I totally agree with you and I think that if even the next software update will offer such insignificant, ridicolous changes as they've been up to now, that will be for many people the end of hope and trust in the company's will to improve their product and listen to their costumers.

I am always so baffled by it. I just enable RM to check for updates. I think there were 2 from the time I bought it and they were usless. So minor and insignificant. I can't understand why don't they invest time in real changes?

Hi Voja! As always, a precise analysis of the device and situation: huge fan of you! I've been using the reMarkable 2 since November (three/four months now) as a student, to take notes and study (I say this so you can understand my experience with it). I've been absolutely loving it, I thing it makes it a lot easier for me (just the way I can organize my papers: I've more than a thousand pages already, if I had those on paper my room would be filled in a sec, or having exams from home, ecc), and even though all the problems you pointed out are real (I can add a very simple thing: we can't make shapes, as a straight line, or a circle, which for a math student like me is kinda meh) I wanted to point out that the device is still amazing! For sure it can be improved, and the staff has to work to improve it, but anyway the writing experience is superb. Sure, the person wanting to buy it, must have clear what he wants to do with the rm2, because it does things better than others. To make it clear, I just wanted to point out that the situation is not that drastic (to me at least). Greetings from Italy!

I totally get it and it's great that you are happy with your device, but what I'm saying is that other devices of that type are even better, and rM2 could and should be, because it takes so little to make it A LOT better for everyone :)

I have the rm1 and just got the boox lumi. In terms of functionality, boox blow the rm out of the water. I’m not talking about adding more apps. Just the basics like adding your template. In boox, you just select the file move it into template and now it available as a template. Things like having a real landscape mode is another missed opportunity. The actual writing experience out of the box, I say rm still has an edge but everything else it is boox. If rm not able to generate these features, open up the software so that others can. In terms of style I think rm2 definitely has nice edge but like Hollywood it would be nice to know that there was substance under the skin.
@n1msu

The fact that these guys replace a damaged unit is pretty (not going to use the r word again). If this happens to any other tech, whether it be a car or iphone, it's classed as negligence so if anybody does get annoyed about response time, just be grateful your accident which damaged the unit is going to be replaced. Waiting 2 weeks to receive a reply for a faulty unit replacement is less good though. Personally, I don't think they should have to replace damaged units, this costs the business and depending on amount of complaints, keeps unit prices high. I hope they reinforce the stylus eventually. I am always dropping pens.

The platform is exactly the same, so the same limitations are present on both devices. Latency is absolutely workable on rM1 as well, very nice writing feel too. I've received my Remarkable 2 back with batch 5, and I've been generally happy with it. I used it as a student, for taking notes during meetings, plan ahead experiments, and read through and marker papers in PDF format. The hardware still is a joy to use, the software gave me no troubles - but on the other side, there has been hardly any improvement. I think the device could be much more cappable and useful, and it's sad to see the (un)Remarkable software department sitting on their rear ends and apparently doing next to nothing. I've also sent a ticket reporting the jittery lines, hoping to do my part. It doesn't annoy me personally, but still it simply should not happen on a device at this price point, especially considering how easy it is to install a community fix for it. One can only hope it'll become better in the future.

I love my reMarkable and its working really great! Had it fall down by accident a couple of times and neither the tablet nor the marker plus took any damage. For sure to make it even more damage resistent is always a good idea! If I compare it though to certain apple products or also other big brands in the smartphone industry I must say that the reMarkable quality is very good! (At least based on my personal experiences) Concerning regularity of software updates and features it would be great to have a more responsive team behind the reMarkable. On the other hand I knew pretty exactly what I was going to buy and what features it had when I've spent the money on it. Therefore it is actually not a big point to me... I've used mine for 4 months and I agree with everything you've said here. I love the look and feel of the device, but it doesn't feel robust. The software is really basic, and lacking features, such that I hacked it, which helps but should not be necessary. The remarkable could be said to be simple, but I feel this is only because there isn't much there, not because the software is good or well designed. The whole package comes across as underfunded and lazy, and only a big quality software upgrade will stop me jumping to the SuperNote platform.
@cyell4947

Thanks for the informative video! The problem with the poor software and infrequent updates is also that the platform is not open to third-party programs without "hack". If you could install programs like on Linux (and they would stay with a software update) and open them from a home screen, you could forgive the poor reader. After all, it is a version of Linux - if you want a browser, you could install it, if you want to use Koreader as a reader, you could use that, etc. It just doesn't work because rM prevents it. It's just that rM would like to be like Apple without bringing comparable software. Whereby? Even under iOS you can install apps. I now have a new version of the rM 2 - the problem with the lines is not there. Maybe it is partly a hardware problem. However, I could not use it in everyday life without Koreader. The software have to be improved!

