These movies were hands down the greatest incarnation of Scooby-Doo that's ever been created. Animation was fire, music was stellar, and the monsters were REAL which was kick-ass.
Obi-Wan Kenobi That show was simply amazing. It reminds me a lot of the Clone Wars; it started out as sort of a kid’s show, but as the seasons went on, the episodes got darker. In one of the final episodes, I remember Velma’s friend being executed by evil Nazi robots, which was pretty morbid.
I believe while these movies are great, they are only one of the greatest incarnations, each has their specialties that makes them great. Mystery Incorporated is another one of the greatest in my opinion.
Zombie Island had great music, Witch’s Ghost gave us the Hex Girls, Alien Invaders was a great love story, and Cyber Space brought back classic monsters.
My favourites are Zombie Island the witch's Ghost, Alien invaders, cyber chase and Meet the Boo Brothers I loved watching all of them when I was little
I think the singing witches were homage to the singing witches in that damn old disney movie with the lady who I can't recall and it's all fading the harder I think about it lol Damn somebody knows what I'm talking about. I'm gonna put a spell on you....😳 It literally faded I can only remember the movie scenes, not names nothing....
Big time dude, and the best part is that it isn't confusing cuz it's a human female and not Lola Bunny.. I've said too much.... maybe I shouldn't have a phone..
Zombie island is my favorite due to how much they captured the horror element especially how much darker it was. Those cat monsters gave me nightmares lol. And the witches ghost I found it dark as well but a tad bit predictable but you gotta admit having tim curry in made it 10x better
Was terrified of zombies as a kid, would have nightmares nonstop every time I saw the image of a zombie, watching them when I was around 15 again made me love it and zoms in general though, however, present day it's just art to me, other than those corny ads lol
Yep your right ! Zombie Island was best due to the fact that it took a different spin on the series where the monsters were actually REAL. Also the fact that the zombies were actually the helpers who were trying to warn the gang of the real villians
The Zombies were scary as hell, specially because the animation and colors in the movie were very different to normal Scooby Doo movies, it was all darker and gloomier
Cyber Chase even makes fun of how the way they split up is always "Fred goes off with Daphne and Velma leaving Scooby and Shaggy on their own." Fred says "Guys I didn't say how we were gonna split up" and Shaggy says "Like do we ever do it any other way."
The Witch one was responsible for making sure 10 year old boys had boners for the bad or goth girls when they turned 12. Talk about subliminal messages.
"The series survive purely on commercial pandering..." As he shows footage of mystery incorporated. One of the deeper of the Scooby-Doo series, and probably the best one.
*Played out of context* “Help me, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” Ryan: “wow, how sexist and stupid. Product of it’s time.” Context in the Actual Movie: *Velma was luring the witch into a trap*
@mrdropkicker1 Well when people like him make such professionally offended or plain ridiculous statements they've to reach even if they've to ignore all context to even do it. What matters is the virtue signaling and "look, look! I'm against such things even my example and points don't make sense, you're proud of me now right equally as deluded viewers! What matters is pandering to that viewpoint!!" It's like online social credit scores for all the wrong reasons. Ryan is one of the lesser examples of this but these days that could just be people are tired of it.
I was a Thorn whore. She pretty much defined what I find attractive on women (aesthetically mostly). After her I'd always turn an eye to characters like Elvira Mistress of the Night or any female character that's dark, gothy or vampiric.
I remember seeing Thorn as really young kid and thinking "I don't know what, but I wanna do something to her" and as an adult, that really makes me question everything about myself. Or it did, until I looked up cosplay of the hexgirls.
Oh man I know I am going to be one of the hundred people that will comment about this films being part of their childhood, but I really need to, the animation, the creatures, the twists, the new characters, the light contrast in the first films, all of the scooby doo shows and movies were so important when I was a kid. Great video and the thumbnail is beautiful.
Used to have these on VHS; didn't buy them, but we would record them when they came on TV (so there were ad breaks recorded). I used to watch them quite a bit on Saturday mornings, and Zombie Island and UFO were my favorite in particular. Have no clue where those VHS tapes are now, but they probably don't have the highest fidelity anymore. Geez, remember when you would record stuff on VHS?
I don't think that Velma falling in that scene was "melodrama" as much as a reference to a Life Alert commercial that was pretty infamous in the early 1990s, at least in the US.
