Remove, Clean, and Replace Dewalt Brushless 20V String Trimmer Quick Spool Head

In this video I take the time to show you how to remove, clean, and/or replace a 20V brushless Dewalt string trimmer head. I noticed as I was trying to scour the internet for how to do this, every video and piece of content I could find was showing a different type of head. So, I took it upon myself to go and make a how to video for the quick spool head shown here.

Thank you so much! Mine has been sitting in the garage for several years now because I couldn’t figure it out - I got a gas trimmer after getting frustrated at how the manual was zero help (and at the time, you hadn’t made this video… nor had anyone else). Two or three minutes of fiddling and now it is back to work. Which is a good thing, because the gas mower was KO’d yesterday. Thanks again!

For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. ru-vid.comUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.

Great video, wasn't sure what rotation to wind new string. A tip for extended the string while in use is to pull and release the trigger. Then while the head is still spinning, but not being driven by the motor, bump it. Gives you more control over the feed and less wear on the unit.

Thanks for this. I never thought about grass blocking the bump action. I talked to another owner who found a plastic half sphere, like a door knob bumper, and glued it to the bottom bump unit. Now he can just slide the weed whacker across the ground, cutting at grass height, without gouging his lawn or tossing rocks and dust.

So glad I found your video. I actually had an issue that I have yet to read about anyone else experiencing that involves the plastic piece you’re inserting at 2:32 (with the bolt set in it) and the housing it sits in. That piece was seized and would not turn, so despite cleaning out all of the grass, my string still wouldn’t advance. The bolt slid easily out of that plastic piece, but the plastic part was actually stuck in the housing you drop it into. I needed to whack it hard with a rubber mallet to remove it. Once I did that and reinserted it, the whole mechanism functioned again. Very odd since I don’t understand what caused it to stick. Anyway, thanks so much for the great video!

Enjoyed this video. I was having trouble getting the string to advance. Did not have any debris that needed to be cleaned out but did observe that the spool did not slide up and down and interact with the spring. Lubricated the metal center with silicon lubricant and made sure that the spool moved freely up and down the metal center piece and would reset readily with the spring. This solved my problem and the trimmer head works like new.

Fantastic. Yes, I have the DeWalt DCM 561 P1S, 18v cordless strimmer, and the bump to get a bit more line out wasn't working. I found the slot and put in a screwdriver, and turned the bump head clockwise to remove it. Dismantled it and found tough bits of grass or straw lodged between every adjacent plastic component. No wonder the spool wouldn't slide in and out to enable more line to be released. Great job. Chris, in Twelveheads,Cornwall.

Another tip. For adding line, unless there is line left in it, there is no need to take off the top. The nail is not needed either. Just line up the marks on the top and bottom to expose the hole. Run string through. Then hold the top while turning the bottom counterclockwise. That way the string stays put and doesn't wrap all around it.

As stated in an earlier comment, you don't have to remove the spool cap to reload line and if you hold the spool cap stationary and twist (wind) with the spool grip cover instead of vice versa, the line will wind smoother and you should be able to load more line without it getting in a bind.
