I had the Apache 77 Seneca green model. I purchased it new from K-mart back in the day for $89.99. I was a few bucks short of a 10/22. I sold the green 77 gun many years latter for $300. Finally purchased the 10/22. I think I still owe that Apache money. I shot more rounds down that barrel than all other guns I own to this day combined. That 's some tough plastic as well. I fell down a ravine as a boy and used my gun to protect my face and body. It took some major hits. I could not believe there was not a scratch on it. It should have broke into pieces , but nothing. After untold rounds I did a complete disassembly to properly clean it. Reassembling was a nightmare. I put all the parts in zip lock bags and gave it to the gunsmith. He put it back together cleaned and lubed it for 20 bucks. He had compassion on a little boy. He told me get back to shooting son. The only reason I sold it was I never wanted to even try and assemble that rifle again.

Have had one for more years than I can remember. It's one of the guns that I like so much it sits pristinely in the safe as I am afraid that if it fails it can never be repaired! A true work of manufacturing/marketing/ genius, using synthetics long before the G gun got all the credit as a visionary creation.

Hi Edward - the longer it sits the more it is worth - pristine one's are scarce. On the other hand, they hardly ever break. And you're right - they were way ahead of the other plastics and the Nylon is better still, anyway.

Although I'm not a huge fan of the Remington Nylon 66, your shortened "Mannlicher" example struck me as a really cool. And you're totally right about these 66's going up in price over the past few years. I guess the nostalgia effect is happening. Thanks for posting!

When I was a boy, the only rifle my father owned was a Remington Model 550-1 that he bought as a young man. He used that rifle to teach me gun safely and it was the first gun I ever fired. I still own a 550-1, though sadly it isn't my father's. It is one of my favorite .22 rimfire rifles. I really appreciate your videos.

Another interesting thing about the 550-1 was that it has a "power piston", which some people would call the floating chamber. The power piston was a unique design that allowed it to shoot the shorts. Something you don't find in other 22 rifles.

I have a couple Remington Nylon 66 rifles, they are fantastic, it's too bad Remington stopped making them, but they're apparently very complex internally, so I understand why they didn't produce them for very long.

Had to laugh when you talked about taking the 66 apart. I once decided to take mine apart but couldn't find the manual. How hard could it be I thought...so I got after it. As I recall, it was filthy under that receiver cover and after cleaning I put it back together, cocked it....and nothing. After a couple more attempts involving disassembly and assembly I figured out that some piece (I'm as far from a gunsmith as they come) flipped as I originally removed the cover and when I flipped it back and held it until the receiver cover did that job, it went together and worked. I've fired many rounds since then, but I must admit I've never taken that cover off since! I mean I'd be totally lost if I screwed something else up. May be dirty as hell under there but it still ticks like a Timex!

: ) : ) : ) You're smarter than me! I had such major trouble. I was making assumptions about how things must have been aligned and placed and my assumptions were wrong. You mention feed problems with the nylon moel with the magazine. I bought one at a garage sale missing the magazine missing. At the time i could purchase a 10 rd magazine but it turns out it was an aftermarket plastic magazine originally designed for another Remington and it required a little filing to fit the bylon model. Never could get it to quit dropping off after firing. Ive jusr ordered a remington made metal 5 rd magazine. Im thinking 5 rd metal mat have been what it came with

My first real gun (as in not a bb/pellet gun) was a Remington 550-1. It was my dad's dad's gun and we still have it. Fun to shoot, very accurate with open sights. Somehow it doesn't seem right to put a scope on a Remington 550-1.

TERRIFIC! Many years ago , probably 99'? I bought a 597 assuming it would equal the accuracy of my 1970 Nylon 66. My first purchase , still have the receipt, I was 12?. NOT EVEN CLOSE! The new magazines did not even work, I had two of them. Sent it back to Remington in Madison NC, just up the road from me. They put a scope on it, shot match ammo, sent me the targets. I assume they were excited about the 2 inch groups at 25 yards. Good heavens, the 66 easily does one inch or less with cart ammo and iron sights!. Sold it as soon as I could, 25 bucks! As always a terrific video!