I highly recommend Mystery Incorporated if you want something more for adults. It’s darker, more mature, and more plot driven than any of the other series.
@@JustSilver23 I mean fair, but I feel like it's also a reason we've been dealing with some of the worst Velma characterizations. Granted also doesn't help that it's been a mandate by the higher ups to make the movies be like "monsters don't exist kids! there's nothing to be scared of!" which is why we've been having some of the worst Scooby movies in recent years.
OoF the hexgirls must have been my earliest crush. It was inevitable as a girl who absolutely LOvEs anything to do with monsters and vampires, plus I thought the song was super cool and I remember I used to wish they were a real band and would jam out to their little theme song.
Ahhh, this brings me back. The zombie one scared the shit out of me as a kid. I still have my mom making fun of how I used to name all my Barbies Crystal Amber (I totally forgot she even had a dog until now-- I always thought her name was Crystal Amber lol). Oh man, 20ish years went by so fast
That's probably true I mean it released in 1963 I believe, (all I remember is the pilot episode featured the Black Knight Ghost) so in that span of 55 years many people got to grow up with it, I'd be extremely surprised if someone who owned a TV as a kid didn't know what Scooby-Doo is.
it almost wasn't mine. I managed to watch almost every Scooby-Doo movie and episode even secretly even though my parents kept me from it because they thought it was demonic witchcraft because it's a talking dog that catches ghosts with a hippie and a loose woman in heels and a skirt respectively.
IF you've never checked out Mystery Incorporated, I'd say it's my favourite version of the show. It's different -- no question -- but there's so much to love.
Ryan Hollinger It's easily the best thing to come out of the franchise since Zombie Island. Tons of interesting character development and an a focus on overarching narrative and continuity really set it apart. It also tackles some surprisingly dark stuff thematically, though I won't spoil it. The ending, wew.
This was actually my last scooby doo series I watched kind of for the same reasons you watched Cyber chase last. It was just such a compelling and interesting story that I had to keep watching it and by the end, I realized that this was the final scooby doo show I would watch. Not because it was bad, but just because it ended so well and I wanted my last memories of scooby doo to be of that awesome show
I love that I see you pop up in comments in random videos I watch. I love you and passion and your GoT videos but I love that I'll see you every where, from Tale Foundry to a random scooby doo movie video 😄
I remember watching the Cyber Chase movie on there in late 2002 or 2003. I was so stoked CN was showing it, because I had the movie on VHS (my parents brought it home for me Halloween 2002 and I LOVED it.)
That bit about Daphne being only used as a damsel in distress amuses me because, even back in the 60's, they knew this. I distinctly remember a bit where Velma refers to her as "Danger-prone Daphne."
I still love "where is my mummy?" that they make monsters look real and a threat since people are being petrified, but in the end it’s Velma behind everything, just to save egypt treasures for egypt people.
I absolutely loved these movies when I was a kid. I wore out the Zombie Island VHS and the end of Alien Invaders got me right in the heart. Great video dude.
Well, I was crying because I knew Shaggy and Scooby were falling in love with Crystal and Amber. And knowing how they're very upbeat when they aren't terrified, it made me cry to see them so sad at the end. I was a very sensitive kid back then. lol
I grew up with a mix of the classic Scooby Doo, What's new Scooby Doo, the live action films and these films. The nostalgia is strong and for how repetitive it was the atmosphere was second to none for me. I got back into it with Mystery Incorporated which I really enjoyed especially the extra personality added to characters especially best character Velma. Then I saw the latest series and lost all interest again.
They surprise-dropped their newest series they’ve been developing for a few years two weeks ago called “Scooby Doo and Guess Who”, I’d suggest checking it out, it’s very much like the original series and makes up for “Be Cool, Scooby Doo”.
Mystery Incorporated is vastly overrated, not to mention Be Cool, Scooby Doo gets some honor for making Daphne something other than just a damsel in distress
I want a legitimately terrifying R-rated Scooby-Doo animated feature film, with the visual style of the original 60-70's show, cooky surf music and the voice actors of the live-action film. Please?
That sounds sick, I'd watch that, they should really try to cash in on the older fanbase since so many people fondly remember the franchise and I'm sure many of their adult audience would enjoy something like that. Even a PG-13 one meant more for a teenage audience wouldn't be so bad
I suggest you watch Supernatural Season 13 ep 16, because in this episode the guys got sucked into a scooby doo world by a television and it is high key bloody r rated.
