I'd say Destroyah. It's production values were very good for a Japanese movie of the time and Destroyah with his devilish look is one of my favorite Godzilla foes. I would love if the Legendary Monsterverse uses that monster as I would love to see him redone today with modern Hollywood effects. Also loved how its plot tied back to the original and wrapped up all the previous movies storylines in such a satisfying way. Probably Toho's best Godzilla movie after the original

What I really love about Heisei Godzilla is the character he was given. He's much more animalistic compared to his later Showa counterpart, but he had qualities that displayed that he was more sentient than he let on. I mean, come on, Godzilla defending Little Godzilla against Space Godzilla showcases that perfectly. Especially once he started shielding his adoptive son. Heck, there's also include the scene where he first interacts with Baby Godzilla. He tried so hard to not intimidate the little guy. And that's just a little bit compared to him in Godzilla v Destoroyah. But I still find it ironic that Ishiro Honda disapproved of the Heisei series. (Edit: By "later Showa" I meant to say the ShowaGoji during his later heroic phase where Godzilla was significantly humanized.)

I will agree with most of your assessment. Of the three series of Godzilla movies Toho made the second series is definitely the strongest for most of the reasons you describe such as it stronger continuity and the fact that Godzilla himself is well realized. Its worth noting that I would say the 2014 Hollywood Godzilla movie feels most inspired by the Heisei series as Godzilla similar to the Heisei series is portrayed as a force of nature neither good or bad. Something that is destructive in the way a hurricane is destructive but not driven by any malice. In terms of the complaint of the monster fights being nothing but beam wars that is mostly due to technological limitations. The Heisei Godzilla suit is much better looking than the ones from the original series but as a consequence the actors in those suits had limited mobility making more dynamic fights hard to due with the budget limitations of Japanese movies. Given how hot it must have been in those suits I gotta give those guys props for going through it

True, though I think one could at least argue that SMG2 had him dead to rights if it wasn't for Rodan.
@Shadowrulzalways
@Shadowrulzalways 5 лет назад
GojiBro Davidson Nah. Godzilla was just a vegetable. That’s not death. But I’m sure Godzilla’s regeneration factor would have regenerated him after a while. Also Rodan’s energy only enhanced it further giving him a more powerful regeneration factor. Allowing him to instantaneously regenerate any injury he suffers.
@AEsir_Goji
@AEsir_Goji 5 лет назад
@@Shadowrulzalways I'm arguing more that because Godzilla couldn't move at that moment, SMG2 had a chance to kill him if it moved fast enough;retract and refire its harpoons into Godzilla's skull and destroy the brain that truly matters.
@Shadowrulzalways
@Shadowrulzalways 5 лет назад
GojiBro Davidson No destroying the brain will not truly kill him. Godzilla’s cells can regenerate by themselves. Just one cell alone can grow back into a new Godzilla.This has been a confirmed fact for years. Godzilla can only be truly killed by destroying all his cells on a molecular or atomic level or by draining his energy completely. Which SMG isn’t capable of doing. Why do you think the oxygen destroyer and the meltdown killed Godzilla? Or why the Anti-nuclear energy bacteria nearly worked? LOL Seems you don’t know much about Godzilla.
@AEsir_Goji
@AEsir_Goji 5 лет назад
@@Shadowrulzalways I'm pretty sure that applied more to Godzilla 2000, not so much Heisei. He did have a healing factor, but it didn't appear to be as good as 2000, FW, or what GMK was apparently able to do. Course I'd say it's better than Showa, Shin, 2014, and especially Kiryu series Goji. Also, was this said in the movie, or in a magazine/interview? It's been a while since I watched it, but if it's in there, than I'll accept it.

