's no shame in it but that's a lesson my anxious little brain is being stubborn about taking in.

Emotions and nostalgia help us process what we've done (or not done) and in this process of accountability (whether we take it bit by bit or chunk by chunk) we grow as humans. You are seen, Liz. And thank you for letting us see you. We are all better humans for it.

OK now I'm weeping hot salty tears over this crazy time, remembering my first big project in late 2019 - early 2020 and how I thought I would wear it to a Comic Con. And then everything shit down. How long ago January 2020 seems. But I'm inspired by your remake of the coat, what a great project and a great way to reflect back on how your skills and knowledge have improved. Lovely vid.

You have done amazing things in these two years and you have played a part in my own recovery. I found you shortly after I lost the use of my right arm. I was told I might get some use back and I was so depressed, then Utube told me to watch you and I found a whole world of loving and supportive people. I'm well on my way to regaining use of my arm and it's all thanks to you getting on Utube and saying it's ok to fail, it's all part of growing. With out you, I never would have had the courage to try. I failed a lot at first, but now days I succeed more often than I fail. So thanks for giving me my life back.

The coat looks great. The concept of the video was amazing! Your voiceover (script) always holds me in awe at how well you can articulate a topic. Sometimes you remind me of my spouse who was recently diagnosed with ADHD as an adult after many years of employment instability. Right now they're a stay at home parent. Your journey gives me hope that they will be able to continue to heal and discover paths that will bring them joy not in spite of their chaos and adhd but because of it. Thanks for that.

This video has come at a point in my life where I am grappling with how upset I am at myself for a self perceived failure. I need to cut myself some slack, its been a long 4 years, however I do graduate in just under 48 hrs, with something, not the thing we set out to do but a thing, that everyone else sees as success. Thank you, as much as I have tears streaming down my face, thank you. Can I say if that was your first non skirt damn you did a good job! You got some wear out of it, and wow what progress, but surely it hasn't been two years has it? Really?

You’re tellin’ me! It’s been a wild time. And for the record, I had a similar experience in my undergraduate degree. I transferred out of the teaching program after suffering some serious mental health issues and finished with “only” my BA in English. It took a long time to reckon with changing my life goals in a matter of weeks. It’s ROUGH. But this isn’t the end! You got this.

Just so darn good Liz, in every possible way! It is a great learning experience to look back on old sewing projects ( and life events in general really!) and not just say “what on earth was I thinking!” - but instead to see we did the best we could at the time. Because only by doing that we can acknowledge & take pride in where our skills and understanding are now! ( having said that I Franken- patterned a top yesterday, then woke up this morning and thought bugger I should have just done it * this* way!)

Others have already commented in lovely words on the way you look at your past self, which has brought me to unexpected tears as well. I would like to add that I was in awe of the feat you've accomplished with this project. At least judging by what I know of ADHD brains, redoing a project that was already finished sounds like a drain for motivation. As someone who has trouble focussing attention and motivation right now, this was beautiful to watch. (I apologise if I'm being presumptuous, putting my feelings into words is difficult sometimes)
@LizCapism
@LizCapism 2 года назад
You’re totally not wrong! It’s one of the reasons it took me two years. The motivation came externally in the form of -35°C temperatures and the need for a coat that wasn’t broken!

So I was expecting some great sewing, which was delivered, and some giggles, also delivered with the creative stitching positions... I make steel armour and honestly, sometimes trying to work with things that aren't quite right is actually more difficult than starting all over with new pieces.... BTW the toilet paper in bulk...I was thankful when that I have been ordering online in bulk too. The town I live in was out for almost two weeks but I had just gotten my shipment a week or so before the height of the chaos. I was wondering though; where do you order from?

Wouldn't it be nice, if we could fix all our past mistakes so easily? And give ourselves an encouraging pep-talk, while we're at it? Also: what's wrong with using embroidery floss to attach buttons? Asking for a friend 😉
@LizCapism
@LizCapism 2 года назад
Embroidery floss has lots of threads so it seems like it would be strong, but they are wound so loose that they wear away pretty quickly and so something like a coat which takes some hard-wearing won’t work well with the floss.

Is that a New Homo sewing machine? How do you actually get it to work? What kind of needles do you buy? Which way do you put them in? How do you get it to pick up the bobbin thread? Mine has been cursed so badly that I wouldn't be surprised if there was a jealous ghost who didn't want me using their machine. Is it from around 1904, like mine, and therefore works similarly? I have gone through so much hell with a dishonest sewing machine repair place, that tried to sell me my own parts from this machine, then told me it "wasn't worth fixing, but luckily we have others you can buy." Someone please help me, I really want to actually enjoy my machine!
@LizCapism
@LizCapism 2 года назад
It’s a 1924 singer 27 model machine. I bought it used from a seller who posted videos of it working properly, so I knew I wasn’t getting a dud. The needles I use are just standard “universal” needles from the fabric store. It’s a “shuttle bobbin” variety, which is a cylindrical casing that holds the bobbin in the compartment under the needle. You’ve got me thinking I should finally make a video about this thing! I got pretty lucky with mine.