Scooby Doo on Zombie Island still reigns supreme imo for just how fresh and exciting the direction was looking. It's a shame it got lost for quite a few years until Mystery Inc.
These 4 movies were phenomenal. And to make sure it wasn't just my rose tinted nostalgia glasses skewing my perception i re-watched them all as a 25yr old adult manchild, and yes, still amazing.
I'm pretty sure "Help me! I've fallen and I can't get up!" Is just ment as a joke for us kids, since for some reason CN thought it was a good idea to show that Life Alert commercial unendingly to children.
I actually got a little emotional watching this. I remember watching all of these movies as a kid, and the whole bit about how walking away from them hit me hard. I've only recently started returning to the things that made me happy as a kid as a disillusioned 20 year old. I returned to my greatest hyperfixation, Godzilla, last year during lockdown and have been trying to find the things that make me happy now, and surprisingly? Not a whole lot has changed. I love your vids and this one somehow brought me to tears.
This was a video I didn’t know I needed so bad. It totally reopened a forgotten and somewhat golden time in my life, very similar to your own experience, and for that I thank you. Subscribed
@@clickycal yeah but didn't they close off Fred and Velma in doing so more or less I feel like they were just pushing that things and it didn't really work well.
I'm 26 years old now and I still, hands down, say the best scooby doo movies were these 4 movies, with Zombie Island being my absolute most favourite one because they experimented with having the gang being in a more dire, scary and serious situation. The zombie pirate in the pit with Scooby and Shaggy..... that scared me when I was little, but I still loved it. Hell, they play Scooby Doo on Zombie Island every year on TV around Halloween time, and every year I watch it just because of the nostalgia and how good it is compared to the recent movies. I really wish they would go back to the more serious tone again, we need more 'real' monsters in the movies.
i absolutely love zombie island and even though I’m now a teenager my opinion on this film has never changed I actually have one of the animation slides of Scooby and shaggy in the pit in the scene you were describing , although cyber chase will always be my favourite .
Some of the best songs came out of the Zombie Island movie. Amazing origin stories for the villains. And a clever take on the “man in the mask” trope. Honestly, an underrated classic.
I LOVED and was terrified of Zombie Island. The zombie designs were way creepier then any previous Scooby villain & it felt legitimately scary, as a child. Add in the cajun cat-people to boot
Ben: "Sarah wasn't a witch. She was a Wiccan." Velma: "Wicca didn't exist until about 300 years after her death." Ben: "Crap. You got me. I just want her spell book." Fred: "Well, that's another mystery solved, gang! Let's go home!"
Moral ambiguity. Its something i learned from the zombie island movie as a tween. Sometimes there are no real good or bad guys, just people who endured unfortunate situations by doing what they had to, to survive.
The wearcats werent wrong to kill the pirates..but they WERE wrong to lure and kill innocent people for their immortality. Had they just be content with their regular life spans and living their years in peace, they would have been fine, but their greed for living turned them from innocent survivors, into monsters themselves.
Zombie island was my favorite , such a gritty masterpiece lol surpassed only by legend of the phantosaur but that one isn’t really a classic movie yet .
The four Mook Animation films were the best Scooby Doo movies in my opinion. They managed to keep what made the original 60's cartoon funny while also adding a mature edge that wasn't overreaching. I can't think of too many reboots that can boast that kind of achievement. They're great films to remember now considering what's become of Scooby-Doo over the years. Great video by the way!
keilan_ -schultz Same, I’m 14 and I started watching tv like 4 years ago on cable so I grew up watching the original Scooby doo movies and episodes on VHS and they were amazing
When I watched witches ghost as a kid my sister was going through her goth phase, so I didn't even blink at the hex girls or anything they did, it never occurred to me that they were red herrings.
I wasn't Goth at the time but I loved those girls...now I think about it they may have been what started me down the path that ended with me going full Goth XD
I liked it a lot because of the whole concept of going into cyberchase, it's funny we have VR now and it's annoying, but as a kid it was such a cool concept to me, and it was also a big trend in the 2000s like it was in Fairly Oddparents, Teen Titans, and the ironically named Cyberchase is a whole show about it, I just really loved stuff like that as a kid, I also really loved all the different worlds like a real video game and how they met their past selves, but I always wondered why did past Shaggy have a red shirt lol?
