When voyaging the galaxy on a performance cruising catamaran, you pick up the odd ALIEN lifeform. Finally its a good time to clean out the diesel bug from a few years ago, which called our fuel tank home. What's living in YOUR fuel tank?
We continue on the jobs list which include anchor chain marking, dinghy painting and more.

ABOUT US:
Jupiter² was built in the Philippines by an Australian designer for Jamie. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time.
Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing".

Ohoy there :)Like your videos..i am an old enginerepairman ( merachant marine) and if you put a valve on the bottom plug ( diesel Tk) and now an the you could with the dingy and a bucket just drain little water out...humidity will always come in the airvent. Watch onboard do this every morning as a rutine in engine :) there are also nice german( boll )filter with self shuting function ( it uses air to clean themself)(and with a dirt indicator :) bst from sailorbear sweden.

@SailingLifeonJupiter 2 года назад
Hey Bjorn…good idea with the drain valve… we use a pump to suck out the sump from time to time when it needs it.

Everry main engine should have a double RACCOR type fuel filter, safety. [You can switch while running seamleasly, the clean the failing filter having it ready if you need it again] I my experince(crossing pacific 90' schooner with fowled tanks) it worked perfectectly(without doing the tank scrub[not as accessible as yours]) keeep up you spirits!!!!
@SailingLifeonJupiter
@SailingLifeonJupiter 2 года назад
It's a good idea Lincoln... But sinc3 we have 2 engines running on separate tanks I haven't bothered doubling the fuel filters. Cheers
@shaynetobin5894
@shaynetobin5894 2 года назад
We use an outboard motor fuel line pump before the filter, just squeeze the bulb until the return into the tank is constant. No bleeding and fuel spilt after changing filters, Citroën have done this for years on their diesel cars. Sailing vessel Yes, Mumby 47.

Algae is grown at the surface where water and diesel fuel meet....... The corrosion in your tanks is from water. If you properly clean your fuel You won't have problem I under stand the problems with high humidity but if You polish the fuel in your tanks You could medicate the problem...........
@SailingLifeonJupiter
@SailingLifeonJupiter 2 года назад
Tks Ken.. Hasn't been a problem since using the fuel additive.

Diesel bug is a mixture of different microbes, bacteria and fungus that can live and thrive in the interface between water and diesel in your fuel tank. Like most bacteria it will reproduce quickly to potentially become a serious problem in a short time. It particularly likes warm weather but can strike anywhere. Always add a supplement before filling or topping off your tanks. Here in Australia the product I use treats up to about 1000L, but it can't be overdosed.

When I was building liquid cooled gaming PCs we tried all the biocides - would work for a year, but that was it. What worked was a coil of silver, killed off everything. You would have to ensure that the silver will not react badly with the aluminium - a very quick google search suggests that silver sulphate is converted to aluminium sulphate but you can only lose as much as you have silver in the system, and it's surprising how little silver you need in the system to protect everything. It's worth asking a chemist. Might be cheaper in the long run than purchasing exotic chemicals.
@SailingLifeonJupiter
@SailingLifeonJupiter 2 года назад
Ah PI that is interesting... Galvanically silver is around 0.6v different from aluminium, but the their are already all sorts of metals within the engine fuel system plumbing... So it potentially a good idea. Mostly tho the problem with cruising boats is that the fuel is sitting stagnant (no circulation) in the tank for months at a time...so maybe the biocide is better for that. Anyhow, nice idea... Cheers

Soldring wires that can move/vibrate is not the best thing. The solder gets in the wire (capilair effect) and together with the heat hardens the wire. The result is often it breaks next to the solderjoint. That is in theory, I never tested it.

Good to know.. Cheers

Next time you are shopping for a Biocide and if your willing to try something different try Biobor. Used heavily in the Aviation and Marine industry. I used it in our trawler and now use it in our motorhome. Never had an issue. Found at most Marine stores and if you plan ahead Amazon has it. It is super concentrated a little bit goes along way. Always enjoy your videos. Sail on.

Good to see the fuel system and see how the bugs in there have started to grow. How has the system handled the fuel qualify in your travels? I see you used that funnel with the filter, but has your fuel filter and water separators done the job?
@SailingLifeonJupiter
@SailingLifeonJupiter 2 года назад
Yeah Trev... We've had fuel blockages at the 1st stage (glass bowl) filter, but none beyond that.

Good video guys. Buy your star tron stabilizer at Walmart Jamie, it's way cheaper. I just did a fuel swap in my boat yesterday and I dumped a lot in there. $5.50 a gallon of gas, OUCH THAT HURTS. 😫

Why doesn't the boat have consistent welding between it's joints ?

In the fuel tanks?... I assume to minimise the heat load and warping... But not sure where you're talking about.

Who ever did the welding on that boat they should have his license revoked because it looks like chicken shit as we say we welders There was a lot to hit and miss in the welding not binding pity because it is a nice boat even there next to the winch i saw it was only point stitches there sould have been 100mm weld and 50mm miss and continued to the end of job
@SailingLifeonJupiter
@SailingLifeonJupiter 2 года назад
Where were you when it was being built??? I could have used your advice... Do you weld aluminum? As I understand it is far more challenging due to the heat soak and warping. I've had other comments from engineers saying how good the welding is, tho talking about the hulls, not windlass base. Ah well not much I can do about it now.

@@SailingLifeonJupiter i am a certified welder in saying that i well all materials and use all methods of welling be it stick or wire or tig welding i am located in Norway aluminum it's is all about preparing both sides of plate be welded if not then you get those hir and miss situations but can be repaired if a person in this case lifts up a machine with a long packade and go over the welds with Tig then you will have a solid boat 🚢 ps they should use aluminum mg5 as it is salt water resistant other wise it will corroded and swiping finger over weld will leave a white powder on you finger if you need help pm or dm me cheers
