Remote Viewer is the weekly series where we go to shows, shoot a song and share them with all of you. It’s pretty simple, and I hope you like it.
Welcome to the second season of Remote Viewer. We made it through 26 almost weekly features last year and now we are back again for 2024. I had considered bringing it back, but then one show really made it happen. Actually one song. More on that in a moment.
So the show for Steve was a two day benefit show for Steve Poponi who passed away suddenly in Oct 2023. Steve was such a dear friend. We played shows together as teenagers. The next decade we booked shows together. And then eventually played in a band together. There was one Steve, but Steve had a million me's. Everybody looked up to him. Whether it was his band Up Up Down Down (or older band Dixon Ward), or his studio Gradwell House, or any of the many other projects he was involved with.
All of those friends (with massive help from Tom Ryan) put together an amazing two night benefit show for Steve's daughters. My family went to night one with Alex G, Hop Along, and Saintseneca. And I made it out to night two with A Great Big Pile of Leaves, Hop Along, and Up Up Down Down featuring a run of guns vocalists.
I shot a lot of songs that night, in between all of the emotions. But one really hit me in the gut. Boise is their amazing song about a dreadful tour, and it hit hard when they played their last show (at the venue that me and Steve ran shows at) in 2008. It hit even harder here. Everyone was on stage singing along. Everyone in the crowd was too. What a moment to end a special night... that Steve would have hated.
