Does the reMarkable 2 stand up to the latest in e-ink tech. The reMarkable 2 is still being marketed to you as the newest and most innovative tech, but in honesty, you need to sift through the marketing chat to see whether it truly is the one for you. Here I compare it to the latest note taking e-ink tablet, the Onyx Boox Note Air 3 C.

Thank you for your excellent content. Based on your's and others' comparison videos I went ahead and got the Boox Note Air 3C and I am delighted. I've had it for a week and it has fitted into my work and personal life seamlessly. The MS OneNote and OneDrive integration is excellent. The Kindle reader and pdf annotation functionality is very useful, and the built in notes tool slick enough. I did still think long and hard about the single focus of the ReMarkable 2, but I am glad I went with the extra functionality of the Boox.

I own both, too. Switched from RM2 to BOOX. Still not convinced about that switch. The RM2 is the ultimate writing and reading device. Reliable. Thin. Light weight. EASY TO USE. The Boox, on the other hand, can be used in dark conditions, I can also use the e-ink screen to browse the web. Puh. Currently I‘m still using the Boox 3C, but the RM2 is still there and ready to get re-activated at any time.

I own both devices however I find myself using the remarkable more than the Note Air 3c. The Remarkable is just a pleasure to use. IMO the BOOX device tries to do too much and in many cases the implementation is sub par. My phone does a much better job at apps, web browsing, and video. Also, the Remarkable desktop and mobile apps are much better than BOOX which is important to me.

Thank you Kit, this was an excellent comparison! I currently own and love, the Kindle Scribe, and have considered the Remarkable 2 and the Super Note (if Super Note came out with a larger screen size), but honestly, the Note Air 3 C is something I am seriously looking to purchase in the near future, as I really love the additional functionality it offers, such as split screen, copy and paste, drag and drop, etc., and of course, COLOR. it seems like a great investment, and you have been the main source of encouragement for me seriously wanting this device. Although my 12.9 inch iPad Pro has color and all the additional functionality that the Scribe does not, I prefer the e-ink display in the Note Air 3 C, even if the colors are not vibrant or saturated. For my purposes, it would be fine. Thank you for all your content, it really helps me in so many ways!

Have you tried using a paper screen protector for your ipad? Thats what im doing, while using goodnotes. What i've read from people online, supposedly the Boox screen is pretty much a paper screen protector. So, you'd save almost $600 doing that, while having a better color screen. Goodnotes looks REALLY good.

I regret my Remarkable purchase and that I didn’t return it everyday . It’s slow, does not have basic functionality you’d expect it to have. It can’t search handwritten text. Tags are useless. Gestures are inconsistent and glitchy. I fell for the less is more marketing and I’m embarrassed. Discipline from distraction isn’t something a device can provide. I bought the remarkable and never wanted it to be an iPad. I didn’t want it to be a Rocketbook either. To be fair, The battery life and writing on the Remarkable screen is excellent but that’s it.

I feel this comment. Thanks for sharing, no need to be embarrassed, I'd suggest you try and love it for what it is, (for example my current use as a desk jotter,) and maybe later there will be a good partner eink device which is more compelling for you. Otherwise, see what you can get by selling it on the used market and go for a more is more device! 🙂

I’ve looked at many videos on RM2 and its comparison with other eink tablets on the feature of LEARNING one’s handwriting. No one talks about it, beyond saying that it recognises handwriting. But what if it consistently misreads certain letters or words? Is there no way to teach it my handwriting? Also, there seems to be no way to create a dictionary for e.g writing a name, e.g plato with capital P, or turning abbreviations into full words, e.g. abbr into ‘abbreviation’. Both features seem to me essential if the device is to be more than literally a (short) note taker. I’d be grateful for advice.

The thing holding me back on Boox 10.3 vs. Remarkable is size and battery life. On battery size, I understand the trade off is due to the apps. On size, I appreciate the greater writing area on Remarkable.

