I watched amateur Tiger take an 8 on the Par 4 #3 church bunker's hole at Oakmont CC, during a practice round with Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and one more who I can't recall at this time, during the week of the 94 U.S. Open. Tiger had a monster drive, leaving himself with a short uphill wedge onto the green. When he chipped onto the green (with stimp meter reading as high as 13 that week) his ball rolled off the backside into a steep, deep bunker with a lip (bunker is no longer behind green currently). Unfortunately instead of taking a possible extra stroke by chipping out and back onto the green, Tiger made multiple attempts to pitch his ball out of the 7 or 8 foot high bunker onto the green. Fuzzy Zoeller and Greg Norman, who's foursome were waiting on the #4 tee, were watching all of this. After Tiger's failure to exit the bunker, they laughingly yelled over and said that even they knew better than to try to pitch out of that bunker. To say that Tiger was embarrassed, would be an understatement.
