Remote GPIB control of instruments 

When conducting fiber optical experiments, it is often necessary to adjust the settings of a large number of distinct instruments. Doing so by hand is tedious and error-prone, so automating the tasks is helpful. How can we communicate with devices that are potentially decades old and still utilize them?