I want to preface this with a couple of disclaimers. First, I haven't gotten to test out the Boox, but I have played around with a few other notebook replacements like the Amazon Scribe. Next, I am normally the type of person who is in favor of letting the user do more with their device (Android > iOS, Windows > Mac OS, etc.) Now, that said... I just purchased a reMarkable 2 with the Marker+ and Folio Case, and I really don't think that these devices actually benefit much from having a full Android OS. I have a Pixel Fold so I have a Phone/Tablet in my pocket. I don't ever see a world where I would grab my e-Ink device to browse the web, or to do anything outside of note taking, reading, and drawing. I specifically wanted to buy a device that would replace my sketch book, and encourage more consistent note taking and journaling. Every time anyone tries to sell me on one of these alternative tablets they always say "It can do so much more!" But, they NEVER say that it feels better to draw in, they never say it has superior or even comparable drawing tools, they never tell me that the screen has as good of a white to black contrast, and they never say it has a better battery. Those are the MAIN FEATURES of these types of devices and yet they always fall short. For the vast majority of people looking at a product in this category they have no need or want for these extra features. Notebook replacements are 1000% a luxury item that is filling a VERY specific niche. It is a device for someone who wants the feel of working with paper, but also has the disposable income to pay for a $500-$600 notepad. If that is you, you are also likely privileged enough to own another tablet/pc/phone that will give you access to a more robust appstore, and using that other device will be both more convenient as well as a substantially better experience due to the nature of OLED/LCD vs e-Ink. That isn't to say that there aren't people who would like more functionality or just to have the option available to them, but I do think there is something to be said for how specific the use case of these devices is, and how the reMarkable 2 managed to hit all of the right marks for 90% of the consumer base. Maybe I will change my mind in the future, but for now I really do think that the average person who is looking to purchase one of these devices is likely not going to care about having a web browser on it. They are specifically looking for the absolute best paper like experience they can find, and that means having robust writing/drawing tools, a top tier paper like feel when writing, and a clean straightforward interface with little clutter or distraction. These will NEVER replace tablets or phones, so they NEED to be the best digital notebook they can be.

Kit, I’ve owned the RM2 for over three years now and have used it exclusively as my go-to grading tablet (creative writing prof). I also use it for handwritten rough drafts. I bought the Tab Ultra C when it came out last year and tried diligently to incorporate it into my grading workflow, but getting marked-up PDFs off the Boox device and to my students has been frustrating. Just ordered the Note Air 3C this week to see if it can take over drafting and grading from the RM2. Do you have any advice for exporting PDFs with comments from the Note Air 3C? It's an interesting comparison. I feel the remarkable will win in terms of a simple writing or typing tablet without distractions. Many persons still use paper notebooks and this is natural upgrade. As an Engineer the Boox devices seems like a no brainer and definitely attractive but sometimes basic simplicity and focus wins the day. On the other hand the RM 2 could do much better with the features to integrate with other ecosystems like Google or Microsoft. The winner seems to be Supernote except I am not fan of their device designs.

The only downsides for me with rM2 have been DRM epubs, lack of backlight in few occasions and mostly that my company doesn't support it (or any other e-ink device). Luckily their own app/cloud makes up for the last one. DRM free ebook stores luckily exist and lamps have been invented. That being said cannot wait what a rM3 could bring to the table.

I did a ton of research, watching a ton of videos on these devices (including many from this channel) before deciding on the Remakrable, mainly because my use case is all note taking and I wanted the best possible battery life. I went with a refurbished Remarkable from their site (same 100 day warranty) and a aftermarket case / pen to keep costs in check. I like it, but I am getting NOWHERE near the 2 weeks of battery life frequently mentioned. I use mine regularly throughout the day (several times each hour, note taking only) and battery lasts maybe 3 days before I need to charge. I belong to some remarkable facebook groups where other users have described similar experience. I suppose it comes down to how much one actually uses it for note taking during the day, but the difference between 2 weeks and 3 days seems way to big of a gap. Maybe it's my refurb? Possible, but based it also sounds like I'm not alone. While I like the feature set and almost went with the Boox, if Remakable lasts 3 days, does the Boox battery life last what . . . less than a day?