Thanks ed - those 66s....my goodness how excellent. I can't not smile when I'm shooting them! The shortened one is my current favorite. They were known as Apache Black and Mohawk Brown. The Nylon 66 series of rimfire rifles could give one fits if disassembled. They rarely developed problems, but as I learned from gunsmithing school they can be quite the pain to reassemble. The " innards" are all springs and sheet metal stampings laid out in a nylon receiver and covert by a sheet metal cover. The guts are like the old kids game Mouse Trap in that every piece is dependant on, and works off of each other. There are many C - clips to hold the parts in place. And the crazy assortment of oddly shaped springs with their hooked ends and dual functions is enough to drive you nuts. But once the design and function of this system is understood it helps considerably with putting them back together. Their are tricks to doing so involving the sequence of assembly and the positioning of the support posts and C - clips. Working from the rear forward also helps. The feed system and feed guide are tricky and getting it and the ejector positioned correctly goes a long way towards not having feeding, extraction and ejection problems. More than any other gun the Nylon 66 series is responsible for more " bag o gun " parts coming by the gunsmiths bench. There is not much inside that resembles a traditional rifle. But they work, and they work well !!! And last a long time. After production ceased and the rifle was absent from dealers shelves, the company CBC in Brazil started making a very faithful reproduction of the rifle . This started a second surge of interest in this firearm from all those that never got around to buying one and all those that came after Remington stopped production. The Nylon 66 has become a classic and a collectors item due to all the variations and models. You can say " they don't make em like that anymore " and it would be true as the 66 is nearly indestructible.

Hi Kennard - thanks for being here. I haven't covered the Sears & Roebuck yet - of the 51 FN or the Mauser 18. Thanks for the suggestions : )
@servicerifle16
@servicerifle16 5 лет назад
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I have both, the FN is probably my most elegant rifle of my collection, I've handled a number of pre-64 Winchester M70s and I think it comes pretty close in quality, surprising to me for a Sears gun, mine even came with a vintage scope(unsure on brand at the moment). The Mauser M18 might not be your usual cup of tea as I think its Mauser's attempt at entering the budget bolt action rifle market to compete with the Remington 700, Ruger 77 and others around the $600 range. Its your typical pushfeed, plastic stock with rubber stock inlays, scopes only with no irons, detachable mags(supposedly can use Sauer 100 mags but haven't tried). I don't think they're all that common in the US or at least when I got mine because I bought it back in 2018 when they first came out and I had to wait for one to be imported from Germany.

@Joe_Blo
@Joe_Blo 3 года назад
The "Mohawk 10C" is just renamed Nylon 77. The 10C was sold at various general merchandise stores like Kmart, rather than the 66 & 77 that were mostly sold at sporting goods & gun stores. The box had the name "Mohawk" in huge letters, as if it were a toy. Remington even sold Mohawk branded .22 ammo. It was essentially a marketing gimmick. The price was still cheap because the manufacturing equipment was amortized by then. Now that Remington is defunct (2021), there's a extremely slight possiblity the Nylons could be re-manufacturered again. But they have competition from new, and cheaper plastic .22's. The Winchester Wildcat is only $229 but goes for $199 on sale. The $50 price (rounded off) for a Nylon 66 in 1962, adjusted for inflation would be $450 in 2021. Would it sell well for that? That's kinda steep. The originals carry a nostalgia-based premium price. The kids that dreamed of owning one in the 60s are retired and can afford to splurge and pay premium price for an original they'd hang on a wall, but would not likely even desire a "Made in Whoknowswhere" knockoff. However, I think they'd buy a whole lot of them for their grandchildren. But only if it were priced in the range of the Ruger 10/22. A lot of kids wanted one of them too, but they've been available continuously since 1965. And affordable. My base carbine was $129 new in the late 80s which is around $320 today. So, $350-$400 for a Nylon 66? Would you pay that? For a gift? It's less than an XBox. But, tiimes have changed. A young teen wandering the woods alone with a rifle today might find themselves suddenly surrounded by a swat team. That we used to be so free & independent as young teens is what's doubled the price being paid for Nylon 66 models in just the past year alone. That, and a few other reasons. Personally, I'd buy a new Model 12 bolt action if they made one today to shoot caps, shorts & bird shot at varmints & vermin, and targets. For $300. I'd like to have the 76 lever action too.

Is there a "10C" molded in your magazine? If you see a "77" that would explain your "poor" 99% reliability. Lots of 77 magazines have been shaved to fit the 10C and they work fine most of the time.

Took my nylon apart one time, very difficult to get back together!! Decided after that the only cleaning that it would get is to hold the bolt open and brush the bore and blow the ejector port out with compressed air. That worked for many, many years, but then it stated malfunctioning. There's lots of youtube vids on how to disassemble/assemble now, so it's not so bad.

Oh my,....memories,...I was thinking of my first girl friend who bought one for me as a birthday gift. This rifle is a chrome plated Nylon 66 with the black nylon stock. She bought this rifle back in the early 1960's but I can remember the exact date, ( but I sure do remember her LOL !!!) I still have this rifle today but alas, it has been damaged. I loaned it to a family member who had it for a couple of years, and when I got it back the stock was badly cracked. I could have cried! I have tried all over to find a replacement stock, but no luck yet. The Mohawk 77 magazines SUCK. The 77 fails to feed so often that mine stayed in the sleeve. The point of impact is nearly impossible to set. I crafted a 10 shot steel magazine for my Nylon 77 Mohawk using the spring and follower from a Savage mag. Now it shoots well. I also attached the rear sight to the barrel. Now it shoots with pin point accuracy. Did I ruin the collector vale of my rifle? Yes but I use it for varmint control around my farm.