Who hates on the Heisei series? Most consistent Godzilla, a continuity, a real ending, and a consistent tone, with some room for certain films to go lighter or darker, as needed. All the films are upper tier among the Godzilla films, with the exception of Spacegodzilla (easily the worst of the bunch). Yeah, the fights are less like brawls. It is probably more realistic that way. Let's be honest, Godzilla's body isn't exactly well-suited to hand-to-hand combat. LOL

Bro you're completely right about this being the best era. Best stories, best effects, best acting, best music. Don't get me wrong the first Mecha Godzilla movie will probably always be my personal favorite just because its the first Godzilla I ever saw as a kid so the nostalgia is strong but this era is objectively better. The previous era was outright silly with their fights played off for laughs. This era took itself completely seriously and that elevates it.
@LordVaderTyrannus
@LordVaderTyrannus 5 лет назад
I agree with a lot here, Heisei is my favorite, and my all time four favorite Godzilla movies are Mechagodzilla II, King Ghidorah, Destoroyah, and Biollante. The complaint about the fights is something I've never understood. Except for SpaceGodzilla, I think the films had plenty of physical combat. I liked how whenever they fought physically, there's weight to their attacks, and they fight as if they're ferocious giant creatures. There's plenty of memorable moments; King Ghidorah strangling Godzilla, Godzilla lifting, throwing, and tail slamming Mechagodzilla, the whole Rodan fight, Godzilla's fight with Battra Larva, Destoroyah's horn katana and prehensile tail, and a lot more. The bulkiness of the suits made Kawakita come up with creative ways to have the monsters fight up close. Mechagodzilla was also a beam and missile spammer in the Showa series, so that complaint about the Heisei one is very hypocritical. I also do thoroughly enjoy beam battles when under exciting direction (which I find in Omori and Okawara's films).

Heisei Godzilla is definitely my favorite design. Some of the best movies too. I just wish it had gone on longer. Edit: I think the single thing that made this Godzilla so iconic was the fact that, as you said, he got to keep his edge while still remaining the hero to root for. And since he is presented as a force of nature instead of a conflicted human like batman or superman, it doesn't spoil his charachter.

Hesei was definitely my childhood...for years they were the newest Godzilla movies I could get. After Godzilla 2000....Megaguirus and GMK didn't debut in the USA until premiering on the sci-fi channel in 2003. So there was a 3 year gap where G2K was the newest film in the US, and there were 3 mythical movies released in Japan that nobody got to see......and the Heisei series was as modern as the movies got. The continuity and heavy screen-time of the monsters, as well as the colorful palettes where vivid laser blasts were spammed constantly just made them aesthetically pleasing to my young mind. I had a ton of the Trendmasters toys as well :)

Your intro in this video almost perfectly described my own introduction to the Heisei films. My parents bought me the Official Godzilla Compendium which I re-read so often I practically memorized it at one point, and I saw the still images and read about them only to be disappointed not to have them. The only difference between you and me is that I convinced my parents to record most of them on blank VHS tapes during a marathon on AMC's MonsterFest, complete with intros by Roger Corman. We only bought professional copies of the ones we missed, lol. Although I love entries from all three eras, I've always thought the Heisei era was the best, with Godzilla vs King Ghidorah being my personal favorite, even if it is rife with plot holes and continuity errors. That's why I'm anxious to hear Blunova's thoughts on them, because he constantly refers to them as disappointing. The only one he's analyzed in detail is Destroyah, and admittedly, he did bring up some great points and made me re-think my own opinion of that particular film. He has yet to elaborate on the others, though.

The heisei series has consistency, something that the showa and millennium series can't say. It all feels connected. Though that could be seen as a negative that the movies aren't as out there, I really enjoy these movies.

I was a kid in the 90's, and a lone Godzilla fan throughout all that time - I knew no one else who shared my fandom without my introducing them to it until I was in my 20s. You're absolutely right about the amount of Godzilla paraphernalia that was available at the time. I still have my battered copy of the Official Godzilla Compendium around somewhere, and I recognized every piece of merchandise you showed in this video, much of which I had received as Christmas gifts. Between all that stuff and TNT's MonsterVision the 90's was a fantastic time to be a kid/preteen and love Godzilla and monster movies. Also, imo Godzilla vs Biollante is easily the best movie from the Heisei series, with 1984 and vs Destroyah behind it.