Past Shaggy had a red shirt and blue jeans because it’s what he wore during the 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo and a trilogy of 80s movies (Boo Brothers, Ghoul School, Reluctant Werewolf). The other characters looks have been updated over the years, but the green t-shirt and brown pants have mostly stayed the same since they’ve never felt outdated. So when they had to come up with past Shaggy, they found the only other look he’d ever had. As a kid that had watched everything Scooby-Doo related that I could get my hands on, I always thought it was a neat little reference since the series and the movies with him in the red shirt weren’t very popular.
If you haven't watched the whole 2 seasons of mystery inc. I suggest you do. There's an overarching story, real danger, many supernatural things instead of only people in masks, and a good conclusion. Just thinking about it gives me chills, because of all the backstory about the conquistadors and the many different "mystery solving groups" that you learn about throughout the series. And also that parrot is terrifying.
Ellit Bo I definitely like the ending where you know just by watching the episode that the series is over, but also gives a suggestion that the whole series (spoiler alert for all of Mystery Inc.) WAS A DAMN PREQUEL FOR MOST OF THE FRANCHISE
I liked it. Butt the last time I saw it, I was like seven, so I thought it was weird and preferred what’s new scooby doo. I definitely prefer mystery inc now that I’m older.
I remember looking at the animation and thinking the show would be bad. Then I turned it on one day and saw a black woman with an Afro blasting a robot with a shot gun and I then thought "This show is better than I thought."
I Loved Those 4 Movies Scooby Doo On Zombie Island 10/10 Scooby Doo and the Witches Ghost 10/10 Scooby Doo and the Alien Invanders 10/10 Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase 10/10
I loved all 4 of these. I was a MAJOR Scooby doo freak as a kid. It was one of those “so obsessed it kinda defines you”. After Scooby doo was Harry Potter, then twilight, then Anita Blake vampire hunter (I started to like reading better lol)
Man, it's amazing that Frank Welker has been voicing Fred since he was in his early 20's. The guy is now 72 and he's still consistently been playing Fred. You have to respect that more than anything. I always loved these four movies, and it's great to see such a clever comprehensive done on them. Zombie Island in particular has some pretty damn spooky imagery, and I remember Alien Invaders really messed with my head, just cause the whole conspiracy aspect to it and the odd way the girl acted stuck out to me (only Shaggy is allowed to act like it's still the 1960's). Witch's Ghost was a lot of fun and that twist was always something I loved even as a kid (that and I thought the Hex Girls were cute); and seeing Scooby Doo get so meta with Cyber Chase was always really enjoyable, to me; since I also watched so many of the various television incarnations (including the classic show). Great vid, man. I find it interesting that you're from the UK and picked these four in particular, as I recall Boomerang would very often replay these four and only these four. Maybe you watched them in different ways, but for myself, Boomerang was how I saw them.
I think it's interesting how his voice hasn't aged much since the 60s. He still sounds so young. Yet, when Shaggy and Daphne had their old actors/actresses come back to reprise their roles, they sounded way too old to be in their late teens.
You did forget to mention that Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders was the last film to feature Mary Kay Bergman as the voice of Daphne before her death in November 1999 and how the film was dedicated to her memory, and how after that, Daphne would start being voiced by Grey DeLisle in Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase.
I loved these movies as a kid, and I decided to rewatch them recently, as an adult I still find myself loving all of them, even though they are a geared towards children. That's the beauty of these movies, they aren't so childish to the point where they are unwatchable as adults, these movies all aged very well and everyone who grew up watching them can still enjoy them today. Zombie Island is still my favorite
I like this video BUT I disagree that Scooby-Doo is only pandering their demographics now. And I specifically mean by using footage of Mystery INC 32:00 (2010) when making the pandering statement. I seriously doubt that anyone who actually watcHeD that series would disregard it so quickly. The lightning and animation of that show is gorgeous. And the storytelling is AMAZING and it pays homage to hannah-barbera and the films mentioned in this video. It’s a meaningful and charming tribute to everyone who watched Scooby-Doo as a child. If anyone misses the charm of these films I recommend Mystery Incorporated. It has a monster every episode aND an overarching mystery that spawns throughout the show. It gets dark as characters actually....die. but I strongly recommend it. It has a really big following. It has its faults but really do really check it out.