I'm loving the Remarkable, but experienced my first problem today: I didn't use the device for a few weeks and hadn't noticed the battery was nearly empty when I last used it. Now the device says it's out of battery, but doesn't seem to charge when connected to a charger. When I plug it in it does start up like you show in your video, but immediately shuts down again and shows the same 'out of battery' response. Someone in the Facebook user group had the same issue and solved it by using different chargers, so I'm going to try that and leave the device to charge for a while. Hopefully this solves it, otherwise I might have to contact customer service, which would mean not being able to use my device for at least 2 weeks. Other than this I have not encountered any of the common errors or problems and have been happily using the device for some months now.

Very useful, thanks. Everything I read about this puts me off more and more. I just can't buy one so I need to look at other products. One update that surely has to be top of the development list is the ability to OCR search your handwritten notes? Having a digital notes product that can't search seems bonkers to me. I can already not search my £1 notepads so there's no way I can spend £500 on this to still not be able to search my notes. This, combined with their evidently terrible customer service means I'm out. Shame.

Perfect summary. Although I have been very happy with my RM2, it was not worth the wait, stress and additional price (I sold RM1 and paid the difference). I think the RM1 was the real product and the RM2 is actually a beta of what could come in the future (and if I like to hold them in my arms, I, myself do not like to be a guinea pig). Anyways I will not be fooled again when they launch RM3 (and haha I know they have an amazing marketing). But more seriously, regarding RM software team: nobody here knows about them or what is going on? Any interesting gossip? I wonder if they are maybe no competent enough, focusing on other cash bringing segments eg. companies or public sector, if they are on sick leave or daddy/mommy leave (Norway has amazing leaves when it comes to social care and it is very difficult to fire an employee) or any romance drama office ongoing... any intel would be very much appreciated by the RM team. .....Or maybe they are going to be sold to Amazon (since they have been funded by an invesrment firm) and thus cannot go to far in development to keep consistency with their future buyers...

I 100% agree it is a beautiful device being held hostage by crappy software. It's a decision, it's not a bug it's a feature, I think you were initially right, there is going to be a subscription model coming. There is definitely a strategy, but overall a contempt for all the hundreds of thousands of customers. Completely agree, it's so disrespectful and I will continue to use my R2, but I will also investigate Boox, because the R2 software lacks such basic functionality that the real opportunity of a digital writing device presents. Thankfully, there is a lot of space for innovation here, so they are just completely putting a welcome mat for anyone who can do better. And from a software perspective that's not hard. The intense marketing and the simultaneous bad support and lack of software fixes. Well. It's enough. They definitely don't have my loyalty. Which is sad, as the machine is beautiful

funny thing is, I don't really care what weight such equipment is, as long as it's extremely durable I cary it with care and pride. That kinda guy. I'd even buy it if it had tempered metal casing with carbon fiber back. Heck, maybe they can make one of a one-piece meshed carbon :)

Proxy support or being able to enter WiFi vouchers is missing as well. So no use in too many company wifis - bad for a business tool which requires internet access for key functionalities. Though I really like taking my notes on my rM2.

Mine has a glitch I haven't heard about yet: sometimes when I want to cut and move, e.g. 4 lines of my handwritten text, a few letters and strokes stay wherever they were written, while the other parts of the text can be moved around... :) Personally I like covers for the notebooks because I drew covers for them and then sadly realized that they don't stay as covers. I thought it's a basic function... then came the update fortunately.

I'm waiting for next updates, I really love it, but I'd like they keep going to make the device faster, I mean, the OS is basic, the device should be improvement in speed and tools, there's a difference in hardware component between the first and second Remarkable, well, it's time to mage the money we pay worth!

So I am looking at the Remarkable 2 and the Onyx Book Note Air. My intent is just for taking hand written notes in meetings, task lists from meeting, and to upload the previous notes to a new meeting note. Then to sync to the cloud so I can use them on my PC or Mac. Since you have used and reviewed both, which do you think would be best for this one use case? Thanks

That is what you get for having it assembled in China. inconsistent build quality, substitution of build materials and or tolerances that the designers may not even be aware of.

