How am I ever supposed to leave Prince Rupert? The more I explore, the more I find. Everything that I found this adventure was completely by accident, and I still have some awesome locations planned before I leave. The old dam was really neat to see, but to me, that sauna was 10 outa 10 cool. I am also so excited about the boat motor. I knew i would find something I could afford, but I didnt expect it to be quite that awesome. I cant wait to get that baby out on the ocean and do some real fishing. Thank you to all of the generous folks in PR so far. It is rare I am so welcomed into a community. So many people recognizing the MoHo and stopping to say hi. Much love to you all.
I am definitely getting tired of the constant rain - which I was warned about - but it sure makes things beautiful.
If you enjoy the channel, please consider joining the Patreon team, it really helps me a lot.

The dam supplied water to the pulp mill. We kids used to walk on top of the smaller wooden pipe before the big one was built. My dad worked 15 years at the pulp mill on Watson Island (on the way to Port Edward). Mom managed the comptroller office; they met at the mill.

So glad you found the old dam! In the 60s and 70s my dad used to work for the Pulp mill in Port Edward and part of his job was to maintain that dam. He would take us there all the time when we were little. I went back there last August with my mom and siblings after being gone since 1979. I wish we knew about the sauna!

Been Boat mechanic 35 years that looks like about a 1985ish If I was going to adventure out and I were you I would sure put a water pump impeller in it!! change gear lube or at least make sure it has some in it and I would go ahead and clean the carb it super easy to get off and do, what is it? a 6 a 9.9 or 15hp? And that knob you keep turning on tiller handle isnt the idle! Its a friction knob to hold throttle to relieve your wrist
@Destination_Adventure
@Destination_Adventure 3 года назад
Ohhhhhhhh I thought that was the idle control. Thanks for the info. It’s a 6hp. I’ll definitely pull the carb and clean it but it’s runnin super nice. I also should do the impeller. At idle it’s not pushin a solid stream.

I used to live in Rupert and before I moved out of town, me and a couple friends checked out the Taylor Lake dam area. We found that small shack and it was definitely warm. Just a pile of wood on the side, don't remember the fireplace, so tiny but looked so cozy. We never checked out the powerhouse. As for that pipeline, I believe it goes to Coya Bay which is just after the Kaien Island bridge. Thanks for visting this place, giving me some nostalgia :D

Great video. The wooden pipes brought water to the old Watson Island pulp mill. They made their own power for the mill by burning hogfuel and boiled the water for steam turbines. Cool Stuff

0:31 Dustin. I hope you never grow up.. I love your videos, and the spontaneity of them.. Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional. 2:13 That is a mid to late 80's Evinrude. If you mix the purple Synthetic 2 stroke oil into the gas, you wont get any of the blue smoke.. ;)

Definitely a smaller turbine powerhouse. The 2 vertical shafts you see at 6:35 on the right are for the turbines. The two motors you see on the left side are for weir gates. Can shut the water flow off to the individual turbines. Cool place. And Cool quartz too! Wood stave pipe is really cool too. I know at least one city in Washington state still uses them for its municipal water supply lines.
@Dobermanator
@Dobermanator 3 года назад
This is not 100% accurate. 6:35 There are knife gate vales to the right controlling and or shut down the water. On the left is the highest maintenance items in the whole set-up, raked bar screens, they remove debris from entering the two turbine inlets. The overhead frame is for constant maintenance access of the screens, a vertical turbine water pump sits behind screens likely for cutless bearings on the rake system. The Dam weir gates are at 7:11 controlled electrically using gear boxes (so you need power). The Dam needs to produce power for itself that's for sure, but they should of had obvious electrical lines / terminal that were noticeable if its sending power somewhere else. Appears, and would be normal, two turbines are in basement where he did not (could not) go, an access for what appears to be a belt drive system comes up through the floor at 9:38 (there would be two) in small opening. Any belt drive would have to been removed for safety, and it was, the belt drive pulley in the center of a short shaft (maybe they call this "slave" shaft) sits removed from its baseplate (behind). Keep in mind the normally a second generator would be spare, for when the other was in maintenance not both running at the same time, though likely they could. The Generators and speed control are not shown, likely gone, we did not see the size so it's uncertain the Dam only produces power for itself though it appears to be the case. 9:52 looks like it also had an emergency diesel gen set - gone, fuel tank only remains in a well ventilated empty room. Does the wood pipeline feed another Turbine set? Is it enough flow for a whole mill? The Mill must be relatively close, maybe he had no access to it - locked up tight? A big mystery is what the heck is the tall stack for? Are they burning the debris raking from the screens? Does not make sense to throw that back into the water, and they could use heat from that process I'm sure..

The 2 rusty things that you showed with the electric motor/gearbox on the top are traveling screens. Just imagine a bunch of screen panels that are attached to a large chain on each end. The motor would turn the chains and a backwash spraybar would clean the pannels while it traveled around.

Enjoy it all! I wish I had done more adventures like that when I was younger. I did get 20 years of riding motorcycles, including cross-country trips in the US and loved it - I stopped last year as the destruction of my Ninja 1000 in a failed theft attempt just broke my heart plus I married to someone who can't do bikes. I'm not complaining: I had one hell of a ride! I got curious and looked up the sluice. It's visible on Google Earth and ends up crossing that road a few times, particularly after the turn-off. It looks like it ran into the area of the water tanks on the west side of Watson island, possibly crossing the causeway adjacent. In the photos from 2006 it's visible until a short distance off the highway due west of there.
@kraftzion
@kraftzion Год назад
That grey fuel line does not hold up to ethanol. The inside liner eventually collapses and starves the motor for fuel. The outside of the line will still look brand new. When this happens go down to your autoparts store and buy standard auto fuel line. It is dirt cheap and holds up much better. You can buy the ball seperate if one is needed.

Anytime a gasoline motor has been sitting a longtime it will clog up the Jets hence the reason it started and then died because soon as you started it it sucked all the crap that was floating around in the float bowl and in the tank into the Jets and then the Jets said we can't flow gas So anytime you're Motor is gonna be sitting put in fuel treatment or 2-stroke oil. I hope this helps.