There's a minty 552 at a local shop, if it's still there Tuesday I'll put some money down on it. "Carbine" Williams has patents on it, the floating chamber. As I recall the Colt Ace .22 1911 pistol also uses the floating chamber. I must admit I just can't get excited about the Nylon 66 rifles, maybe I'm too old.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns

Hope you get the 552 - I usually don't like plastic guns either - but there is something about the 66. Thanks for the reminded about the floating chamber in the Ace - I remembered when you wrote! : )

My maternal grandmother bought a Nylon 66 for herself with an inexpensive Tasco scope. After she passed, it went to my mother. I got to use it quite a bit when I was in middle and high school. It hit anything I aimed it at. So lightweight, never jammed. One of those guns that almost feels like cheating when you use it because it works so well. My folks have it now. It will stay in the family.

The floating chamber on the 550 was a Peterson invention. The colt 1911 in .22 also had a floating chamber to cycle the heavy slide. I was told that the bolt on the 550 came back with authority so you didn't want to get your fingers in the way.

The 550-1 is one of my favorite rifles of all time. I've had several over years. Like the Nylon Series, you need to be a semi-pro to pro level gun guy to work on them. I can do the 550-1 and even I am intimidated by the Nylon. BTW: that Nylon Carbine is one of the sexist rifles I re seen in my life. HOLD ON TO THAT ONE, Sir!!!!!

That is beautiful and interesting with the short barrel. I have a question for you that's off subject. I have a friend with a pretty large collection of guns that he's collected over a long time plus he got some from his father. He Is on disability now and he's needing to sell some. The one that I am really interested in is a 7 mm Mauser dated 1924 it has a full stock and is absolutely beautiful looks like new. He can't really tell me what it is exactly because he inherited it from his father. He sent me a couple of pictures I'd like to show it to you I'm thinking about buying it and I want to be fair. I'd like your opinion on what it is exactly and what it's worth if you don't mind? He's a longtime friend he broke his back two times within two years on the job now he's struggling. I find the 7 mm very interesting to I've thought about buying that before my father had one when I was a kid and when he passed my stepmother would never let me have it. So I've always kind of wanted one anyway. Your help would be greatly appreciated . Thank you

Oh yes DC - I had 2. These are so beautifully finished. Mine were made in Italy and one was blonde wood and the other was dark with a lot of figure. My Chinese friend saw them, handled them and offered $2400. for the pair. They were spotless. Naturally one wants to help a friend. The spaces their absence left in the rack remain open - I still have not found .22 semis that perfect. Thanks for reminding me. Better to have owned and lost then never to have owned at all. : )

I heard something about rusty screws are a sign that the wood is a salt gun, I don't remember where the salt comes from though
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 5 лет назад
Good comment. This one is from standing in damp at some point. Your point is interesting though - Browning used walnut that had been held in salt water and then delivered to a mill and then those blanks were used for Browning gunstocks. I've owned a few of these. When you take the action out the barrel and action are usually rusty from being in contact with the salt wood. Anything below the stock line is usually rusty. They clean up easily and the the wood can be washed and re-sealed - but it is a bit of work and makes the guns not worth much. : (

I don't know the whole story, but I heard Japan bought a lot of logs from north america and they stored them in salt water bays as a preservative......I wonder if it is true and if they were lost or contaminated by the fukushima problem/tsunami

Very, VERY interesting Nylon 66! That’s a professional looking job on the shortened barrel, (I wonder what the legality is to do that in Canada?). Not that I would do that...I’d have to ask a friend to! Thanks for sharing this one, I’m here-shaking my head in disbelief-because I turned my nose up at the thought of a plastic stocked rifle from the '60s! They lack the stud to which I could attach a bipod and I didn’t expect it to be very accurate @ what...~5 pounds? I’ve got a really nice semiauto 22lr in my 10/22, so my search is for an Izhmash Model 7-2, (when are you coming to Victoria? If I transfer the funds to you could you please pick one up for me? Ha!😂). Thanks, brother. 🙏
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 5 лет назад
Hello : ) Something about those 66s - there's got to be a way to get them to work for you - they're probably lighter than the bipod. Super accurate - at least mine are. I can pick up anything for you my friend and we can study the gun together when I come over and if you like you can pay then - if not - I've got another gun : ) I'm not sure when I'll get out your way - asap though - love it over there. All the best.

More than 3" was removed from the factory 18.5" barrel to align with the forearm. A short-barreled rifle with a barrel less than 16" has to be registered with the ATF and $200 USD tax paid.
