We take a trip back in time to explore the legendary Remote Lounge, a surveillance-themed bar/lounge that opened 2001 in New York City.
We'll explore both the technical details and the sociological aspects of this fascinating project.

Thanks Leo for making this great video, really inspiring. It brought back memories from when I was in Germany in the 1980's: we visited this bar in Hamburg where every table had a large illuminated number and a red phone. There were people (mostly women) sitting at a table just waiting for the right call... Telephones were ringing everywhere. But you guys took the concept to a whole new level.

This blows my mind... I wish I could have been there. Also, just the technical challenges and successes are just amazing to think about. And that it all worked, too?!? Wow. Thanks for posting this.

This is an amazing video because this was such an amazing proyect, I never heard about it as I was living in China at that time, what is surprising is not the idea, it's how it becomes possible with the technology available at that time. If you see this project now. It's peanuts to do it, using Arduino cards, video card interfaces, etc make it so easy to do it.. but Kudos to him, to build the whole interface in an analog system, this is gobsmacking. this has to work and be cheaper and nothing in the market was compatible or available to integrate a system like that. How a group of people went to do it and create all of this. As an engineering project and from an entrepreneur view this something to teach to other students in STEM careers. I guess all the possibilities were aligned, the right people to built it, the creative mind to push the project and a line of investors to pay for this. REally I enjoyed this video and I really like this channel and the way how it teaches from Scratch to build the card and systems, with out running to use existing systems. Keep going mate you are on the right track.

Way cool. I've been fascinated by the concept of telepresence since reading about stuff done at MIT's Media Lab back in the day. I'm a VR developer and continue to be completely baffled by the near total absence of telepresence in VR. Put a stereo camera pair on a fast pan/tilt unit tracking head movement, add a pair of binaural mics and your head is THERE. Bandwidth, range and latency is still somewhat problematic (and/or expensive) for wireless stuff, but it's doable should be getting better soon. There's plenty of coolness to be done now though while we wait for inexpensive stereo 4K transceivers to put in our drones.

I haven’t thought about this place in ages. It was very interesting. I also seem to remember it having a pac man cocktail table. Don’t know why that made an impression.

I noticed that in the photos, the custom circuits that you created looked like they had PCBs that were professionally printed ... is that the case? Or did you use an etching system where you made the boards yourself? And if you had them manufactured, Im interested in what that cost back in 2001 since as you know, anyone can get a PCB manufactured today for what really amounts to almost nothing in the context of the the last 20 years or so.
