The archipelago of Haida Gwaii is remote group of over 1000 islands, most of which can only be accessed by boat. Lucky for me, I travel with a boat that is capable of some pretty awesome ocean adventures. Coming to Haida Gwaii, I knew I would be taking any chance I could to get on the water and get out to some of the spots that few people ever get to see, and this one certainly did not disappoint, but first we had to take the opportunity to visit Rose Spit.
Rose Spit is an absolutely beautiful place to visit, with an absolutely unbelievable view. There are no roads to the tip of the spit, but some people do take their vehicles, but you will see in this video the risk that comes with that decision. I am thankful to have been able to see it without risking the truck, and if youre visiting Haida Gwaii I recommend adding it to your list. On the way to Rose Spit is Toe Hill, which is another awesome stop with some glorious views and rock structures. From both of these locations you can even see the far off mountain ranges of Alaska.
Getting down to Rennell sound is a really fun trip, but it comes with a warning. The final three km of the trip will take you down the fourth Steepest hill in North America, at 25% grade. Lots of folks had warned me about taking my truck down there, but it is actually no problem at all. If it has been raining, I think the hill might not be as easy, but on the right day it can easily be done in a car. The camp spots in Rennell Sound are beautiful, and the adventures out of here are spectacular. Being on the west coast, the ocean can be incredibly dangerous here, so make sure to plan your trips out very accordingly. The fishing is very good (if you're not me), the coastline and views are beautiful, and if you do some research you can find a fair bit of history scattered behind the tree line here.
We set out in search of an abandoned logging camp, but unfortunately it seems that there is not much left to see today. Never the less, it was a great adventure with some great company.

Isn't it sobering how quickly signs of human life can disappear in this climate? I remember when I was a kid going up to camp in Maine, a very similar climate to where you were. The cabin we stayed at was beautiful. Unfortunately the wife of the creator of Burt's Bees bought up all the land and forced people out of their homes and camps, and now 20-30 years later all the homes and camps have been reclaimed by the forest. Most of them she even bulldozed and knocked over so the forest would reclaim them faster. You can't research it online, everything online celebrates her for donating land to the federal government to create a national monument, ignoring all the people she displaced and all the other land she is currently profiting off of and destroying.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw what happened. Just saying this is a worse case scenario and Dustin saw human remains. If that was the case, I'm glad respect was given and it was handled very well. People may see that different but, what if it was human remains. Not plastering it all over the internet is respect for the deceased and any loved ones.

@dosomethingdoanything Год назад
Of course it's not a good idea to show human remains. But to not even talk about it is a missed opportunity to discuss the history of what might of happened in the area or a reach out to a suicide hotline. It is not disrespectful nor lacking of integrity to have a conversation and by not talking about it your suggestion could very easily make things worse in the long run.
@mightymouseofnyc
@mightymouseofnyc Год назад
@@dosomethingdoanything Making assumptions about the remains of someone and the cause of their death is disrespectful to the deceased and those who may love/wonder about the deceased. We know nothing of what had occurred and Dustin did mention an investigation needs to occur which is fair to all parties who may be close to this situation. It would make it worse if Dustin displayed on the internet for the world to see what MIGHT have happened to this person(s); making assumptions that are or are not relevant. A suicide hotline isn't going to tell anyone anything about the calls they received and if they do, it will only be with law enforcement or with a mental health provider to save someone's life.

Haida Gwaii. I was there in 76. That is a magical place. Haida culture is very much alive there. Traditional Haida war canoes are made there. They where yearly raced in Vancouver Harbours years ago. Beautifully decorated. Trees are picked close to the oceans ridge of the island. Tribes people would search for the tree and preform a ceremony before taking it down. Once on the ground the tree is trimmed to length. Then would be carried inland to a covered hut specially designed for carving. As one of the locals explained. Two totem poles where being carved on the beaches at my time of visit. With several skilled craftsman preparing the carvings and paintings nearing completion. As you adventure into the forests with 800 year old Cedar trees your surrounded by thick floor carpet moss. Quite a magical place to be on earth. Toe Hill is amazing place. At low tide there's plenty of claims to dig for. I'm really glad l had the opportunity to see this area again. Thank you Dustin for sharing. This made my day. Cheers.

