A conversation with Oliver Robinow, grandson of pianist Ilona Eibenschütz, and Piano Files host Mark Ainley - uploaded on her birthday, May 8.
Ilona Eibenschütz was a child prodigy pianist who studied with Clara Schumann and whose playing was adored by Brahms. Despite a very successful career, she retired around 1903 after her marriage, but lived until 1967. Her handful of official disc recordings from 1903 have been prized by collectors, and some private home recordings made when she was in her 70s and 80s reveal astounding individuality and glorious piano playing. There also exists a 1952 BBC talk in which Eibenschütz recounts tales of her time with Schumann and Brahms, interspersed with demonstrations at the piano.
This conversation with Robinow and Ainley explores Eibenschütz's life and music-making while also delving a bit more into her personality and how it relates to her music-making. The presentation features photographs, programmes, and autographs from the family collection, as well as some recorded examples.
The Piano Files also has an online article about Eibenschütz that can be read here:

This wonderful interview with Dr. Robinow is an indispensable account, providing important insights into Clara Schumann’s circle, in perpetuity. I’ve cherished for decades an unseemly crush on his grandmother, both as a person and as a musician, that’s led to a much deeper understanding of both Brahms and Schumann. Thank you so much for sharing it!

Her piano playing and style is the confirmation of what Thomas Mann said what music is about: "music is everything and its opposite". I have to say to Mark that she is the most marvelous surprise you have ever uncovered in your activity of music critic and historian!

I've searched for years for information about her, as she is part of my teaching genealogy. She taught my London teacher, Joan Davies, who had a moderately successful solo career in Britain and Canada. Joan Davies got her start during World War II playing on troop ships, so perhaps she studied with her in the late thirties. Davies told me stories about Clara Schumann, passed down to her by Ilona Eibenschutz. I never got the feeling that Joan Davies was her only pupil, so I'm surprised that his grandson thinks she never taught. I can hear some of Ilona's exuberance combined with a beautiful singing tone in Joan Davies's playing.

Very interesting to know! Her teaching likely would have been through contacts and word of mouth - did Davies never tell you how she came to meet Eibenschütz and where she had her lessons (her home, perhaps)? Are there recordings of Davies' playing? I'd certainly be interested to hear ...

32:50 I almost fell from my chair just now :) The speed and rubato truly add to the image of a bird; I can almost see it hopping around. Something missing in the more common "dreamy" (langzam und zart) playing of this peace.

A unique singing style informed by a strict pulse. She fulfills the Brahms directive to raise the melody from the emergent harmonies.

Brahms' interest in Clara Schumann's female pupils was more than musical, I highly suspect. I read of an incident where one cold morning, Brahms came into Clara's house or studio with some hot grog to be shared all around, a few of the young ladies being present, and Clara giving him the fish eye (or, "the look") in the process. Perhaps Clara took him aside and read him the riot act about this at some point. It's at least plausible. The incident is in either Marie Schumann's book or Adelina de Lara's autobiography. If anyone else has some other pertinent information, I would be glad to find out!

It's stunning indeed. The complete discs need a proper remastering and a complete commercial release, something that has never happened before, and that is the first priority...

@@ThePianoFiles YES. Maybe a bug could be put in Marston's or APR's ear about this. I had the Pearl set of de Lara's recordings, along with Fannie Davies' and IE's, but there's material here that was not included in that set. Every piano recording, commercial and otherwise, every interview with these three in one set, and any other Clara Schumann pupils that I may be unaware of. The Brahms/Schumann Legacy. Marston already did a great job with Carl Friedberg, and their next volume of Landmarks of Recorded Pianism is going to include de Lara in the Schumann Concerto. Eibenschutz was strikingly beautiful, and one can see the confidence and canniness in the eyes.

For Robinow to state that his grandfather was “a good enough violinist to have a Stradivarius” is a bit like saying he was a good enough driver to have a Ferrari. These things aren’t awarded on merit; they’re bought with cash.
