Facts my dad used to do the same thing!

My dad never hit me, only yelled a couple of times. My mum on the other hand lol I know everyone says it but: it did me good, wasn’t abuse, just trying to get me up for school despite my refusal. It never hurt but it did tell me how serious she was and how stressed she was. She was a single mum, far from perfect but she raised and supported us alone. Her words hurt more than her fists, “lazy good for nothing little shit”was her favourite and that stuck with me all my life, into my 30s but I wouldn’t trade her for any mum on earth. She hit me but never without provocation, never caused pain and she only did it when all else was failing and she needed me to get up for school. I think the difference between abuse and corporal punishment is found in the motive of the parent. Do they do it regularly or rarely and reluctant? Is it a last resort or a common practice? Is it deserved? Is the parent trying to hurt them or trying to get their attention? Is the parent doing it for the kid’s benefit or for themselves? Are they trying to make a child respect the danger of crossing the road, or force them to go to school? Or is the parent upset about something else and they’re taking it out on the child….. I agree you shouldn’t hit your kids, in an ideal world. I also agree that kids should attend school and be careful crossing the road, in an ideal world. But we don’t live in an ideal world, we live in this one.

I get what you mean with the voice over not mentioning her because it would seem like a scene designed to tell you who does and when. I do think it’s weird that when this was made she was already dead yet they hired an actor to play the adult version of her to do the voiceover at the beginning and end. I know it doesn’t say it but it implies that she’s alive at the time of the film’s release. By mentioning Gerry’s death only it leads you tot think only he died.

I was an extra in We Are Marshall. Had to dress like it was November. It was the middle of summer in Atlanta. I think I lost 5 pounds through sweat.