Is it true that you cannot transfer any document on this device if you are not connected to internet?
@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 3 года назад
No. It has an option of enabling USB over IP, which will give you access to the device via the USB cable and a web browser where you type in the USB IP address the device gives you. Then you have access to the device while offline, but the USB over IP interface is extremely limited. So yeah, technically, you can transfer files while offline, but it's not a smooth experience.

Excellent review, I greatly appreciate your low-key approach to a thorough examination, holding their toes to the fire for their deficiencies, while at the same time telling us to chill-out and balance our expectations with a startup. A refreshing change from the burn-down-the-house tirades we sometimes see. Keep up the good work!

I still don’t really get the disappointment really. If you see it as a note taking device, it is quite good right?
@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 3 года назад
No, it really, really isn't, because it lacks functionality as a note taking device, when compared to the competition, and both Supernote A5X and Boox devices blow it out of the water, as far as a note taking device goes. If you don't understand the disappointment then maybe you should re-watch and listen the video, or at least the conclusion part, because i do say why the first 6 months are a disappointment, very clearly.

@@MyDeepGuide First of all: Appreciate your videos, have watched a bunch of them. Also, I'm kind of new to this e-ink world, still exploring how these devices could potentially help me. Lastly, I will also admit that I sometimes miss stuff, because of attention issues;) Having said that, I actually did watch the video. You talk about the disappointing updates, which I understand. But since I don't own the device, I don't really know what the current state of the platform is, when using the platform daily (i.e. actually using the device in a workflow). You also talk about a jagged line issue, which some seem to have and others don't. I understand that is unacceptable for this device. You then continue by just stating that the software is bad, you give an example that you miss bookmarks,, but I still don't really understand what is so, so bad. Lastly you compare it with RM1, and I'm also a bit puzzled by that;) I believe they run the same software, so how can you be so unhappy with the evolution (i.e. RM2) of a device that you actually liked using. Should I see that in a same way that we wouldn't appreciate having iOS 4 on our newest iPhone anymore, since a platform should evolve overtime? I do understand I should maybe watch more of your videos. What I think I missed until now, also from other RU-vidrs, is someone taking me on a journey of actually using the device and pointing out how Supernote or Onyx are far superior in certain daily use cases. Please forgive me If I just missed video's like that! I can imagine you have made them. I became interested in these devices as an electronic sheet of paper. or writing slate as you say. I see people being productive with RM2 in ways that I could see myself being productive. The beautiful hardware and the best writing experience still make me feel drawn to the device, but Remarkable as a company is losing my sympathy. Very much looking forward to your wishlist video though, I think that will help me a ton in understanding!
@MyDeepGuide
@MyDeepGuide 3 года назад
It's all about context :) So yes, this video makes sense if it is watched as an addition to previously watched videos. If you wish, you can watch some of mine, i have them arranged in playlists, so that can help :) As for comparing to rM1, i compared how the platform has evolved during the rM1's first 6 months and rM2's 6 months. Basically, how much did they listen, improve and fix the platform during the first 6 months of rM1 and their performance as a company during the first 6 months of rM2. I hope that clarifies it. For further details, i invite you to check my indepth reviews of the Supernote A5X and Boox Note Air, and of course, the rM2, if you haven't seen it yet. Then you can watch the Best Devices of 2020 or the comparison between the rM2, Note Air and Supernote A5X that i did recently, to round it all off. By then, you should have a much better understanding of the e-ink world and where the competition is, in relation to the remarkable 2 :) I hope that this helps :)

There are also people who have had their screen break just randomly while not doing anything. And it seems like it's the slight expansion of the battery, because it's so very tight in there it cracks the screen. The company is so lazy and stupid, horrible support and doesn't wanna listen to what we want. There's no way I would have paid full price for this thing. I'm only keeping it because the core function is amazing and it's the one with the lowest latency. But I got some issues that I hope will give me a replacement. But then it's a lottery again where something else could go wrong. I don't even long for much software improvements, only a few things. I think they just wanted to get it out and get the money and now they care even less. My worst complaints are the jagged lines and glossy screen and lack of simple stuff like a functional eraser.