Flew over Rose Spit on Air Canada on the way to Anchorage to board Sapphire Princess and it is truly a sight to see. On the return on the ship we bumped into a hurricane and used the Haida Island as a shield against the full force of the storm. All night we were pounding into a gale force 11 and could hear the cabin suites moving around. As you may know Sapphire is a 120,0000 ton ship and it was still scary. My buddy was doing some species study with Pacific Bio Stn. and was dragging on the east side of the spit and accidentally bumped into 10,000 lbs of dungies ! Another time I was commercial fishing trolling off Tow hill and caught a sunken or missing commercial crab trap on the deep line. and inside the trap was a Wolf eel. Kept him for a half a day and called him Wolfy, Never got on land there and always wanted to go back. Thank you for taking me there, finally. Trolled Rennall Sound June 1st 1981 for a salmon opening and concur it is truly magical. Never saw so many Bald eagles in a day. There is hardly any continental shelf there, so can get really nasty when the weather comes up. Beach -combed a spectacular sandy beach near Frederick Island and found two glass fishing balls amongst a ton of garbage. Lots of plastic fishing balls and empty vodka bottles. Little further north, another deckie went scuba diving and got a load of rock scallops for dinner and then went 100 yards into the bush and shot one of those small deer. It was surf and turf for dinner that night and will never forget it. Skidigate channel, Langara Island, Skincuttle inlet, Tasu inlet and Cape St. James all burned into my memory. You are so lucky to be there because like someone else said in the comments, not many people get to go there. The food abundance is something to behold and very tasty as well. Cheers.

Nice job D. Gave me chills. Stirred up some emotions. Really neat to see places I have been before on your videos. It looked like Mick was driving your atv at 1:23. Nice to see he is alive and well. Always go with your gut instinct. Good thing you didn't take the truck out. My buddy and I did the ""Bataan Death March" in 2009. We walked from the parking lot, to the end of the spit. Tons of fun in the sand. Burnt out on the way back, and low on water, partway we were able to hitch a ride in the back of a pick-up with a couple from Alberta. Thanks 'Berta, you got some good folks from 'round there. I've been on that beach you were standing on. The rock formations are super cool. I'm surprised that you did not access the viewing platform on Toe Hill. It is a very nice trail, not that long. You should check it out if you ever go back. The bush there reminds me of Middle Earth. I was waiting for some Elves and Orks to run into the frame. Always remember to give those old trees a hug. They can feel it. You should look into the legend of "The Golden Spruce". It's a tragic twisted tale. The forest is very special there. Glad you only leave footprints. Beautiful footage. Got me in the "feels". Safe travels, keep up the good work... Cheers :)

Hello Dustin! Where you ever allowed to reveal what you found on the island? I have my guess but am curious. Great stuff we all really appreciate you and your adventures

I wonder why people all over the world tell the fairy tale about basalt columns that were created by volcanoes. The basalt columns are the legacy of sawn-off trees, i.e. tree stumps that are millions of years old and have fossilized.

That thick moss just looks unreal to me. It looks like a fairy tale place or something!!! That cliff off the coast that you came up on was crazy beautiful too. Some great video all around bud. Sorry about the discovery you had to see and for anyone else it affects!!

Rennel Sound is my favorite rec site in BC. Also the beach drive is amazing. Just don't idle in place when you park. That's how people sink😂

I'm curious about the Pacific and Atlantic oceans "meeting" at the Haida Gwaii peninsula. I don't see how that is possible at that location. I'd welcome an explanation...

That's the first time I wanted to end a video of yours early. WTF were you thinking showing us a mystery and then telling us NOTHING? Would have been 100% better to say nothing.

Despite your denial of the label "tourist" (in previous video from Haida Gwaii), you are simply a tourist doing tourist things. What is the counterpoint? Participating in community. Serving others. Doing things that make others grateful for your participation.

Where did you get your information about the Pacific and Atlantic oceans converging at the end of Rose Spit? Haida Gwaii is completely surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean is on the other side of the country.

Shaylanna Lewis, Brent Hendron and a few others for such an isolated place. If the discovery wasn't ancient remains I hope it brings closure for a family.

Love you Dustin, but fishing is not your strong point. To go from a lovely creek, to fishing in open water not even at substantial depth. Or with bait. Just dragging a hook around lol. Get some decent flies for the creeks and sink some spam. I love skits, but would love to see some fish on the Moho cooking show eventually 😊😊

Great video! I hate to say it, but that looks like just a cedar that split when the loggers felled it from the stump you indicate. I have seen many dugouts and ridden in one with it's builder. He also showed me the remains of the first one he tried to make (in the '70s). It split because he carved it out with a chainsaw in a couple of days, and the sudden change in stress was too much. Some elders taught him to wait, and then carve slowly. That canoe had the same amount of vegetation on it, I'd say. It's just across the strait on Dolphin Island. I can't tell how far from the chuck you are, but it's pretty rare to carve a canoe far from the water, unless there is an easy slope to slide it on down. It looks pretty flat there. Lovely video, and you had good weather, too! :^)

The beauty of the environment is beyond words. Once again, watching the video with google maps open too see where in this great country you are. Keep them coming!

those are second growth sitka spruce trees, yes they're beautiful, obviously the place has been logged, but the 2nd growth is pretty substantial considering, old growth sitka spruce are huge, much bigger than that, & highly endangered due to centuries of recent old growth rampant non-caring logging
