Farmers insurance has now become the latest company to completely reverse their remote work policy and will now require over 21,000 employees to come back to the office 3 days per week. Remote workers for this, and many other companies were promised remote work, and and are now furious over the back to office mandates.

True. I work for the Federal Government, who wrote my permanent telework status in to a contract. 3 years later, they simply decided not to honor the contract and are requiring people to return to the office. I worked for AETNA Health Care until 2015 that experimted with remote work long before the pandemic. Interesting. How long did they 'test it out'? I'm thinking 1. it works in the short term but in the long term it negatively affects your mental health and thereby performance, 2. it works better in some companies than others, 3. it works better for some people than others.
@incredibleshrinkingfungus1731
Works the opposite direction too. People goofing off and out and about when they're supposed to be at home "working"- especially at the gym/fitness. My former employer saw plenty of that and put in a hidden metric of response time to inquiries, demands, communications, etc. when employees are supposed to be "free" and not in scheduled meetings. Those people now have to come into the office. It was so funny. They all said they didn't get the message or were busy or being pulled in too many directions. The VP had a simple response back to them all as a group and individually -- prove it to your supervisor.

I've worked at companies that have experimented with remote work on and off for the last 20 years. It basically breaks down to personality type. Some people get lots of work done when they're not constantly being bugged with phone calls and meetings about meetings. Other people can't get anything done, can't manage their time effectively, and need the structure. Some people constantly have excuses why they don't get anything done and don't answer the phone because they're not really working. At my current job, we experiment with it on an individual basis, but they can still be called back to the office if their productivity drops. The trick to being able to work from home is that you are just as responsive as when you are at work. Don't ever tell someone to call you back because you're at the gym. That puts you at the top of the layoff list.
@survivingthetimes
@survivingthetimes Год назад
Exactly! Leaving people unsupervised definitely must be done on a case by case basis. That is an important variable which I see missing from the conversation. Anyone with a lick of sense knows that there are people, plenty of people, who aren't self-starters and will never be optimally productive if they're left on their own. Hell, anyone who has multiple kids knows that. If left to their own devices, one kid might be responsible, and the other will find a way to burn the house down.

People wanting to work remotely isn't about laziness, its just objectively better than working on-site because Remote work saves people precious time and money. Obviously not every job can be done remotely but it is obvious why many workers prefer to work at least partially remote. Lets face it, most of the return to office mandates are coming from companies that want to increase attrition, they massively over-hired coming out of the pandemic and now need to trim their headcount. If people leave voluntarily they don't have to give them severance packages. Many also have big expensive office leases and buildings on their balance sheet. And don't give me that nonsense that companies are now discovering that if you can do your job remote, then it can be outsourced. Outsourcing is not some new phenomenon, its been happening for decades. Many companies outsourced in the 90's and 00's only to find out their business took a massive productivity hit so they moved back to hiring domestic employees. If a company wants to cut costs and wants to outsource, they will outsource regardless if you come to the office. The perks are clear, just to name a few: - Don't have to spend hundreds or thousands of hours per year sitting in their car or public transit - Thousands of dollars on gas and vehicle depreciation and parking - You can bring and pick up your kids up from school - Don't have to pretend to be busy at the office once all your work is done - Don't have to pretend to enjoy socializing with your coworkers when you just want to get your work done - Can save money and eat healthier home cooked meals more easily - Better for the environment - Get more sleep

My wife has worked remotely for about 15 years now. The business actually shut down her office in our city. I was hybrid before the pandemic, 3 in and 2 remote. Since then my role has changed and my direct supervisor is in a city 3-4 hours away, and his boss is literally on the opposite side of the country. I don't have an office anymore and my boss says there's absolutely no reason for me to bother going in to the office. My company is actually pushing for a lot of people in roles that don't need to be in the office to work remotely and is decreasing the office footprint. I realize this could change which is why we are staying put for now (I mean, aside from insane real estate prices).