I watched it a lot when I was younger, and it really didn't do much for me. I do agree the animation is pretty underrated and it was probably just me being stubborn and not willing to except the new version so I'll definitely give it a second try.
Ironically, using Mystery Inc to say "it went commercial and lost the magic of the old" is off the mark considering it's one of the best send ups to Scooby, the horror genre, hanna barbara, and in general is probably the best iteration since the original series.
Exactly, if anything, the DTV movies after around maybe the mid 2000s are a better example, because they're kind of hit or miss from what I hear, with recycled ideas from various cartoon series becoming full on plots for films (meeting KISS, Adam West's Batman, etc.). Not to mention the ones from 2004-2009 feeling more like extended episodes of What's New, Scooby-Doo (mainly due to the artstyle) set in the DTV universe where the monsters are real rather than that show's continuity where the monsters weren't real. Best part of the films after that era of the DTV movies are the spot on cast reprising the roles they've had since 2002 (though post Be Cool that's sadly changed since Mindy Cohn has been replaced), with Matthew Lillard's Shaggy and adopting Derrick J. Wyatt's artstyle from MI mixed with the classic character designs.
It's quite ironic that you chose to use the intro to Mystery Incorporated for your saying that "its been commercial pandering and not something with more meaning" considering Mystery Inc was the show to break that mold and actually focus on writing an interesting, fully fleshed out over-arcing story line. Of course, you havent actually watched it, but I just thought it was funny that you chose that cut of the intro to be in that part of the video.
alex reyes ngl I genuinely enjoyed mystery incorporated. In terms of story it was the best scooby doo has ever had. I was quite disappointed that it ended after two series. Of course it ends happily (or somewhat) but still gets pretty dramatic in the last episodes. Unfortunately, the next scooby doo reincarnation that came out was beyond trash ☹️
@alex reyes basically, there was a mystery solving gang before mystery inc. With their bird mascot being the final villian of the series somehow making an extradimensional space to do something, the mystery inc. Win, BUT the timeline changes to one where the town has no more mysteries to solve so everyone except Mystery Inc. and a college professor remember the previous timeline.
Mystery Incorporated was pretty good in terms of quality but some aspects of it really frustrated me. The way they ruin Velma's character by making her jealous of the time Shaggy spends with Scooby.
This video made me little teary eyed to be honest. The nostalgia tapped into my childhood and brought up some good memories watching Cartoon Network and Boomerang and how bomb the shows were and the movies/specials around Halloween time.
Shag and Scoob: *after walking off, start to "puff, puff, pass" while also taking HUGE bong rips any time the joint isn't in your hand* Shag and Scoob: *Eat everything in sight* x10 Shag: "Like *cough* ZOINKS" Scoob "Rike *cough cough* *wheeze* Ruh *coughcoughcough* Ro-*coughcough*ROH*COUGHCOUGHCOUGH*" Shag and Scooob: *Giggle about mundane nonsense until they can no longer breathe - followed by eating another 24-decker sandwich*
Mystery Inc was not just the same old thing. While it had a villain of the week and unmasking, it also had a arching mystery to keep you coming back. Also, Franken Creepy took the traditions of the show and turned them on their ear. Maybe the coolest DTV in resent years.
When you realize what you have been missing, cause My aunt loved scooby doo and would always buy me the newest movie/show, but she died a couple years ago and I left scooby doo when that happened. Damn, looking at old scooby doo movies suddenly brings back really old memories (like when I was 3-4 years old)
I had goosebumps the whole time, just remembering how good I had it as a kid. No matter how tough things were, I had movies like those to keep me positive. This video was extremely well made and kept me invested from beginning to end
"Or maybe there's oil under the island!" Silly Fred, if that was the case then it wouldn't zombies flooding the island. It would be the US military all over the island.
@The King We invade and destabilize small oil rich countries all the time to install governments in them that will give us portions of their oil reserves.
Dont be harsh on him, "i've fallen and i can't get up" is actually an american catchphrase from the 80-90, to wich the film references. And he isnt american, so for him it strikes more like melodrama than just a comedic actuation.
@@DeathnoteBB "a well-known sentence or phrase, especially one that is associated with a particular famous person." also works associated with a particular brand or comercial. Catchphrases are memes usually yeh, after all memes as a concept exist since ancient greece :/
