“I have a strong feeling that Hitler and all of the Nazis did not want me to have grandchildren. So that’s an overriding, very strong feeling of triumph…of saying, you see? With all the sadness, there is nobody that has grandchildren like mine.”
An orphan of the Holocaust, Dr. Ruth Westheimer was born Karola Ruth to Julius and Irma Siegel on June 4, 1928, in Frankfurt, Germany.
Life was good for Ruth until November 1938 - that is when the Nazis banged on her family’s front door - shortly after Kristallnacht - and demanded that her father get dressed.
They took him to Dachau, and she would never see him again. He was later murdered in Auschwitz.
On January 5, 1939, Ruth joined 100 other children on a train to Wartheim, a Jewish Orthodox Children’s Home in Heiden, Switzerland.
Her mother and grandmother watched as the train departed - Ruth would never see them again either; they were also murdered in the Holocaust.
Dr. Ruth Westheimer went on to become an internationally acclaimed sex therapist.
She was 96 years old when she passed away.
