Remo Williams: The Prophecy (TV Pilot - 1988)

This pilot capture the relationship between Chiun and Remo from the books excellently, better than the film. Too bad there is only a pilot.

The reason why this didn't get picked up was because its premiere broadcast was interrupted by Reagan's farewell speech on 8/15/1988 and only the last 15 minutes were shown on TV, and that was the only broadcast until 2009

It would be hard to replicate the paperback Remo Williams' actual combat style. In the paperback series, Remo Williams moves and strikes with the inhuman speed of the fictional vampire. His fights are always lethal where he ends up killing his adversary with bone-crushing, throat smashing blows. There was only one time where Remo Williams was concerned about losing. In one paperback book, he faces off against a big black man trained in Chinese Preying Mantis style. Remo reflects that Preying Mantis Style was intended primarily for smaller men to compensate. It's now being employed by a big, powerful man. Remo reflects further that if the black man can get past Remo's defenses, then Remo would be dead with one blow. So while the black man's onlooking friends tease him about looking faggy with his bent, preying mantis hands, Remo knows this man is a deadly adversary. Fortunately, the black man doesn't slip through Remo's defense and he kills his preying mantis foe with a crushing head blow.

Due to President Ronald Reagan's speech on the night of 15th August 1988, ABC made the decision to join "Remo Williams" in progress, rather than start it from the beginning, which would have delayed the network's 9 pm broadcasting. As a result, only the last 15 minutes of the 60-minute program were seen.

This pilot would make a great companion to a "special edition" DVD of the 1985 film. It has much of the same tone and borrows the excellent music from the film, though Jeff Meek pales in comparison to the legendary Fred Ward. Though Roddy McDowell is near perfect and at par with Joel Grey. Too bad we only got to see a pilot. The opening credits show scenes not seen in this episode, so perhaps there were more produced.

ARE YOU KIDDING!!!!!!!!!! This was a great pilot (for 1988)! Why it wasn't picked up is a mystery to me. This captured the essence of the “Destroyer” books and the Chiun/Remo relationship. I'll be watching this again. It was actually better then the movie. If there's any flaw here it's that Remo was too young and hip. But he did maintain the Remo attitude (though I wish he would have said “that's biz” some where in there). Sure, looking back some 26 years it seems hokey, but at the time it was was a unique and very well done concept. Here's hoping some one with real insight to the characters and story give it another try.

Hello Scott. You are of course right about Chiun. The original film did get his entire look wrong. The movie also altered the circumstances over which Chiun and Remo met. If a remake were ever made I would hope that some of those original mistakes could be corrected as I'm a firm believer in sticking as close to the source material as possible, especially as the books were a pretty good read. (By the way, for anyone who doesn't know what Scott and I are talking about, here's a link). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Destroyer_(novel_series)

Ok, so this is obviously after Mac died and the whole Grove thing. When Grove died, apart from the "Mystery Men" (Remo and Chun) being on base, Grove's death looked like an accident, Gasoline caught fire and exploded due to wreck, all people died. In this, he uses a lighter, some gunpowder(?), and turns all the gas on. Chun said Master of Sinanju make murders look like perfect accidents. The LAFD is going to call Arson on this! Everybodies bad-mouthing Roddy McDowell, I think we could have found a few Asian actors to play the part of Chiun, too. But WTF was Joel Grey doing that was so important he couldn't reprise the role. If they ever decide to do a remake or sequel of the movie, I'd definitely go!

Television is the wrong medium for these stories. Warren Murphy, the man who brought us the screenplay for Lethal Weapon II (the best of all of them in my opinion), meant for much of these to be satirical. Given that this is using 1988 technology for effects, we can lower the bar a bit. The latest word is that "The Destroyer" will be done in the not too distant future by Shane Black - www.darkhorizons.com/news/33528/shane-black-to-direct-the-destroyer Hopefully, someone will be able to do these stories justice.

This is fun to see, i watched it when it aired, unfortunately I statted reading the Destroyer in 1974, and I own every issue, plus the assassin handbooks and the legacy books with Remo's kids. The people that made the movie and this pilot were apparently completely clueless as to the mysticism, social satire and humor of the source material. Luckily we will get another chance to see it as a movie. Although Hollywood has stolen the premise of the cockney westerner trained by the inscrutable master years ago.

Judy Landers sure made a name for herself appearing in shows half-naked. That's what I like about her.

Wow, i can see why this series never got picked up. The guy playing Remo was annoying. It's like the writers wrote him to be a wacky neighbor in a sitcom.

I agree. I like Chiun. I don’t care if this Remo dies. He’s awful.

The Remo actor appears part Asian...correct or if I’m wrong but wasn’t it implied in the movie that Chiun may be Remo’s father?

Good GOD. So glad this one never took off, that I know of. Jeffrey Meeks plays a much better lead man than a hapless patsy.

Roddy McDowell was good as Master Chun in the 1988 Remo Wms TV Pilot ! Yes, The New Actor os Remo Williams was a poor choice ! Since Fred Ward is too old, or deceased, whom else would be a good choice ?

Joel Grey does it better than Roddy McDowall but he still did a damn good job. Now Jeffrey Meek did it better than Fred Ward