If you have the time I'd highly recommend selecting the "avoid highways" option on your GPS, highways are nice when you have places to be but as time has gone on I've done an increasing percentage of my driving on backroads. If I have nowhere to be may as well take the scenic route. Also while installing a full kitchen in your vehicle like I did may be impractical, I would consider getting a 12v refrigerator. It's nice to be able to take fresh food on the road with you since there are miles with nothing but fast food and gas station snacks. That was probably stated in the communication that was sent out about the new WFH or hybrid schedule. 20 years working both on site and remote, much of the time as the tech lead for offshore teams. Managing people who are remote takes a different skillset than on site management. Those who say remote work is less productive or harder are simply lying. Also, both remote and on site jobs are constantly being considered for offshore, no one is safe from that just because they commute to the office. Unfortunately labor shortages are common in every highly skilled category. There has been much less offshoring in the past few years, due to quality issues. American talent is still highly productive even at their huge price point. Many of my friends who happen to be looking for work are choosing to just apply for remote jobs, and getting them. Remote is not dead. Most people just want more flexibility. After the recession turns the corner, I believe that many firms will be climbing over each other to offer remote work.
@nonawolf7495
@nonawolf7495 Год назад
Agreed. If you have clearly defined goals and performance metrics, it's easy to see who is productive. The problem with many managers is that they don't understand what what we do (in the case of technical positions) or they don't have well written performance objectives. In lieu of an intelligent performance metric, the weak manager decides that "visual contact" is the way to judge productivity.

My company has downsized our buildings and gotten rid of about 2/3 of desks which equals 1000s of desk and dozens of buildngs -floors and floors of space. I support all these WFH people, and lets just say i am sick and F-ing tired of working around THEIR schedule , with their kids, or their errands, or what ever they do at home besides WORK which isnt much work. I KNOW cause I see it on zoom and hear it in the background on calls. Thats IF i can even get ahold of them during work hours. On top of this, i get $hit on over and over and over, having to take on roles that were really not mine and do other IT depts jobs that require someone in the building only because someone doesnt want to get the the car and drive 10 miles to a building and go do it. And when they do come to the office for like a meeting or convention it like a work party for them I have to support the IT equipment, with lots of food and noise. When I voice my concern I am told dont worry about it, its now my job cause were are in building support. Its absolutly insane. I have shipped at least 10000 laptops on top of other equipment in and out of my buildings to support this madness. I am looking for a WFH job or hybrid job that fits my role. That’s where Michael Savage would go for dinner quite often, an Italian Place there. Watch out for Michael (Savage), Michael ! Smart guy. Great broadcaster with the historical old school flavor which we love. Thanks for vid., we like Fort Meyers, that’s where the hurricane came through though!!!!

Not true about the Westfield mall. They have several locations that they are transferring over. I'm near a location where there is plenty of foot traffic and very low crime yet they notified the public last year that they will be closing. The primary reason was the high drive up in online shopping over the pandemic. Online shopping shuttered many businesses across the country regardless of foot traffic.

These people who are complaining about they moved clear across the country during pandemic due to work from home and now being required to work part time in the office.. it’s your own fault a lot of companies said this may not be a permanent thing. Always a risk of return to the office less your contract states 100% work from home.
@Stephen_567

People want to work from home because they don't like to be supervised which gives them opportunity to work less than they should. Not many people have discipline and integrity to work all day without supervision.

Then they would be fired. I know of a company that let a good amount of people go in 2020 due to low productivity from home. If you’re doing your job from home there’s no reason to be in the office, except for time wasting stuff like meaningless meetings and office gossip sessions.

That happens in an environment were there are no well defined performance goals or written objectives. If you don't have a clearly defined performance target, then it is impossible to determine if your employees are productive. For my position as an eLearning developer, the performance requirement was to turn around a project in 7 weeks. It's easy to measure no matter where I am... no one needs to see my face to know If I have delivered on time.

We went total WFH all the way up the chain. Top management totally botched it. The lack of solid management decisions to manage their staff and keep production up has come to roost. Workers are still remote but a new CEO mandated all senior level management full time back in office. The same people who we never saw on zoom or in any meetings. And always had do not disturb on their teams chats. Their golf tans looked good but decisions were none existence and neither was actual support. Now all of a sudden those same hi paid upper level managers are so available. It’s only a matter of time that remote work turns into office presents for all of us.

@@CarlaQuattlebaum Many are likely tech workers who thought they had such high job security that worst case, they would find another job immediately. Could not blame them, tech companies were hiring workers to do nothing, just to keep them away from the competition! A serious case of "status quo bias." On your cross country trip if you are in the College Station, TX area, would be glad to give you a place to stay for a few nights. We are a good example of a small town - large college town.

It depends on the role. I commute in an hour one way, with my laptop, to hook up to an internet connection. I develop software on that laptop, and join teams meeting with people across the country (4 major hubs, satellites in every state) and weekly with people in 3 different continents. I'm not lazy, I tend to work more hours when I wfh. I'm just frustrated I have to commute to connect to an internet connection. I have an internet connection at home...why waste fuel and time?

Working from home even 2 days a week is nice... but the friction costs of selling, buying, and moving, TWICE are going to be huge. Even people with written telework agreements (like me) are being called back to the place they left. Suspense date for my team is September... wonder if we're going to see more inventory come back to the market as a result of all this forced moving?