probably the most comprehensive and detailed video I have seen; so much so that I can form my own conclusion based on your review. but bro, I don't think you use them for their 'intended' purposes, which is fine, but something to be pointed out: - These are not tablets, these are handwriting tablets. - If I want colour and typing and apps then neither stands a chance against a proper tablet like an iPad or Android - I'd get any of these tablets ONLY if exceptional handwritten note taking is what I am after - Thus, most of the comparative advantages of the Note over Remarkable become less relevant and its shortcomings more relevant - Some shortcomings of Remarkable are still relevant like cloud compatibility and higher cost [but one shouldn't compare the maxed out version] So using the information provided in the video, I am certain that Note is not the clear choice because it is not better than Remarkable at any of the handwriting tablet features except for Google drive and 365 syncs. [Note is unstable, worse battery life, less polished writing experience, worse screen for handwritten notes].

If RM gave us better access to the Linux underneath then it would be the king. Currently having to wait for community workarounds implemented to the device over SSH is just a bit too annoying to be worth it. I really think RM need to come out swinging with their next release. The whole distraction free no light, no colour, no integrations thing is a stupid hill to die on and I think they will die on it if not careful. Oh and it might be worth mentioning that you can get an extra 40 off a rM2 by going to the ReMarkable Reddit and asking for a code.

When will you do the comparison with the Boox Air 3c with the iPad. I like the idea of having a e-ink device for notes and journals and e-reading but I feel like an iPad can do that just as well so I’m feeling conflicted.

Excellent comparison. The note air 3c is 100% closer to an iPad. For me, the main benefit of e-ink is battery life and the note air 3c only lasting 3 days is a deal breaker. If the note air 3c had 2 weeks battery then it would be an immediate buy.

On the battery life. I just cant see how anything that can last a full work day including travel to and from work is a problem. We can all access a socket in that time surely?

Hardly anyone mentions the biggest drawback of reMarkable 2, which I discovered after half a year of use. Well, it's easy to magnetize it because you just need to put it together with another device that has magnets in the case. The symptom is that the point where the stylus (marker) touches the screen and the point that appears on the screen are different. In my case, they differ by up to 1 mm. This flaw rendered my reMarkable unusable. And their praised technical support only wished me good luck and that the problem would solve itself.

This is true. I placed my RM2 on a stationary bike at the gym while I worked out. There must have been a magnet near the holder and for the next few days there was a large coin-sized spot on the screen where no ink or graphics would appear. It sorted itself out after a few days but RM support just said don't keep it near anything magnetised. That's a challenge because most tablet cases and laptops in a backpack are magnetised. I have to so careful transporting the RM2 around.

I’m already going to have my phone at all times. The advantages of the Boox seem to be things that I could just use my phone for. Or, I could still have those features, with my phone, and have the superior note-taking and sketching ability of the remarkable

Pretty much this. The reMarkable is, to date, LEAGUES ahead of the competition in terms of being a digital notebook. These devices are luxury purchases for people who specifically want the feel of writing/drawing on paper but also want it to be digital. They all cost around the $500-$600 mark after kitted out with a pen and a case, and the only person who is buying that is someone who can afford that cost for an incredibly niche luxury item. If you can afford an e-Ink notebook replacement in 2024 you already have a do it all device in your pocket, that will be both more convenient and do a MUCH better job at running Apps. For a device to even compare to the reMarkable in my opinion it would need to do the following things at least as good. 1. Paper Quality - The device's screen needs to be as paper white as possible. 2. Writing Feel - The device's writing and drawing experience should be as close to pen/pencil on paper as possible. 3. Tools - The device needs to offer a comprehensive and flexible set of writing/drawing tools. 4. Battery Life - The device needs to last at least as long as the reMarkable. If you can't do those 4 things better than the reMarkable, no amount of bonus features will sway me. I want this device to replace my paper notebook/sketchbook. I don't have any fantasy of it replacing my Phone/Tablet. Now, if the Supernote/Boox/Scribe came in at $200 and were lacking on some of the above requirements, but supplemented that with the flexibility of access to the Play Store, maybe there is a case. But to charge nearly the exact same price, and then be worse at the core features of the product category. That is a big miss for me. I feel like a lot of these reviewers are missing the point, and struggling to understand why people are still choosing to use a 4 year old piece of hardware with fewer features. It really does come down to the simple truth, I already have a phone. I don't need or want this device to do more, I want it to do a very specific job incredibly well.

