ABOUT THIS VIDEO
I walked into the Haken Audio bungalow at Superbooth '24 and heard maybe the best playing on an electronic instrument I have ever heard. Rob Schwimmer's performance of Olivier Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time" (arr. for Six Ondes Martenot) performed on a Haken Continuum truly amazed and inspired me. I'm so happy to show all of you how far expressive synthesis has come along. This level of expression, until recently, was never possible with electronic instruments. I can't wait to see how today’s revolution to create expressive musical instruments wil effect music in the future!

ABOUT ANTHONY
Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns , Internal Affairs , The Man From Elysian Fields , 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles , been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller .
His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones , Jack Nitzsche , Lamont Dozier , Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

Agreed. His organ music is on a different level, as if he wants to treat the instrument like an analog synthesizer - solo mixtures, treble melody on pedals over those amazing chords, long long sustained drones and so on. Most important organ composer since Bach.

Rob is a true master and a tremendously warm man. I shed a tear in this exact spot as Rob played this. The recording made here is solid but hearing the instrument in the room is something else. I couldn’t agree more with Anthony. I can’t recall hearing greater expression from a modern electronic instrument but it must be said, Rob is one of a kind. ❤

As a cellist, that’s not the kind of video that I could expect on this channel but WOW !! It reminds me of a night in 2019 in Maurice Ravel academy in St Jean de Luz where Marc Coppey (teacher at CNSMD de Paris) played this beautiful piece…

Very moving piece which is played excellently. I agree with Anthony wholeheartedly that I never heard an electronic instrument played so expressively. I think this is the future. Old fashioned keyboard will fade away and electronic interfaces like the Haken will become the standard. Then finally electronicly generated sounds will become on par with acoustic instruments in expressiveness. This is a game changer.

Rob is Uber-Musical, and the Haken Continuum is the most sensitive instrument of the late 20th and early 21st Century. And the Onde acoustic speaker must be heard live to be believed. Best, Tom Rhea.

What an incredible performance. I didn't know this piece from Messiaens, but this performance is really the essence of what this piece should show. Incredible playing and an eye-opening use of the Continuum. After all these gazillion "beep-tüüt-beep" sinewaves of most presented modules in 2024, this is a beautiful rendering of composition, art and deeply moving playing. We need more of this and less beeping euromodules.

Oh my goodness, I cried! That was astounding. I know this piece intimately. But I had no idea it was originally written for 6 ondes martenots. Wonderful. Thank you.

"there's a world between really quiet and silence" thank for bringing this up! As a classical musician I can tell that the fine control over the quiet volumes, THIS is really where the soul lays in expressive playing. And it's something that a lot of companies really miss!! I'm talking also about regular midi keyboards that do not really allow for that kind of control over volume (not sensitive enough to different velocities) but also a lot of MPE products miss that too. This is something ROLI need to improve with their Seaboard. I had the block edition and it just didn't have the ability to REALLY be that expressive with every note, no matter which sound. Thats why I got the Expressive E Touche. This thing can be really expressive! It turns synths into almost wind instruments in terms of expressivity! I didn't have the chance to play the newer seaboard rise 2 or block M, maybe they did improve this but the bottom line is that its a very important feature that gets overlooked a lot... wish it will change for the better in the future :)
