Benji delighted audiences is many films. The first dog to play Benji was a shelter dog named Higgins, trained by Frank Inn. Later, Higgins' offspring Benjean took over the role for a few films. He is adorable!
What a different world we lived in 50 years ago! I crave the wholesomeness and gratitude of it. Just a couple generations and those things now brainwashed out of people. We need more Benji’s and lovers of Benji in this world. Beautiful story. ❤
This brings tears to my eyes. I trained my first dog based on this video. I had the original vhs tape. Back in 2007/2008, I started my hobby training dogs. I was just barely a kid. My dog lived to be 15 1/2 years old(passed away in 2019) and was the smartest dog in the world along with Benji. People always said he should have been in movies. A huge thankyou for Frank Inn and Benj. They paved the way to my life, several careers, and my love for animals and animal training. RIP.
How lovely of you to share your story. I was moved by your comment and thank you so much for watching. You may find other treasures among my 600 interviews. Blessings to you for loving our furry friends!!!
I loved Benji and remember seeing the first Benji movie with Higgins starring in it as a kid at the theater. I have the Benji DVD collection and it makes me sad everytime I watch knowing he is gone. I'm glad his children continued it after him!
There will never be a famous dog star like Benji - or the first Lassie, Pal. I would have loved to seen those two in a movie together. Lifting the bone while holding the rope with his paw...Adorable!!
@@urienallos7371 If your talking about this video shown, it was actually made in the 80s. Cause by the 90s the dog shown in the video who plays Benji had already passed away.
this brings me back im so glad people upload videos like this i had wandered who was the trainer of benji and the history behind him he was a legend in his own right
@Wadsy Actually I think she was born in 1974 or 1975 cause Higgins(her dad) passed away in 75 a year after he did the movie Benji. And she passed away in 1988 a year after she did her last film Benji the hunted which I saw on theater when I was a kid. I remember they did a documentary on tv about Benji in 1989. I guess this was a year after she passed. Higgins also had a grandson although he didn't end up in any films. But he was on the cover of the Benji Book. And they also used his grandson's paw print on the Benji star like they do in Hollywood. But I don't think it was in Hollywood but near some animal shelter I can't remember what it was called where the owner & trainer Frank donated some money to them. And i think it was also the same place where he first got Higgins as a puppy. Am assuming the grandson was born in the middle 80s and passed away in the late 90s or early 2000s, idk. They don't mention much about him since he wasn't in any films.
He looks like a beautiful dog, so sweet too, I wished he was on Knight Rider and I wonder what became of the other puppies that belonged to the first Benji. Did they even had other dogs for the next generation.
When I was a kid we adopted a dog from a litter of pups that looked a lot like Benji, but the one we adopted was the only black pup in the litter. We named him charcoal because he was just a little black briquette. As he grew up he he grew into his namesake. He grew to be about twice the size of Benji. He kept his black undercoat but his long hair turned white like charcoal ash.
