I think the original eyeballs had a touch of Demonic to them. they looked like a Goat's eye, so it looked like a supernatural entity rather than a lovecraftian one. also, i think it would be better if you had a simple billboard (a quad polygon) inside the eye with a "Infinitude" texture. there is no way to convey that with just geometry i believe. you would need a shader material to add to this still polygon inside the eye.

These eyeball designs very fittingly remind me of the Leucochloridium parasyte. It infests and bulges the eye stalks of snails with colourful pulsating stripes to attract and infect birds. These designs capture the exact uncanny and disturbing feeling that the snail parasyte's look does. It's not just that the bulging eyes look so alarming and out of place, nor that you know that this is the result of some foreign inhabitant, but that the snail, and in this case the human, continues behaving almost how you'd expect. The subtle curled smiles of these characters and the way the indented eyes seem to follow you further this feeling. Who's smiling? The entity, or the remnants of a completely maddened host. I like to think that the physical look of even these eldritch inhabitants, and the behaviour of their hosts, serve an evolutionary purpose - like that of the Leucochloridium.

Touch of infinity. This whole phrase in combination with the whole thing about eyes, really made me think immediately infinite eyes. And the closes to infinity any eye gets to are those owned by insects and crustaceans. You could take that super geometric eye pattern they have and smash it on the surface of the outside of the eyes. Saaay the eyes of a dragonfly. The dark reflective surface on the outside would be massive contrast to the glow within. I would revert the glow direction btw. Put the brightest part far within, it would look like the ridges glow, and as they get closer and closer to each other the human eye cannot detect the distance. It is just intense glow far from what we can see. Like the sun. It has detail, but fuck if we can see it without getting blind lol. As always love seeing your progress with this!

love the new model of the eyeballs. they look more "neutral" and not like anything specific we've seen before. the old model was cool but i'm sure everyone had some sort of connection to this definitely-not-an-infinity-sign-shape. the new one leaves so much space for you to put interpretations in others heads. also it was so incredibly cool how it felt like the eyes were following you even tho they didnt move at all.

Until now, the old eyeballs are more iconic and look better. they can be on a poster by themselves and I would know it's a teaser for the sequel :p Other than that, I think that you can set up this infinity loop you're going for with "Parallax Occlusion Mapping", while keeping the geometry a simple sphere. You can set it up in Blender or in Unreal (complex in both, more complex in Blender).

maybe the holes are a little too big, smaller ones would be creepier. right now it looks kinda cartoony but interesting idea nonetheless.

the best part about making monster eyes is that you can choose to leave out parts of the anatomy, because it makes the creature less canny

Make sure that you are using glow for EVEE. Emission without glow is trash, I don't know why it comes off by default...

There is a ceramic artist by the name of Matthew Chambers Ceramics, he creates these circular stacked objects. I think it would be a good source of visual inspiration to look at them!

Looking really cooool! Thank you for these it's helpful and interesting. Have you considered putting another sphere around the eyeball, mostly transparent with a lot of shine to make a cornea (jelly round the eye) kind of look? Just a thought, something I keep thinking about tackling when I make an eye but perhaps thats better done with textures and stuff, I duno :D, cool eye concept regardless!

I think this stuff should be more subtle. So and idea would be that their pupils would have this effect of infinite circles and if not that, maybe something “critical” that would help the player distinguish the witnesses from real people. You know like in a movie the main character makes a friend and after a while based on something like tattoos or the shape of some body part discovers that his friend is actually one of the enemies/monsters

Might I suggest a glowing pupil in the back among the darkness? I think it’d add to the perspective of the eyes looking directly at you

What if you include both the infinite-symbol pupil shape, but also make the hole have something like those "infinity table" effect, with the edges repeating with infinite depth inside ? (using some shader effect, or procedural shader, or something of the sort)

No idea if it is possible, but what would be really cool is if the opening in the eyeball would pulsate a little, or maybe open and close as if they are blinking instead of the eyelids. Maybe even asymmetrical in rythm.

Hey Boro! I'm getting to this video kind of late, but I was thinking that it would be cool to make the insides of the eyeballs bigger than the outside. I remember see a tutorial that could to that, somewhere. So like the eyeballs are small on the outside, but on the inside they re these tunnels that stretch into infinity... I don't know. Love how everything looks so far!

you can make portals in unreal engine, similiar to the non-euclidean stuff people make in blender. which means you could stare into the witnesses eyes and see something a lot bigger inside them. i dont know how great that is for performance, but it could be a cool experiment for a cutscene or something.

as long as you’re not rendering actual geometry within the “portal” you can use a parallax shader instead and it should be more efficient than the actual eye geometry he uses in the video

A touch of infinity? It makes me think of something like cosmic horror, closer to lovecraft and bloodborne. If this thought is correct then I think you could use more non-Euclidean shapes, or just standard shapes, for example the inside of the eyes could be pentagons instead of simple circles, with slight shades of different colors, this would bring a clear strange feeling, but I don't know if I'm on the right topic that you imagine 😅 Tell me what you think and if you accept future ideas, I'm good at giving ideas

In this demo level that I'm working on for now, there will be only two active family members as Witnesses. In other levels, there will be all kinds of different people converted

Is there a way to get a texture to not accept light at all? I assume there is, which could be a good way to make the back of the eye look like a void.

imo the old eyeballs looked otherwordly and scary, even from a distance you could tell something was wrong, and close up they look horrifying. the new ones just look like normal glowing eyeballs.

If you're willing to do some shader magic in UE, you could set up a truly infinite pattern for the centre of the eye by giving it a parallax/portal effect using a cubemap or something similar. I think the finished design at the end looks a bit too bright. Of course, I'm looking at this through the lens of 'what type of eyes scare me" so this is subjective. I do like the horizontal irises though! Like goats and I think horses and frogs?

You can create a default startup file in blender with all your options ticked or selected, like that append-link thing.

Yeah that's true. Doesn't help if you work in a team with others that don't have that done though. Each new file from someone is always full of dangers/bummers like that. All kinds of settings are saved within the project file