@@TheOldSchoolCrisis dude exactly!! I have a kindle fire, surface pro and s23+ already. when i got this rM2, i fell inlove... i started journaling again and reading because it just feels like the book because of the screen and writing on a paper!! I like journaling but i have too many journals/notebooks and i love digital which is why i buy my books majority on kindle. But being able to get the books on pdf for free is awesome anyway lol. and all your notes is on one gadget. super love it!

@@TheOldSchoolCrisis Direct annotation on .pdf with colour, drawing diagrams, writing scientific equations, syncing with google drive, Onenote, projecting onto other screens with android apps, etc... are all things the BOOX can do but the Remarkable cannot. Most importantly, the Boox is Android and thus has the default encryption, nothing on the Remarkable or Supernote is encrypted. No company with competent data security would allow its employees to work on the Remarkable/Supernote.

thx for the in-depth comparison. I'm a Mac user and the one information I can never get an answer to is the integration with the Apple environment. Google drive, dropbox, OK, but can I sync on iCloud for a Smoot workflow? I guess the answer is no, if I can't find the info. It might have to be an iPad then, because as you so rightfully mentioned in the vid, in 2024 we want integration and smoothness.

Thx. Of course I could but my idea is to streamline and neither are part of my workflow. To me the whole point of icloud which I'm paying for is that it is seamlessly integrated in all my Apple devices. Here I would be adding another step which I don't think I could automate. The e-ink tech seems attractive but the lack of integration with Apple probably will be a deal breaker for me meaning I would need to turn towards an iPad.

If i need the extra features of browsing or any other app etc, i will just use my laptop than struggling in an e ink display. That's why remarkable is great. It is the closest experience of a paper. For example, if i need to read in a dark room, I'll just turn on the light. It's that simple.

I think if you want a color backlit tablet with apps, and full connectivity, buy an ipad. If you want a writing/drawing tablet, the RM2 is good, but the RM3 needs: a back/side light, microSD port to expand memory, color, and improved integration with some third-party backup apps. Not much else (maybe, MAYBE sound to read imported articles, pdfs, or notes you’ve written?). RM doesn’t need to do much else to be the best writing/drawing tablet it can be.

i'm being extremely nitpicky here...11:01 notes to compare the NA3C and RM2. The table in the notes has the NA3C on the left column, RM2 on the right. But physically, the positions of the devices are swapped. For some reason, that was so confusing. I couldn't wrap my head around that for some unknown reason. Other than that, I appreciate the video!

If you use a notebook outside of your work desk you may find yourself in a situation when you need backlight - like on a conference. Condition in which may happen that lights are dimmed to make the presentation more visible. Then you may realise that in such a condition the Remarkable is pretty useless, unfortunately.

I highly recommend notepad and pen. Never powers down, no subscriptions, it feels like writing on real paper (cos it is) and you can replace your 'stylus' for about 40p. Just scan and you can upload to any format you like. And the great thing, is there's no lag, or booting up time, just open and it's ready! I also love that you can drop it without concern, and there's no learning curve.

Disappointed. Thought the Boox was best of all worlds, but for that to happen, it had to fulfill the requisite of long battery life, which seems it doesn't. It is either an ebook or an iPad, Boox failed to be in the middle because of the battery. If the battery could last at least a week with medium use, Boox (Air C) would be considered.

the 227 to 300 ppi comparison you showed doesn‘t tell the truth. The pixels you saw on the RM2 is caused by the ink, the pencil - thats not goot - but it‘s not caused by the lower pixel resolution. Just compare two PDFs on both and the difference is almost gone.
@paulc3752
@paulc3752 4 месяца назад
No indication there will EVER be a hardware update to the RM2. Seriously. It’s well over 3 years old, no backlight, no Google store, no productivity apps, outdated processor, no Kindle access, it’s sluggish, no super refresh, and numerous other reasons. Buy a RM2, and you’ve already purchased an outdated piece of plastic. Oh, but Remarkable has great commercials and marketing 😏🙄