I’ve gotta agree with you OP, Heisei is my favorite too. I grew up watching these, and my favorites in the series (Space Godzilla, Versus Destroyah, and Versus King Ghidorah) are from this era as well. My great great great grandma made a point to record these for me every time they played on Sci Fi back in the day, and I’ve still got the VHS tapes floating around. I've heard the comments about not having enough physical combat in these movies. I don't agree with them. Why? Because all of these kaiju Know they have beam attacks. And as these kaiju are mostly basically just huge animals in some ways, wouldn't it make sense for them to attack their opponents or defend themselves in the safest and most efficient way? Any one of these creatures would be freaking out at the possibility of some other huge creature getting close enough to rip their throat out. Why not spam beam attacks and hope your opponent dies from that before they get close enough to cause physical damage and possibly kill you? I honestly never understood why Godzilla, King Ghidorah, or any other beam toting kaiju in the Showa era rarely used their beams. Just didn't make sense to me. Why not try and kill your opponent from far away? It's a no brainer. Duh. lol.

Very good video. I can’t say whether I think it’s the best, but it’s certainly the most consistent and iconic era of Godzilla. You’re right in that they got his approach of villainous anti-hero down perfectly, as well as his personality, and the use of classic and introduction of new monsters is a near perfect balance. That said my issues start when the movies begin to be produced and released yearly, and the high water mark of SFX set by G84 and Vs Biollante trend down to more....I guess power rangers level, sparks flying and day-bright sets all over the place. Still I think it’s not just a great era but one of the most important for cementing Godzilla’s iconic status.

I've been a fan since I was a tyke and discovered Godzilla on channel WUTV Buffalo 29, which we got north of the border in Toronto. The channel on weekends right after Saturday and Sunday morning cartoons, at noon switch between Kung-Fu and action movies to the original series of Godzilla and other Kaiju films. I loved them all. I have a special love for what is critically considered one of the worst films of that time, Godzilla versus Megalon, with Jet Jaguar. That was my favorite film aside from the Raymond Burr version of the original movie. I knew they were guys in suits even though I was about 3 when I first saw them, but I was still awed by the backstory. Saturday Night at the Movies was a Canadian show hosted by Elwy Yost who gave the full background on the story of Godzilla and prefaced the version as the American one and not the original edit, which at that time wasn't available to western audiences. Thise were fond memories as I grew up and when Godzilla 1984 came out, which I believe is the beginning of the Heisei era, maybe, my interest was renewed. But the other releases didnt follow 1984 and I only saw images in magazines and the odd news clip, like when Godzilla was rumored to die in Vs Destroyah. It wouldn't be until much much later, like within the last 10 years where I've managed to watch the majority of films if not all of them. I've seen Shin Godzilla once and it's hard to find or even watch online. But I still Love the series. I even enjoyed the Zilla American version. Sure it wasn't Godzilla Godzilla but I was Entertained by it. I had a good time in the theater. I appreciated the lengths they went to hide the design literally until Opening Day..a feat that would be Very difficult to do today. The Child or Baby Yoda being the surprise kept tightly under wraps Succesfully until its actual debut, endearing the character through mere surprise alone. Besides my childhood Love of Vs Megalon which I still watch and enjoy is getting kinda it's own sequel in the upcoming Netflix Animated offering that stands apart from the Godzilla Earth series. And this one has a new version of Jet Jaguar in it so I'm Totally Stoked at 47 years old. I've favorite story bits, others less so. And I honestly really enjoy the new western Godzilla films with Vs King Kong soon to come out, King of the Monsters was fantastic. There's a proportionality to the new western films that carry forth from the Original Japanese film, the Force of Nature in Response to human activity aspect, has grown Respectfully from that original intended source. Where the Heisei series goes the route many a grounded anime does and gets very esoteric, spiritual, or even outlandish in the inclusion of alien invasion. Proportionate of course to aliens invading from the previous era, but with a more anime influence in their design. While the updated technology amd film effects improved the quality and capabilities of what could be made and filmed..there was an aspect more Power Rangers /Super Sentai Goofiness to it that ran counter to the realistic barrier for Suspension of DISBELIEF to allow movie Magic to work for Me. Shin Godzilla goes back to the original formula blending nuclear with the tsunami tragedy event so effectively that it's just as reverential as it's original predecessor had been in 1954. There's a bright future for Godzilla I think and I'm all for the ride.
