I decided to remake that sewing project now that I am a professional costume maker with a degree and 5 years experience making costumes for London's West End.
I'm still not entirely convinced about some of the artistic decisions I made as a 15 year old but I can safely say that my sewing has definitely improved!
There will also be a part 3 to this little series so watch this space for a video where I remake the skirt.
For more information about the supplies I used in this video see below:
Please be aware that these may be affiliate links.
My sewing machine: www.bernina.co...
The fabric: from my stash. Originally bought on Goldhawk Road.
The pattern: It looks like this particular pattern is out of print but there are several copies on Etsy: - AD tidd.ly/3caIZ16
The interfacing: - AD tidd.ly/38dx6Gy
The buttons: - AD www.ebay.co.uk...
My scissors: www.williamgee...
My mini iron: - AD tidd.ly/2NZ9nTT
It doesn't cost you anything extra, but if you purchase something through these link I make a small commission for referring you. This helps to fund more sewing projects!
If you enjoyed this video or found it helpful, please consider buying my a cup of coffee. This helps me to buy fabric and notions so that I can make more sewing videos for you! All contributions greatly appreciated: ko-fi.com/retr...

The remade blouse looks lovely, it must be so satisfying to be able to see your sewing progress so clearly in a garment. Also had a good chuckle at the middle-part attempt at the end, I tried it too and felt the same way! 😅

Horizontal buttonholes don't let the button slip out as easy. I was taught to try and have one buttonhole on the bustline to prevent gaping.

Very pretty and like you said, more sophisticated. The balance is definitely better with the bigger collar! Also, imo the hairstyle makes it look vintage or modern.

My trick for covering up a garment that was cut too short is to sew bias tape to the edge with a 6 mm allowance (or less if necessary), and then fold the tape under for the hem. This was a trick my grandmother showed me when I was young because I took a growth spurt and suddenly all my clothes were too short. So we lengthened them. She was a huge proponent of the “teach the children how to do things themselves so they will become capable and independent adults” school of thought.
@RetroClaude

She sounds like an amazing Grandma! I do end up bias binding the hem of the skirt as you described! That video will be up next time 😄

My gran taught me that horizontal button holes are stronger especially in knitwear as they don't pull out as easily. I've noticed my vintage tweed coats have horizontal button holes. I think the vertical ones are faster on a production line. I usually do vertical buttons with a horizontal button hole just at the bust because I'm a wheelchair user and I find buttons on fitted garments pop at the bust quite often. I must say it's helped with fit and gaping issues a lot and tbh you can't tell when you wear it. And frankly if you can see one button hole is in a different direction you should probably stop looking at my chest 😂

Frixion pens are so awesome for sewing! Tip: if you’ve accidentally ironed away your lines, you can nearly always restore them by popping your fabric in the freezer for an hour or so. I occasionally find the wait preferable to re-drawing. I use a pin for buttons, too! I was taught to lay a pin or needle on top of the button, between the holes and sew the stitches over the pin. It leaves the perfect amount of space, and keeps your stitches even. I’m thoroughly enjoying this little series, though I’m incredibly jealous that you can still wear things you made in high school. It’s good to be reminded that we’re always improving with time and practice. Much love, and be well.
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 3 года назад
I didn't know that about frixion pens so thank you! And just a brief note to say that I am only about the same size as I was when I was in school because 1) I didn't grow past the age of 12 and 2) I have to manage my disability with diet and have about 10 million allergies and chronic nausea. So please don't compare yourself to me because I am certainly not 'the healthy norm'. 💚😊

@@RetroClaude Oh, no!! I didn’t mean it that way! I’m so sorry. 🥺🥺 I have EDS, RA, and Hashimoto’s, and a host of other co-morbidities that have caused extreme weight gain (regardless of my carefully managed diet). If I were still my high school size, I wouldn’t be the healthy norm, either, I’d just be smaller. I’m sorry I said something that sounded so very ableist.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video and like the honesty about health and ability (chronic illnesses are not fun). I've heard that horizontal buttonholes are an indicator of good craftsmanship since the buttons and holes have to line up more evenly than they would have in a vertical hole situation, since they can be a bit misaligned without the garment "bunching". However, I suppose the holes would be more visible if there's misalignment so it doesn't hide the problem. Again, I have only heard this and can't remember where or from whom so I don't know if it's actually true at all. Just a thought that might be worth exploring.

I always press hems before I sew them. If in doubt why not do fun diagonal buttonholes? Is the idea of chisel not that you bash it with a Hammer? The blouse turned out great and I‘m very envious that you still fit into your clothes from high school! The project may have been a kind of procrastination, but any prorastination that gives you a crisp wearable blouse cannot be really bad. I also sad that I can only subscribe once.
